  1. I think the whole reason behind the 2.9 was to make the Corrado the fastest production VW, which it was until the R32 came along. They just wanted to eek 150mph out of it on the Autobahn, so it needed some top end.... hence the breathing setup for a more pronounced pull up there. The Corrado doesn't really start pulling until 4000rpm. It's a sluggish old boat below that. Leggy gearing, heavy car, it's pretty underwhelming! By comparison, the MK3 OBD2 VR6s (highline etc) pull just aswell, are just as quick, but have more torque low down. To be perfectly honest I have no idea why folk want
  2. That one was a generic American part, can't remember the length of it!
  3. Not sure if it helps but I've run the 2.9 throttle and intake on my Corrado, and also the OBD2 setup (smallest throttle) and intake etc and I preferred how it drove on the 2.8 stuff. The 2.9 stuff gives small gains at the top end but the throttle is a lot heavier.
  4. I assume you mean the main exhaust one and not the wastegate? And which build? The early one, or the later one? LOL! Pretty sure on the latest build I used the Jetex ilok 150mm long (3" bore) - http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/custom_parts.php?mat=Stainless&dia=3.0+inch
  5. Don't Focus ST's spool early like 1.8Ts? Quick spooling blowers need more fuel more of the time, but it also depends what AFR they run at in boost. Some run quite lean these days. Don't forget also that VR6s carry 15 gallons. Some cars only carry 10, or 12, so VRs can boost their apparent mpg that way ;-)
  6. I won't get there until about 2:30 so you'll probably be mapped and gone by then! Pete, yeah I might be up for that :-)
  7. Ah OK, so you're putting in the ground work for future power, nice one! 300hp should sort your mate out in the meantime!
  8. Cool! What time are you going to be at Stealth? I'll be there as well in the afternoon :-)
  9. I think what we should say is "a turbo VR6 can give better mileage than a Schrick fitted NA golf." ;-) I don't want to be the cause of false hope, but to be honest turbos should be done for the grunt factor rather than for economy, but they CAN be more economical than NA if well mapped :-) As Craggsy said, it does depend on how hard you drive and what the spec of the engine is, how much boost you run etc etc. It's difficult for us to guage how other's drive too. Some people's definition of granny driving is using full throttle 70% of the time instead of 95% of the time, and others is never
  10. I've not used an aux pump for 2 years now. Mine's a daily and I've not noticed any issues :-) I can see why VW fit them but it's such a crap, ineffective little pump it's barely worth it. I did consider using a much bigger pump, but VW needed to consider battery life if it runs on for 5 mins after shutdown, but us modders don't generally care about things like that :-)
  11. Yeah, moral of the story, add a turbo :-) Everyone's doing it! Even the OEs! Formula 1 is going back to small capacity turbo too!
  12. 300hp and you're running an 044? :-) Man that thing will do your head in! Take it off until you're ready to go for the big 500 :-) The GSS340 easily supports 400hp. I use one myself. I took my 044 off just before christmas because it wasn't doing anything on a 400 brake engine, other than making a horrendous racket, despite being submersed in a surge tank. No a 90 deg won't restrict flow so long as it's full bore all the way through and not too sharp.
  13. Shame it broke apart as they come apart and can be sealed up again usually, but they are more hassle than they're worth. I took mine off a long time ago.
  14. It's up to you mate, angle the throttle where ever is convenient for you :-)
  15. Yip, it's a good idea to get it checked. A fellow VRT chap I know made his own shortcake with the stock lower half and he had no end of running issues with it. Turned out in the end to be a warped mating face because of the welding, so the intake gasket didn't seal properly on 2 cylinders. He got it skimmed flat again and it's been spot on since.
  16. Yeah, moved quite a lot by the look of it. That would have wasted a couple of hours on the dyno so it's a good job you started this thread and did some pre-dyno checks!
  17. An age old debate that's never had a definitive answer mate :-) K&N, BMC etc swear blind cotton is the best. RamAir, ITG etc, swear blind foam is the best. The only truth in a sea of opinions and unscientific tests is this:- The OE paper filter is the best filter, bar none, for stopping dirt entering your engine. If noise is more important, take your pick from the 100s of filters out there :-)
  18. Yeah I got my VDO oil guage from ETB instruments. http://www.etbinstruments.com/ It's been reliable for a few years now.
  19. Agreed, I don't think I'd fancy attempting 200mph in a VW :-) Most road legal tyres give up at 186..... you'd need some expensive 200mph capable tyres I would imagine? You'd need some mental power to get up there too. Texas Mile VR6 T did it though, but it had 288 cams and a schitt load of power!
  20. I've often thought about using the lower half of a schrick as the base for a shorty intake for it's balanced runner lengths. Although the ally quality is sheet compared to VW's, so it may not tig up that well. As always, if you're subjecting OE parts to welding, make sure it you get it skimmed afterwards to ensure the mating surfaces are flat.
  21. What Calico says..... Or maybe the 8374 if you're gunning for the big numbers :-)
  22. The net result is more of the flow from your 30psi will get into the cylinders and you'll get a bigger bang. You do your own mapping like I do and as you've seen for yourself, the fuel map shape follows the engine torque curve. I guarantee if you put 268s in, you'll have to plump up the 6000rpm + load sites wider than 50% throttle :-) If you compare a stock intake + stock cam VRT to a short intake + cam'd VRT, the stock VRT torques up a little sooner in the midrange, but it also falls away fairly quickly - depending on turbo sizing and other factors. The shorty + cams keeps the torque curv
  23. Ah yes, the trigger wheel. I forgot about that. They are prone to cracking like that and it's always wise to replace them when working on the cams, they're about a tenner from the dealer. I'm afraid you'll have to replace it mate :-(
