  1. Hi All My VR has failed MOT on a leaking rear leg and as she has covered 115,000 I thought about changing all the suspension for something a little firmer but not aftermarket firm, Now I was wondering if I could change all the suspension legs for 16V GTi legs as they are better than VR ones " so ive been told"!!! I have priced up a set of 35mm lowering springs but I'm stuck on what to do with the legs, do I plump for std VR legs all round or go for 16V legs? Dose anyone know what sort of rates the std vr springs and legs are against 16V legs and springs, Love the car but she does handle cra
  2. Hi All I have had some developments with my misfiring VR, Had a compression test done and 5 of the cylinders are 140 psi and Number 4 is 150 psi, so all seems fine with the head gaskit Just been out for a run in the VR and after 10 min run, car gets up to temp and it starts missing and coughing as usual, got home and I could smell a hot metal smell, took a look under the car and the Cat was bright orange all over!! and so was the exhaust from the Cat to the back box, the exhaust is stainless steel, front pipe and manifold were fine, Any feed back would be great Cheers
  3. Are yes I see zorro thanks for that, will get a compression test done straight away. The cylinders that stop firing are the one nearest the driver and the the right hand front, Its never had a head gaskit in 108,000 but its dose have full VW service history. I have checked all the leads and there all fine, have swapped the offending cylinder leads but no difference after 10 min, This started coming down the motorway after about an hours travel at a steady 80 ish, it just dropped to 4/5 cylinders then trying to fire back on 6, I stopped for a coffee then it started fine then after 10 min missi
  4. Hi All thanks for the replys To cabrio man Why would checking the compression be my next step?? The chains are starting to rattle and I'm saving the pennies up as we speak to get them done but loose chains wont make it misfire when its hot would it?? I would have thought checking the injectors and fuel pump supply and fuel filters would be next?? Has anyone else had these symptoms on there VR I do love the VR but its unreliableness is getting on my T**TS and it might have to go, a friend bought a 328i at roughly the same time and he has only ever put petrol in it, Im thinking better performan
  5. My 1996 VR6 golf highline is missing again but different symptoms this time Everythis is fine for 10 min or so then as soon as its all warmed through it starts missing and firing on 5 then trying to fire on 6 then it pretends to be a tractor!!, Turn it off wait 20 min then start it up and its smooth as glass for the next 10 min Ive changed the plugs for NGK platinium and new vw leads, its also had a new coil pack and its still bloody doing it but the really annoying bit is that it dosent show up any fault codes when analysed with the plugin snap on analyser........
  6. Hope some one can help My VR is running really lumpy like its running on 4 or 5 cylinders, and its like it all through the rev range Ive put a brand new coil pack on and still the same Only have light mods on the car ss exhaust, panel filter and chip, its been running fine for nearly 2 years, the problem started when I didnt catch it starting the other day turned the key again and it took ages to start then ran lumpy ever since Checked and cleaned the earth on the ECU still the same Checked the plugs and leads and there all good but still the same lumpyness I have taken the leads off one at a
  7. Hi All After owning a various mk 1, 2, 3golfs and corrados I decieded it was time to enter the VR6 ownership After a 7 month search I found the car that fitted my spec and budget, a 5 door 1996 mulberry Highline, 2 owners from new both women Full VAG service history, with 95000 on the clock, parting with £2000 I took charge of my first VR6, now ive heard stories of reliability problems but had nothing major go wrong in 16 months, "Alarm problems mostly" Now Ive read loads of stuff regarding the VR6 v Type R but didnt really care that the Type R was the faster of the 2 cars according to most b
  8. Hi all Hope someone can help. I have a VR6 Highline with OBD2 electrics The FF Alarm has wiped its codes out so the key fobs now dont work Do I have to go to my local VW dealer to get this fixed or is it an easy fix? The main problem started because the car wont tick over at all, thus all the stop start town driving has drained the battery and when I put a booster on it fell off which I reconnected and the alarm came on, Had the ECU read by auto electrician who showed me the alarm fault but he said my best bet would be main dealer. Can any body help Cheers
