  1. Thanks for the suggestion. I've not got round to cleaning the earth points yet, but will post back when I have
  2. Obd1 in a mk2, just driving along and the temp, revs, speedo and fuel gauges dropped to zero and the LCD readouts go blank - like the clocks have been unplugged. First few times it happened for a few seconds at a time, but on the last 30 mile run it is happening much more frequently and a few times The whole clocks were blank/zero for a few minutes. Didn't seem to affect the engine running though. I've tried unplugging the clocks and the car still runs (actually unplugged them to make sure they were plugged in properly but that connector is very well seated). I've looked at the earth strip wit
  3. I've got the same problem, did you ever get to the bottom of it?
  4. On the first key turn all the lights come up as usual, the fuel gauge climbs up and coolant temp if it's warm enough, but as soon as the key is turned to start the engine the gauges drop back to zero. Anyone have any ideas? thanks!
  5. So what do you all do when they freeze on? I can't imagine there are hords of MK3s driving around with glowing rear disks....or are there?
  6. My early OBD1 MK3 Golf's rear disks have developed a problem. The rear offside brake must have been dragging as the disk was orange-hot, but I kept an eye on it and the problem went so I put it down to the -5 Celsius and the car sitting for a week. Later on the now familar burning smell returned and I found it was the nearside rear disk now with the problem. We've had the calipers off both sides, the pistons move ok, the top sliders both needed a bit of de-gunking but now move freely and we eased off the handbrake cables incase that was the problem. A couple of miles around town and all see
  7. Tada! First connector we checked.. the main loom to engine one in the engine bay. All gunked up with water ad rust (A slightly leaking auxillary pump next to it most likely suspect). Quick spray with electrical connection cleaner and the lamps aren't flashing anymore, the revs are steady and the oil temperature is working. Unfortunately the coolant temp gauge is now stuck swung over to maximum and the speedo seems to still be doing its jumpy thing slightly. Better start hunting for some replacement clocks then.... thanks for the suggestions, hope my misfortune saves someone some time tracki
  8. it gets worse. This morning I started her up (cooland and oil lamps flashing as ever), switched to oil temp on the MFA as my only warning of a temperature problem and set off. A few miles down the road I noticed the speedo wasn't steadily indicating the speed, but jumping a few mph up or down at a time as I sped up or braked - maybe this is always like this and I only noticed because of the two flashing lamps just under the speedo. A few more miles down the road and the engine started stuttering kind of like being on the rev limiter but more jerky and then it would be ok for a second or so th
  9. Started the car up over the weekend (it hadn't been run for a couple of days) and watched the coolant temp gauge rise straight off the scale and the warning lamp start flashing. Checked oil and coolant levels and they were both fine. Changed both 4 and 2 pin sensors at the front of the block which didn't make a difference. Needing the car and all the shops being shut I ran her up to temperature, saw that the fans were cutting in and out as expected and the oil temperature was behaving as usual so took her out. While driving the coolant gauge and lamp switched between warning and 'normal' whi
  10. thanks for that! I saw your post and that it had no replies... Can you remember how long it took? thanks, jc
  11. K reg mk3 Golf VR. I need to change the fuel pump. I've heard this isn't an easy job as the pump pushes into the tank and is pretty fiddly, does this sound about right? Has anyone got any tips for making the process go any easier? thanks in advance! jc
  12. Hey, sorry if this is in the wrong section. I've got a K reg VR6 Golf (12V, not sure if that makes a difference), as far as I can tell its got a standard VW system all the way through. The joint between parts of the exhaust approximately under the rear passenger footwell has come loose as the clamp is buggered. Any idea how much an Exhaust place might charge to do this? Otherwise, what size clamp do I need? Thanks! jc
  13. A new development, the coil that I swapped in to replace the possibly faulty one was actually an 8v GTI coil. Does anyone know if the VR6 and 8v GTI coils are the same. I seem to remember the last 3 or 4 chars of the part number were the same but the middle group of chars were different.... anyone any ideas? thanks!
  14. Hey, mine's a very early VR6 Golf. I've only had it about a month and just occasionally when I put my foot down (only 'around town' rather than motorway driving) the revs jump about wildly, nothing seems to clear it apart from sticking the clutch in and giving it some revs a few times. Its never stalled as a result or the spluttering but its caught me out a couple of times pulling away from lights or attempting to accelerate from a steady speed, and seems to be getting worse. My brother's also got a VR and suggested it would be the coil, he had a known good spare, so I swapped it out a week o
