  1. Hi Just had a rolling road session with Stealth. My car is now making 190bhp instead of its original 207bhp. Nothing at all has been altered on the engine since the last rr session. The only thing to have happened since my last rolling road session is that my car overheated back in May/June when the thermostat went. However my car's oil temp at the time only hit 118 and since then no water has been lost (meaning my head gasket is fine) and the car still drives very smoothly. I wasn't aware anything was actually wrong until I had the rolling road session yesterday. Vince at Stealth is pu
  2. Best bet Mark is to get it on Vag-Com. A specialist will (should) do this for free. Vag-com will scan your car for any sensor faults. If that doesn't solve it a rolling road session (£50 at Stealth Racing) will check your fuelling and timing is correct. Vag-com may not show up a faulty MAF sensor... It could be something to do with your leads or plugs. Good luck mate. Let us know how you get on and what the cause is.
  3. Hi My Goodyear F1's still have tread on them (haven't reached the minimum thread indicators yet) but they are going to need changing in a couple of months. However twice I have slightly skidded in them (just going round a tight roundabout at low speed!) which I never used to with my old Continentals. The F1's are very good in the dry though. Ideally I want something that is safe in the wet though more than anything. I've heard of Rainsports... are these good and who makes them? Any other very good makes for the wet? Thanks for any help or info. Cheers Matt
  4. Sounds like tappets... When the engine goes faster the noise will disappear. I wouldn't worry about it...vr's tend to have noisy tappets..esp from the area around the air box at the top of the engine.
  5. Cams can make a car pop a bit in the exhaust esp when you go down to a low gear or let your foot off the throttle...but that is overlap leading to unburnt fuel. You shouldn't lose power though and the popping is only slight. Sounds like you have something else going on. Do you have any other mods? Def sounds like you unburnt fuel for some reason. If you're near Stealth they should check your car on their rolling road and sort your prob out straight away.
  6. I'll have to try it when I find an open road and when its dry... too much traffic these days(!)
  7. I'd class it as a hot hatch. A hatch back with 0-60 time 7 secs (less if its lightly modded) is pretty much a hot hatch. I agree its not as lairy in looks as some older RS turbos and the like but it has far more performance but with subtle looks. I don't think many people even realise it has a 2.8 let alone a v6! Most people know my car is a "performance" car though as nearly every young bloke seems to try to prove something with my car. Its the same weight as a civic type r with the same performance (if lightly modded with exhaust and air filter). You definitely have to lower it. For some
  8. Why do you have to run it in after cleaning the filter?
  9. Synta Silver is probably actually better mate. Most of the specialists recommend Synta Silver which is semi synthetic. Most on here use it.
  10. I agree mate...I have a BMC and havent fitted the cold air feed. Stealth rolling roaded cars with and without the cold air feed... no power difference at all (the rolling road sessions all had cold air blown from the front of the car - as a normal rolling road session should - with the bonnets closed). Agree with you...the sound is awesome when you floor it above 3k revs!
  11. Hi mate. Could be pinking... I've been told its supposed to sound similar to nails dropping on the ground... although I had bad pinking one time and couldn't hear a thing above the engine noise. If you do have pinking then I wouldn't rev it too high.. should still be able to drive it but just take it easy until you get on the rolling road. Stealth should be able to diagnose and fix anything, unless you know of another vr specialist further north nearer you.
  12. Performance VW magazine sells in America.
  13. I had exactly the same problem when I needed to disconnect my battery... the only way you can stop the alarm bleeding your ears is to use the small key you should have ...it simply goes into the alarm box on the driver side of the engine bay just underneath the windscreen washers. It is a small key about an inch in length... if you haven't got it then you could get one made up (I assume) with the key fob code (please tell me the seller gave you that when they sold you the car - otherwise you will pay through the nose if you lose or break your key fob) If the previous owner didnt give you any
  14. The standard filter has an air feed that is exposed directly to the front of the car (albeit a small air feed) and that was designed that way. The BMC is not a lot different but more efficient. If the factory had a similar design set up they can't be wrong. I wouldn't worry mate. It will not suck in cold water at all.
  15. Stealth do the best remap (far far better than any off the shelf chip)... cost is £300. However I really wouldn't bother with one as you won't gain any power at all if you have an OBD2 vr. Once you get cams or bigger mods then a remap is a good idea. A standard OBD2 vr actually has around 185. The earlier OBD1 has 174 and has a totally different ECU (which does benefit from a remap). However the OBD2 ecu is very good and adapts to minor mods very well. I asked all of this to stealth as I had exactly the same mods as you at the time and Stealth said any gain would be very minimal. Howeve
  16. Hi Recently my steering has become a bit vague...its not noisy at all. But when going over bumps the steering wheel tends to try to move, so I have to hold it slightly tighter. Also when going round some corners it doesn't feel right so much so that I don't have the confidence to go at the same speed through corners I used to - I originally thought it was tramlining but its definitely not this... There's a bit of play in the steering before the car changes direction. Its not too bad... as said no noise at all, but just not how it used to be. I have had the car lowered at beginning of year
  17. Hi I know the gearbox is not the best feature of the VR but I find it relatively hard to put the gear stick into each gear.. its not overly hard just notchy. No problem at all coming "out" of each gear...just slightly tough "putting" it into each gear, especially first gear. It's always been like this. I can live with it.. Just curious if this is a normal feature of all mk 3 golf vr's? Thanks for any info. Matt
  18. If you're losing water and no obvious leaks then that is possibly(unfortunately) a sign of a fault head gasket... Or it could possibly be a temperamental water pump (which may need replacing) best bet is to ring Stealth or The Phirm and see what they say.
  19. I've also heard of Puma Racing... anyone used them on their VR?
  20. NS Racing is another supplier of chargers... very good value from what I have heard... but not used them before. They supplied a lot of chargers to members on here recently when they did a group buy.
  21. Agree with above... The Phirm (if you live in the south) are one of the best VR specialists in the country.. or if you live in the midlands or east Stealth Racing are also very good. Both these companies will help you out... far cheaper than a main dealer and much more experienced.
  22. I would take it to a VR6 specialist - either Stealth (in the midlands) or The Phirm (in the south east) - both are the best vr specialists in the country and well worth a phone call or even better a visit (far cheaper than a main dealer and far far more experienced). Stealth would be able to put it on their rolling road (£50 a session) and diagnose if anything is wrong in your timing or fuelling. Something is definitely wrong with your car. A standard OBD2 should make 185bhp on average... 174 is down on what it should be... with a decat and air filter you should be making close to or above
