  1. Power steering fluid - there is a resevoir with a GREEN cap in the engine bay, in between the battery and the engine. Unscrew the lid and have a look at the level of fluid on the dipstick.
  2. Power steering does make a noise when you turn the wheel, but I wouldn't call it a buzzing noise. Check your power steering fluid is on MAX. I had a power steering leak a while ago which made the steering noisy when turning. Also have somone turn the steering with the bonnet up and see if you can hear the noise when stationary in the area of the rubber aux
  3. When its cold outside (near zero degrees) mine whines in the morning for a few mins. Sounds a bit like a milk float. Its always done this with no problems.
  4. Also - you need to remove screws holding under-engine plastic trays to the lower bumper splitter.
  5. There is a 'how to' guide on fitting coilovers in the Premium section on here. Have a look for some pointers. I changed them on my MK2 ages ago and it wasn't too difficult. I'd buy VW ones to be honest as they do perish over time, and I would guess that the VW ones would last the longest.
  6. Or it could have been me driving the M3. I am a shit fast driver and I dont mind admitting it - surley not everyone who posts on a forum can be L.Hamilton?. Too many people think they are a great driver. I'm not, and am old enough to admit it. I can drive normally, but when I put my foot down and really hammer it I just dont have the confidence to go proper fast. So I would have thought that the M3 driver just couldn't drive fast, as an M3 would have won the day
  7. Not bled PS either. I would have a look at the PS pipes near the PS pump and see if you can remove a clip and drain. I do know that if you drain and refill you should turn the PS pump by hand a number of times to get it full of fluid. New racks are pretty expensive, you may get a second hand one for £50. When you get the rack done, buy your own power steering fluid from GSF or VW to give to the garage who fits it, as they'll prob just stick any old stuff in it.
  8. I was charged 2 hours labour for putting in a new rack. Bit of a long shot, but what sort of PS fluid have you got in there? VW's need a specific type of fluid (about £4.90 for 1L) otherwise you can damage seals etc.. It should be green. Maybe worth changing it as a last ditch attempt. You can also buy stuff which claims to 'smooth out' your power steering.
  9. According to my Bentley manual its "rear of cylinder head, in thermostat housing" There should be 3 sensors on the thermostat housing, one of them is the one you want. From the diagram its the one on the end nearest engine.
  10. Mine freezes too. Happened last week when it was freezing, rear nearside stuck on.
  11. I've had a load of different ABS codes on my car, from the one above to red herring abs sensor faults. All mine were down to cracked solder joints in the ABS ECU board. Got them checked and re-soldered. May be worth a look as it'll be cheaper than changing your pump.
  12. When mine was running like a dog it was the MAF connector plug. Check the wiring into the MAF multi plug. The wires on mine were corroded, so the car had no idea how much to fuel as the MAF was giving strange readings.
  13. I've just changed my battery with a Bosch Silver one. But I can't get it secure - the little clamp thing doesn't seem to keep the battery too secure - you can slide it back and forth Anyone else had this issue?
  14. What sort of whirring? On cold days my engine sounds a bit like a milk float until its got some heat in it. Always been this way.
  15. I think I know the pipe you mean. Does it have 3 pipes? Mine burst at the junction of the pipes (where the rubber is thicker). VW parts dept for about £50 im afraid.
  16. Does sound like the starter motor. Check that the braided earthing strap on the starter motor has not corroded away or is loose.
  17. I need a new OS wing mirror. The black plastic shroud is smashed so I need a whole new mirror. If I buy a non electrical mirror is it possible to remove the electrical bits from my broken mirror into the non electric one?
  18. From memory thermo housing is attached with 3 allen bolts. Should be easy to take off BUT in reality its a nightmare to get them off due to them being very stiff and very little room to work. I had a go and gave up in the end.
  19. It does sound like the thermostat has packed up. In the 5 years I've had my VR the temp has sat at 90 other thatn when the thermostat packed up.
  20. Think I might take your advice and just get the rust taken off on the wings and sprayed up, along with my mirrors which some toerag smashed up last night
  21. My front wings are rusting on the arch, as well as the rear arches. I'm thinking that getting new front wings will be better than getting the current ones grinded and resprayed. Does anyone know where I can get new pattern wings from? Or infact how much VW charge? Ta.
  22. I got that code when mine wasnt running right. Cleaned throttle body (didnt make any difference) and had to replace some corroded wires in the plug whcih connects to the MAF which corted it out
  23. I do my own oil changes and always change the sump nut and washer and have never had it leak oil. I dont use a torque wrench, just tighten it with a normal spanner. I'd say that you've a problem with the sump.
  24. I get most of my parts from German Swedish and French car parts.
