  1. Yeah, it is 80mm. I asked lazy_arse_pie as its his car. He said its had arch work as well.
  2. It would be interesting to find out how much the chain, guides and tensioners have worn/stretched with less than 70k on the clock. Keep us updated on what was the cause of the rattle (if the garage shows you the old parts).
  3. Is it possible to check this bolt at home? Im in the same boat with the rattling on 71k and my cars booked in for a service at the phirm in about 3 weeks but would like to check it out before that. Oh and the Phirm have said if the chains need doing, its about £700 which includes a new clutch. Pretty reasonable and you can definitely trust them to do a proper job. Pete
  4. Thats what i thought but i took mine to my local garage when my coolant was boiling (120 degrees under normal driving) and was losing water. They did a sniff test on it and assured me my head gasket needed doing. I took it to the phirm for a second opinion (and as they had given me a much better quote for head gasket) and they diagnosed the problem as a cracked coolant housing and a broken thermostat. Had these sorted out and its right as rain now. I dont know if anyone else has experienced this but i was as puzzled as the mechanic who did the sniff test. Sorry, this doesnt really help but its
  5. Is doing a Vento front end conversion on a mk3 golf as simple as swapping over the bonnet, grille, bumper and headlights or is it a pig of a job? Do u need the vento wings or are they the same? Cheers Pete
  6. Right, i'm now over the moon as what my local garage diagnosed as the head gasket and quoted me over £900 to be put right, The Phirm (who quoted me £500-£600) tested it and found that the coolant housing was leaking and the thermostat was sticking causing the oil temperature to run at about 120 degrees!! Anyway, they replaced both the thermostat and housing (Only £170 in the end) and the car is back to its old smoothly running self. Well pleased i took it to them to look at rather than going ahead with the head gasket!! I'll definately be using The Phirm again.
  7. I've decided on having the work done at the phirm as their price is good and i know shes in safe hands. Had fun finding the place though! Its in the middle of nowhere!
  8. Well, my head gaskets gone and its gonna be about £800 to sort it out. Does that sound like a reasonable quote? Does a mk4 gasket fit straight on? and wots the difference(any power gains/price difference) Cheers Pete
  9. Ive just got some new (second hand) headlights and both of them steamed up in heavy rain and when i washed the car. They have both now cleared but the lenses are now dirty on the inside and could do with a clean. My first question is, how do the lenses come off the lights? I took the four metal clips off top and bottom but couldnt get the lenses off. I would have thought they should come off pretty easily once the clips were off?? and failing this, is there a way of cleaning the inside of the lenses without taking them off? Im probably just being stupid but i dont want to force the lenses and
  10. I had to take the grille and bumper off my vr to fit my crystal indicators and fogs. Theyre JOM ones which i bought at E38 and the fitting clips just bent when i tried to put them in so i had to take off the bumper and push the light in from the front while i pulled the clip from behind the bumper with a pair of pliers!! Loads of hastle and i couldnt believe how badly designed the fitments were as there was no way to possibly get them in in the normal way!! They do look good though. has anyone else had this problem with JOM fogs and indicators or am i just unlucky?
  11. Would 16" audi RS4 wheels look any good on a VR thats been lowered about 40mm?? cant really picture it. If anyones got any pics, of this setup, they would be appreciated. Also, they are replica audi wheels. Is there generally any difference between replica and genuine wheels? ie. quality, weight etc.
  12. Yeah, thats what i was thinking. I'm after Design 90's ideally but they mostly seem to come in 6inch fronts. I think i might hold out to try and get 7's and 8's just to make sure they're wide enough.
  13. Thanks for that. Also, what is the width of the standard BBS wheels fitted to the later VR6's and would 6inch wide wheels on the front be too skinny?
  14. Apologies if this issue has already been raised (Im guessing it has) but i am considering getting some new wheels for my 1996 vr and im not really up for doing any arch work so was wondering whether these wheels will fit. There are two sets im considering which are: ET52.3 7Jx16 with 205/55/16 tyres (front) and ET52.3 8Jx16 with 225/50/16 tyres (rear) OR ET52.3 6Jx16 (front) and ET52.3 8Jx16 (rear) (or possibly ET52) Can anyone tell me if these will fit my car with or without adapters/archwork or if im dreaming!! Also is there any advantage/disadvantage to having wide wheels on the rear and n
