Understeer issues with 195 width tyres
matth76 replied to matth76's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering

I've currently got 195/50/15 tyres on my front wheels. They are new tyres. I went to the 195 width instead of 205 because the Goodyear F1's only came in that size. I have the original old 205 width tyres at the back. I have noticed I get a fair bit of understeer going round a roundabout at normal speeds... to the extent I have to go fairly slowly. I have on a couple of occasions had the backend step out on me if I go a bit faster when its a bit damp. A bog standard astra could go round quicker than I could tonight round a roundabout. I didn't get this problem on my old tyres which were 205 w

I had no problem accelerating past one (the later one with two exhausts) when he was definitely pushing his. I even had a passenger. I was still in third when I pulled by. My vr does have around 200+bhp though.

A guy at work has an S3. If you do get one make sure you change the cambelt, whether it needs doing or not. His went at 50k miles when it normally needs doing at 72k miles! Whole engine needed replacing. Audi paid for 50% but was a real hassle getting anything out of them. Audi main dealers are ar**holes basically...he had to speak to audi head office to get any discount. Personally I think they should have paid for the lot...anyway. As you say it isn't that fast due to its heavy weight. It's about the same as my vr. A chipped one would be a different story. I like it. It's very subtle in l

Yes mate. I have had mine done there a few times. Very good place. Stealth are probably the best in the UK when it comes to the ecu on the mark 3 vr6. Best on value and on experience.

Yeah it only takes power away (approx 5 bhp!) when turned on. However it does weight approx 20-25kgs so adds a fair bit of weight to the car.

Thanks guys. Any good or bad things about the Dunlop SP9000? Is this very good in the wet and dry? Russ, what type of BF Goodrich's did you have on your old clio, were they the G-Force Profiler as in this link: http://www.bfgoodrich.co.uk/bfguk/front/affich.jsp?codeRubrique=4&codePage=BFG_PAG_PRODUCT1〈=EN

Hi Going to need to replace a couple of tyres soon and thinking about a change in tyre. I have done a search and found a few reviews about the Toyo Proxes TR-1 but the reviews seem to focus mainly on the older T1-S, which are mainly mediocre reviews. However has anyone tried the later T1-R's and can let me know how they compare to the likes of Goodyear F1's etc? Do they last longer.. is the grip very good etc? I used to have the F1's but they only lasted 5 mins and the grip was great at the start but very poor in damp conditions when they were two thirds worn. Plus the F1's are no longer ma

Could be that there is some water trapped some where ...does it get slightly better when the car has warmed up

Flatspot on my VR-HELP-SORTED!!!!!!!!!!
matth76 replied to MJ Vr6's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Do you have cams? Some cams give a slight flat spot in low revs in first gear - mine does below 2000 revs but that is normal and there is more power higher up. If you definitely don't have cams then I would get it on vag com or down The Phirm or Stealth if you are near to either. Have you had any work done on the car, such as chains done recently or anything to do with the top of the engine? When you take off slowly your revs have risen to the power band so the flat spot is less noticable whereas moving off quickly the difference will be more noticable because you are accelerating harder. -
water loss since the thermostwat was changed
matth76 replied to jpc's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
If there are definitely no leaks then it could be slight damage to your head gasket caused by the overheating - which is bad news. I had a stuck thermostat a few months back (seems to be a fault with the vr) and Stealth initially said if you get any subsequent mysterious water loss with no obvious leaks then it is likely to be the head gasket. Luckily I didn't get any water loss and car is fine. I think there is something called a leak down test that a good garage can do for you and also a compression test, all to make sure your head gasket is in good order. If your head gasket is slightly d -
Yes I get this database connection error a lot too.

A mate at work has an S3 (the later 220bhp version) and it is pretty much even with my VR, which is only lightly modified. The S3 is good off the mark with its 4wd but due to it's much heavier weight (1375kgs compared to the VR's 1170kgs) it is pretty much even in the mid range. Therefore with the lower powered a3 1.8t a standard vr should beat it. I may be wrong but I think the a3 1.8t was two wheel drive.

Hi Devery Stealth are the people to speak to for a rolling road session. They will also check over your car to ensure your oil pressure is right etc. If you have an obd1 and a chip I would assume you have mid 180's bhp. You'd get more if you had a modified throttle body (again Stealth can advise on this). Their rolling road session is £50+vat.

Twin in my opinion too. But totally up to you mate, either looks good. I only went for a twin exit (mines a Milltek) to keep it close to the standard twin style.
-
Definitely take it back to the place that did it - they should definitely fix your problems free of charge or failing that put it back to how it was and give you a refund. When they did the remap did they rolling road it at same time to check everything was running ok, or take it for a run down an open road while connected to a laptop with some diagnostic software? These checks verify that all the ignition timing and fuelling etc is correct and more importantly you don't have any pinking. If they didn't they should have. Let us know how you get on mate.

The top end is naturally tappety mate. The tappets are also called followers or lifters. You don't need to replace them.

Read about this incident a few months back. Big waste of a car! Amazingly the driver walked away! Pity the driver didn't know how to drive it.

Nice one mate. I use The Phirm too. Top guys and extremely good at what they do and very good prices. They do all the cars for Performance VW mag..

AMD or Superchip? Also which oil is best for my 4motion?
matth76 replied to matski's topic in Syncro, R32 and 4motion
Not heard brilliant things about AMD. As said above a remap would be far better and get more power from your car. Stealth's full custom remap costs roughtly the same as a chip but far far better with less likely problems too that you encounter with "off the shelf" chips. Plus Stealth are the best in the business when it comes to the vr6 engine. Your 4motion will only have slightly better 0-60 than the cooper S (maybe half a sec or so), mainly because yours weighs a bit more, but the 4motion will easily win on mid range acceleration and 0-100mph and is far classier. Another mod to try is the fl -
Get it MOT'd asap. They (I am only assuming mind you) shouldn't even know you were in change over period of getting MOT and travelling TO the garage at the time. There is a period of 7 days I believe by law if your car fails mot to get the failed areas fixed - but as above I think this is a grey area. But I am only assuming in all this. Let us know how you get on mate.
