  1. I almost lost my vr yesterday going about 10mph round a tight roundabout. It all of a sudden understeered and the body swivelled a bit. If I had turned the steering wheel much more the back end would have come out, as it did a few months back. The road was only damp. Sorry to hear what happened and what an F'ing hassle!! Not what you need. See if you can get it repaired - get a good body work garage to look at it and see what they reckon then claim on your insurance to get it repaired. They shouldn't need to look at it if you get it repaired on the insurance. If its a big wreck they they ma
  2. The paper head gasket on the mark 3 is pretty poor compared to the later metal mk 4 one but normal to be slightly corroded (due to it being paper). It is also normal to have damp patches down your engine block too. Tensioners will wear but you need to replace all the chains too along with the tensioners. The chains etc all tend to need doing around the 100k mile mark on average so wear at 90k miles is normal - I had to have my chains all done at 76k miles. However the headgasket does not need changing - not unless you have extremely bad symptoms. However if the head is already off then you ma
  3. Also make sure the alarm fitter has done the wiring all correct and not interfered with the ecu or coilpack in anyway (not sure if he should go near the ecu or not when fitting an alarm though). Does sound odd that the car was fine before and not after! First of I would get the alarm fitter or better still one of his colleagues to come out and check the car over to make sure that the wiring is all correct - simply say you are not 100% happy and that the car was fine before and now not afterwards - the alarm fitter said himself it didn't sound right afterwards. They will check the electrics a
  4. How many hours labour to fit? Does the VR have anti-foll bars as standard but just not as good a quality?
  5. I'm on AOL which has 2mb for around £18 which is plenty fast enough and more importantly unlimited download limit. One thing to consider is that many ISP's will only advertise the "maximum" speed, such as 8MB. However depending on your location this drops quite a lot lower - if you ever download a file from the internet you can see a download rate. AOL tends to be pretty robust and stays at max level all the time. However the only downside with AOL is you can't use Outlook Express because they use different settings to most other ISP's. I don't personally like their browser but just use the
  6. Sure he didn't let off the power at 110?
  7. Welcome to the site wkd. I use the phirm too mate. They are near Farnham in the south, Surrey. Definitely worth the trip. They do all the cars for VW Performance Magazine and highly recommended on here. A lot of members on here use them. Extremely friendly and very experienced and charge half that of a main dealer. Stealth are very good too if you are in the midlands. You don't need to take the head off to do the chains. The cam cover needs to come off though and more importantly the gearbox needs to come out to do both the top and bottom chains. Its impossible to do either without the gearb
  8. Can't go wrong with Quantum Synta Silver. The local vw dealers round here and both the specialists I have taken my car to recommend this oil. Whatever oil you put in make sure it is the semi-synthetic 10w 40 (I think this is correct). I used to use GTX magnatec and found I used up far more of the GTX than the synta silver I now use. I find mine goes down to half the max level on the dipstick every three weeks roughly. The vr will use up a lot of oil.
  9. Mine makes approximately 155-160hp at the wheels and has between 190-200bhp at the fly. Strange that your rolling road garage would calculate bhp at the fly as being 193bhp when your whp is 123! Wheel horsepower is the only accurate indication of power (unless the engine on its own was dynoed) - the bhp (at the fly) which is what most people quote when comparing power figures is calculated by the rolling road garage using their own formula, so will vary from garage to garage, and is not truely accurate like the wheel hp figure. If I was you I'd put it on the rolling road at Stealth (£50 a se
  10. For an OBD2 that is pretty low. Most OBD2's standard make around 185bhp - roughly 140-150hp at the wheels. To have just over 120hp at the wheels is very low. Does sound like your timing (as Antera says) is out slightly - causing your power loss. You can lose 30bhp easily if your timing is out - believe me I've had this problem before.
  11. 123hp at the wheels is very low. It should be more like 140-150 at least at the wheels. Best to get it checked out on vag-com, or if this doesn't show up any faults get a rolling road diagnostic to check your ignition timing etc. Stealth are the guys for this if you can get there.
  12. R32vr6, I am not going to comment on the details of this matter, nor am I going to respond to your post above. It won't benefit anyone. This case is over a year old now and best forgotten.
  13. The standard lump shouldn't need uprating internally as its extremely strong and can handle huge power. You would need to lower the compression ratio though, bigger fuel injectors, fuel pump etc, and fit uprated head bolts. However if it is all in bits then I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to fit uprated forged pistons etc!
  14. Hi Roan, I personally had bad experience with my local vw main dealer - and so did my gf with her brand new polo. A mate of mine who has an audi S3 also had bad experience with Caffyns. However some main dealers are probably a lot better (they should be good considering what they charge per hour!!) Following my bad service with my local vw main dealer I now take it to The Phirm who are a VR6 specialist and charge half what they do but are far more experienced. The Phirm do all the cars for VW Performance magazine. The Phirm are based in the south near Farnham, surrey. Stealth are another ver
  15. www.thephirm.co.uk or www.stealthracing.co.uk by the far the best mate for doing anything with the vr6 engine. They'll fit your charger.
  16. Mine makes max torque at just over 5000 revs. Every car's different - depends what mods you have. A decat probably will lose you a slight bit of low down torque but shift it further up.
  17. That's pretty much what the phirm did with my car as I had the same fault. Car runs like a beauty now! However it is fairly normal to have this fault if you have 268 cams, like you and I have.
  18. Hi Marc Where abouts are you? If you can, try to get to Stealth (if you're in the midlands) or The Phirm (if you're in the south east). They are very good and everyone on here will recommend both. What age is your VR? If you have one N reg onwards (middle of 1995 onwards) it should be the OBD2 model, which means it has the later ecu and a few other differences to the earlier vr. It also has about 185bhp as standard compared to the factory 174 figure. My car has a full Milltek exhaust and high flow cat (still keeping it legal for mot's but more free flowing), a cold air induction kit (BMC)
  19. If you do go for the later model you need to check it's had the S54 recall done (very important). Applies to the later 2001-2003 manufactured E46's. The recall seems to only apply to M3's with the S54 engine.. http://members.roadfly.com/jason/m3engines.htm
  20. What is the twin vanos issue? Is this something to do with engine management or the engine itself? The latest E46 with the two lots of twin exhaust pipes (which the earlier E36 model doesn't have) looks perfect. I didn't realise the E46 went as far back as 98. Are they all 3 litres with 320bhp, or is that the E36, not the latest E46? I thought the E46 had around 340-360bhp? What is the Evo model? Any resources on the net to show the different models/history/year of mfr etc? Good luck in your search adds
