  1. You don't normally need restrictors on journal turbos, but run it without one first and see what happens. If you get oil leaking into the turbine housing (lots of blue smoke) then try a 0.065" restrictor like this - http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ATP-OIL-022&Category_Code=ATP-OIL1
  2. Same injectors on both engines
  3. Just drive it normally fella, with the normal Quantum silver oil VW sell. Try and give the engine lots of over-run and acceleration, but avoid maximum revs. Yep, it will be fine to run the charger whilst running in.
  4. You get used to the noise. What gets you after a while is a stonking headache from all the fumes :-) VRs have a lovely resonance around 3.5K on WOT that shakes the floor :-)
  5. The Bosch or Ford EDIS we've already discussed mate. If you want a stronger spark that stock and want to use your stock leads, the Bosch is for you. If you want the strongest spark possible, you'll need the Ford EDIS ones I've been linking too, but that will need a change of leads and more fabrication work.
  6. Have a search on the Vortex, they blow easily. MSD like anything else work fine in the environment they were designed for. They are Chevy V8 coils, not VR6 ;-)
  7. Yeah don't bother with gas flowing, just gasket match the intake ports and that's it. Bigger valves are the key as already mentioned. I have this +1mm kit (Turbo spec) in my head and his cams as well and it's superb. Made hell of a difference. http://www.spturbo.com/onlinestore/index.php/vw/mk3/vr6/engine/cylinder-head-valvetrain/stainless-high-flow-intake-valve-39mm-47.html
  8. Depends. The voltage output is proportional to the dwell time and drive current from the coil drivers. Running the Bosch pack gives around 32KV @ 3ms dwell. The MSDs knock out about 40KV at the same dwell IIRC, but the Bosch is by far the most reliable of the two.
  9. You only need to worry about things like that when pushing big boost pressures. Put it where you want mate, it will work just fine.
  10. Yip! If using a 4" MAF, the injector signals are smaller, so that bumps up the mpg too :-) FWIW, when I put the 2.8 24V lump into my Corrado, I'm going to run it on my standalone with some cams and see if I can better the standard mpg. Should be doable. Especially as my VR6 T averages 27mpg and that has 400hp! :-)
  11. FPR - standard one will be fine. If you want MSDs, these are the ones I've used - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8224/ They're bulky and don't last long. Other options:- http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DUI-31738/ http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ACC-140035/ Premade HT wires with EDIS ends for the above - http://www.fourseasontuning.com/index.php?product=834&product_code=56-1148-EDIS.RED This is the one I currently use - http://www.bosch-motorsport.de/pdf/components/ignition_coils/3x2.pdf Unlike the EDIS one, it the bolt spacing is an exact match to the stock one. It's only 35KV
  12. Bigger, stronger sparks is of more benefit to forced induction really, but it certainly can't hurt a normally aspirated VR6 either! :-) I've done some coil tests, comparing MSD, Bosch and standard and the standard pack is pretty weak, but most VR6s run OK with that. The advantge of the Ford coilpack is cost, they are cheap and the advantage of the Bosch pack is reliability. I wouldn't recommend the MSD coils to be honest, they're hassle and don't last long.
  13. The Toyo R1R is supposed to be quote good and the Hankook RS2 gets good reviews. They are a half way between the full R888 track tyre and a road tyre, so a good compromise.
  14. Completely agree. The orginal red VW ones or Schimmels are the best leads I've seen personally. The construction quality of the VW ones is second to none imo. If you want a mega spark, fit a Ford EDIS coilpack and open your plugs out to 1.1mm :-)
  15. Hey mate No I'm happy with mine as it is running ~ 12psi. I was never in it for the numbers game. I just wanted a much faster daily and it's plenty fast enough for me, and more importantly, it's reliable too :-) I'm using the 0.82 housing mate, which feels spot on for an every day car to me :-)
  16. Cam timing out? 1 tooth out on the VR6 makes for one very sluggish motor, even on standard compression. It's worth double checking it just to outrule it. Even the pros get it wrong from time to time :-)
  17. /\ Most definitely! I used a pillar drill to take mine apart :-) Same with the Tial dump valves, if you use one. The lid will take your teeth out if it flies apart suddenly! Be VERY careful not to pinch the delicate diaphragm between the two halves of the WG when you reassemble it. It'll cause huge boosting problems if you split it and they're not cheap to replace! Turbosmart v Tial. I can't tell you why one costs more than the other Russ, but they are both very highly regarded. Turbosmart are Australian, and they certainly know a thing or two about high quality tuning products, suc
  18. LOL, I don't build things to a price mate :-) I build with the best, or not at all ;-)
  19. Dyno tune for me please. You might get lucky with a generic chip, you might not. There simply is no better way to tune an engine than give it what it needs whilst it's running there in front of you. Generic chips rely too much on Motronic doing most of the tuning automatically and code libraries that have worked for other people, but which might not necessarily work for you.
  20. Yeah good site that. Borg Warner EFR turbos coming soon too. I'd better hide my credit card!! Turbosmart and TIAL are much of a muchness. Very similar quality. Personally speaking, TIAL products have been 100% reliable for me over many 1000s of miles, so I won't use anything else.
  21. Old VWs never die, they just get faster :-) I annoyed a TT-RS driver the other day. I only run ~ 12psi and he couldn't get past me. He had a bit more top end though because of the gearing, but in the midrange, 50 - 120 speeds, he stood no chance. I use the 02A with 3.68 R&P, and a Quaife. I'm happy with that. Trans is the original. 200K old, 60K of that with the GT35R beating on it. It's just about being sensible with the power and driving it properly in bad conditions :-)
  22. Good stuff! Yeah MK2s do have more room! A lot easier to get the engine in and out of too. Let me know how the MS3 goes, I've heard it's pretty good.
  23. Makes no odds really mate. It will prefer 95 unleaded as a low comp engine :-)
