People on the vwvortex forum run big power on there with no internal bottom end modifications. Stock bottom ends are very strong and engine failures are extremely rare - unless something else is very wrong, such as fuelling issues, pinking/detonation. With any forced induction modification a remap is vital to get the fuelling and air spot on. The VR6 engine is in fact far stronger than most Jap counterparts such as Imprezas which normally need internal engine mods to handle power over 300-350bhp reliably. A healthy VR engine would be one that has a smooth power curve on a dyno and makes good

I would say it would (pretty sure the 16v one does)... the standard bore of the vr is 2.25" so if you can confirm if the donor 8v one is the same then it will fit. Ask the seller to quickly measure the diameter of the exhaust - the end which would join the mid section of the exhaust.

lol at Steve... not just yet mate...spent too much on it to get rid off just yet. Ok had car checked over, no oil leaks, no problem with clutch at all, no oil being burnt in exhaust fumes and car drives very smoothly. However there is the occasional "oil burning smell" as though a very small amount is hitting something hot like the manifold. Any idea where a potential leak could be? Whereever it is it is only very very small as the smell only very occasionally happens. Thanks for any help.

I read recently that the vw boss said the R36 engine will only be used in the Passat but not in the golf after all. Pity! Why can't they make the R32 have the front end of that RGTI?? I far prefer the front of the golf gti than the r32 which has far more chrome/silver which looks aweful - whereas the back of the R32 is perfect... I think they got the two cars' front ends mixed up lol.

Buzzing........fuel pump methinks!
matth76 replied to adam_christie's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Hi mate. If you had all these problems before you bought it I would have walked away. Not worth the risk. Anyway I would get a full check over by The Phirm or Stealth - they will tell you straight away what the buzzing sound is and check your car is ok. Both are the best in the uk (I wouldn't take it anywhere else) for vr's and same price as a local garage but far far more experienced than a main dealer. Stealth has a rolling road so can also dyno your car and make sure your power curve is nice and smooth which is what it should be if everything is in good order with your bottom end. If it -
Speak to The Phirm mate. They have an EIP turboed vr6. Has approx 400bhp. Sam owns it and she says you don't lose any of the smoothness - exactly the same plus at 3000 revs all hell breaks loose and with lsd and / or quaif diff you will put the power down effectively. The kit comes with a thicker head gasket to lower the compression ratio to keep things reliable. The vr lump is strong enough to take a lot more power than 400bhp if the compression ratio is lowered. A turboed car is in a different league to a supercharged car. The torque is normally far higher and greater power is achieve

Oil consumption you have sounds normal for a VR. Mine uses the same amount. Not come across your other problem though. Maybe someone else has. If you ring Stealth or The Phirm (both are best in the business) they will give you lots of advice and tell you if it's common or not.

Power to weight they are about the same (the mk4 R32 is a fairly heavy car at about 1470kgs, the mk3 vr is 1170kgs). Obviously the gears and the four wheel drive make a difference in performance and handling, but mid range acceleration should be fairly similar if both cars are driven "properly". R32 looks far nicer though and very exclusive! Quarter mile times on paper seem fairly similar too for both cars.

I have a Milltek high flow cat, and have never had a problem at all with emissions. All high flow cats will get through an MOT, unless you have something else wrong with your car. They are expensive (about 2/3 the price of a full exhaust) and only give about 5-8bhp, same as a complete decat. However I wanted the power of a decat without the hassle of changing it each time for the MOT.

If you have cams yes. Anything less no. As you imply, a remap or chip on a lightly modded OBD2 makes absolutely no difference in power, however if you have cams or more extensive mods it is definitely required as the fuelling is drastically altered.

I have one and it has not given me any power increase - rolling road was done before and after. After 6 months mine got a slight blow in it - mine is "good" quality steel supposedly and not a cheap one. The cheaper ones will be far more prone to shearing/blowing. I also have uprated engine mounts flexi joints etc (everything that is recommended to prevent the s/s ex manis shearing) - didn't help at all - at some point it will get a blow ...just a matter of when. If I was doing it all again I would not do it... total waste of money mate. And yes they do sound tinny which is another negative,

Cheers guys.

Thanks for your reply. I read just now it was in 16. Is the 17 ins grp for the non-highline as well as highline?
-
Hi Stupid question but what insurance group is the mark3 Golf VR6 (standard non-highline)? Anyone know what it is for the mark4 R32? Thanks
-
Yes the rolling road sessions were on the same dyno at Stealth - and only a few months between them. I asked Vince about changes in ambient conditions and he said they correct for that and also said it wouldn't cause a huge drop of 17bhp. Everything electronically was checked and nothing was wrong. However it was a sat morning so didn't have time to check for much else. Although the car does still drive smoothly it doesn't have the 'pull' or 'poke' it did when I had the 207bhp. My gf thinks it is still fast but doesn't pull her head back to the passenger seat quite like it did lol. I'm gett

Is it at 1200 revs even when the car is warm? My car starts idling at around 1000-1100 revs when cold but after a minute or two will settle down to 700rpm.

VR6 bogging down at low revs.....
matth76 replied to Lamb's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Does it have cams? 268 cams give this effect... the car will appear "slowish" to hit 3000 revs then all hell lets loose! If it hasn't got cams get the cars on vag com (any good garage will do this check for free) and tell you if you have any sensor faults. -
Hi Firstly my car runs really smoothly when driving along - (although it has lost 15bhp mysteriously on the dyno but the power graph, although with 15bhp less, was still incredibly smooth - which added to the mystery). I have also noticed on the odd occastion when in reverse gear that I notice a burning smell - its not strong but definitely noticable and soon disappears within a few seconds. I also noticed the burning smell when I accelerated hard the other day (when the car was fully warmed up). The oil temp was at normal operating temp and so was the coolant. In the sunlight I could also se

If its properly mapped you should see around 280ish bhp (I think) and if you fit the shrick (and get it mapped afterwards too) you should see a healthy rise in torque (not much power though) possibly up to 20 extra lbs/ft, and more importantly that increase in torque should be low down in the revs which will help. Of course if you don't want the shrick I'll take it of your hands for a few £'s! Sounds like your car may not be mapped properly if you are having trouble with saxos and the like. Depends which hot hatches you are having trouble with... pulsars and starlet turbos will surprise qui

what sort of power would you expect from this spec????? (vw cup spec)
matth76 replied to clarkie's topic in Engine Tuning
You shouldn't need bigger injectors on that spec. I would say around 205-210bhp if in good condition. I wouldn't bother uprating the pistons and rods unless you go for much bigger power. -
Squealing noise from the wheels
matth76 replied to Kelster's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Mine does this too. Its the power assisted steering pump. Nothing to worry about unless its extremely noisy. -
Would an aftermarket exhaust have this flapper in it? If a cat back s/s exhaust system is fitted to a mk4 what power can it liberate and is a remap going to liberate any power or is the stock ecu very good?
-
lol...yeah I'd better change that now. Could the slightly blowing stainless six branch exhaust manifold cause problems with my fuelling making it run lean and therefore lead to pinking, and ignition retard?
