MkIV steel head gasket - good or bad mod on a mkIII vr golf?
matth76 posted a topic in Engine Tuning
I have heard that a thinner steel headgasket can be fitted from the mk 4 golf gti. This obviously raises compression as the gasket is thinner. Is this a bad or good thing? Does it give my car more lower down torque or is that a load of cr**? If it does improve low down torque, is it really noticable, how much are we talking? With the gasket being steel does it make it more reliable? Or is it a bad thing with a car that has 268 cams? My car is only lightly modified with exhaust and air filter and 268 cams, remap, no plans to go the forced induction route, keeping everything n/a. Thanks for an -
Affordable tweaks while the head's off?

Whose charging you £1k to replace your head gasket?!! Cost should be around £500-600 tops. -
You're in the right direction with spark plugs and leads. I had exactly the same problem a year ago (juddering and hesitation, especially when you floor it) - and also had a strange popping noise occasionally ... turned out to be loose spark plugs (when my car was warmed up after 20 mins the problem disappeared, as the metal expanded) - my car had just had a FULL service at Caffyns VW main dealer!! Every single one of my spark plugs was not fully tightened up. Never taking my car back to them - total waste of £250. Anyway try the spark plugs and see how you get on mate.

Vr6newcomer didn't have any noise I believe so can't be chain or tensioner related. I would agree with Steve and say its something related to the spark plugs or fuelling. Did your car get started eventually or did you get it towed by the aa? I might be wrong but I think the oil light will come on when you stall or the engine dies, so not necessarily oil related as such. Was the rolling road at Stealth? Was your power curve smooth and what power/torque did you make?

The OBD2 does have more power as standard than the OBD1... Stealth say at all the cars they rolling road the OBD2 has (as you correctly said) on average approx 185bhp standard (about 10bhp more). 174 was the quoted figure for the first of the line. You would have been far better of having the Stealth remap (same cost as a superchip) which will get the most out of your specific mods to suit your car. With your throttle body mod does it include an enlarged butterfly? I have heard this is the best mod to do on an OBD1 tb (which the corrado one is). Unfortunately the OBD2 also has a slighty mo

What's the twin vanos thing? How much you willing to spend? I don't know much about what to look out for but I'm sure there's some M3 forums somewhere. Very good engine. Most powerful normally aspirated 6 cylinder engine I think too. I would check that it has a full service history vital, by a good garage with no service gaps otherwise walk away. Check with the garage that did the servicing (tell them you are about to buy the car and lie and say you about to continue using them to service the car) and ask what work is likely to need doing in the near future - do this before you make an offe

I've signed it. When they sent the confirmation email I found I had to copy and paste the link into the address bar as just clicking it didn't work for me. Until they sort out public transport (to make it cheaper and far far more efficient) I will still be using my car.

All R32's and golf 4 motions have Haldex fitted as standard. As said above it is simply the name of the 4 wheel drive system. I'm not sure but Audi may use the same 4wd system too. Unfortunately its not permanent 4wd like on a subaru.

I've got a Milltek. Not overly loud at all but sounds good when you floor it but you can quite easily cruise at 80 or 90 and it's not much louder than stock - unless of course you floor the pedal over 3k revs but it sounds more like an aston martin than a chav saxo and you can still clearly hear the v6 with it. Very good quality and fitted perfectly.

It could be that you have a leak in your sun roof seal or windows somewhere. You may of course have a leak in your hosing that you recently replaced allowing more external cold air in. If its cold outside (which has been recently) the windscreen will steam up a lot more and if you have a slight leak the cold air coming inside will make your windscreen steam up more. Opening windows won't work for this same reason - it'll probably slow down the clearing process.

I've got the twin exit Milltek cat back. Very nice. You wont go wrong with this exhaust. Very good quality and fitted perfectly. Stealth fitted mine and they really liked it. It's only slightly louder than standard and doesn't drone at all when driving on the motorway. It only howls if you really floor it above 3500 revs onwards! But its a proper aston martin style howl not boomy or chav like. Go for it mate.

Mine's a late 97 P reg and doesn't have one. Surprised more VR's don't have them. Sounds about right that the very last of the line 97 R-regs could have it as an option.

S*d that. Like I said a "good" garage will do it for free. It takes less than 5 mins to read and clear any codes. It doesn't take a whole hour!! ..(assuming its £40 an hour labour) Daylight robbery. Take it to The Phirm or Stealth mate. I'm sure someone on here will confirm if the parts above will be ok.
-
Any good garage will scan/read your codes and clear them for you for free. Yes your car is an OBD1. Not sure on what you will need exactly though mate if you want to do it yourself. It looks as though the scanner has the cable on it - the other end should attach to the point near your fag lighter so therefore I would assume you don't need the extra cable. I might be wrong. I assume the cable in the second link would be if you were using vag com on a laptop.

Stealth have said charged cars do not gain anything having the 6 branch. A more free flowing exhaust like a Milltek will give you some more power though with your charger, so expect to see some gain after fitting the Milltek.

B6MFD which garage did you use?
-
I had a bad experience with them (I wont go into details). Many people on the Corrado forum (www.corrado-forum.net) have a few things to say about them too. Stealth (near Birmingham) or The Phirm (near Farnham, Surrey) are the best in the UK mate. Take your car to them. Everyone on here will recommend both of these companies.

I agree with you Macs. So many people seem to spend £5k on very bog standard cars who think they have more power than they do. The mk4 R32 is apparently quite tunable, more so than the mk3 which I didn't know. Owners on the vwvortex forum have managed to get 230bhp at the wheels with just a cat back exhaust, cold air intake, and remap. Not sure what that equates to at the fly but must be at least 260-265bhp. Nice.

I had one behind me one day and we both accelerated from a roundabout and he kept up with me for a bit but I started pulling away from him after about 10 secs. He was definitely trying as he wanted to race at the next roundabout. However having said all that I wouldn't say there's much between an OBD2 vr and ctr. Prefer the VR as its far more exclusive and sounds better. ctr's are so common these days. For the same price as a ctr I would far prefer the mk4 R32. Now that is an exclusive car.

Sounds like your car is overfuelling a lot if it is popping a lot. Best get the cam sensor replaced as that will not be a good thing and can cause you to loose up to 30bhp. Was your car ok before going to the body shop??

Cool, thanks for that Spanky... wasn't too worried about it Steve just curious as to what the burning smell might have been. Phirm did a great job Sat. Thoroughly cleaned my throttle body out and calibrated many other sensors, including lamda. Car now pulls and feels far stronger. Car has at least another 5 bhp just for doing that. Tim said it felt much stronger too. I also used Stealth's injector cleaner a while ago straight after the rr session and it made a bit of a difference after a full tank of using that. Very happy with me car now! Must have at least 195-200bhp now Not quite 207bhp
