Who saw top gear last night? Was funny - "Man love rules ok"..excellent stuff. Can't believe (well maybe I can as they all voted Bush) how empty their heads are out there to be upset by just a bit of paint on a car.

I had vw service my car when I first got it at 69k miles - asked them to give it a full service. That was a year and a half ago and it cost £250. However they were rubbish and neglected to tighten up every single spark plug. I now take it to a specialist: The Phirm and they are far far more experienced and far cheaper. If I was to buy a car now I would much prefer it was serviced at a specialist rather than a main dealer after the experience I had. My gf and other people I know have also had bad service from our local main dealer.

Don't have experience with Stictly Dubs. Haven't heard much about them although I have heard of them. If it turns out to be your chains or if your car needs anything big being done to it I would strongly recommend taking it to Stealth or The Phirm. I took my car to a so called vw specialist and they conned me - turned out they never in fact did my chains only replaced the tensioners! So be careful where you go. What I do know is Stealth and The Phirm are the most highly recommended on here. The phirm do all the cars for the international VW Performance magazine. Very friendly down there and

Can you be done for speeding by a van marked with "Camera Partnership"?
matth76 replied to matth76's topic in General Chat
Someone also told me if she does receive an NIP to ask them for the calibration certificate for the camera. And if they can't produce it then they can't do anything. As apparently they are supposed to calibrate them once a year. Anyone heard of this? -

I thought now they don't need to pull you over - they just send a letter through the post? Cheers for your help. I just found out from the sussex speed camera website that it was a speed camera. Oh well its done now. Just not sure if she was doing over 35 or not when the camera will have caught her. I know they have quite a long range. All of the speed camera detectors on the market will pick up mobile cameras but only after it is too late as the mobile camera range is so large. Someone told me spraying a certain hair spray partially on one of the letters or numbers on your number plates bloc -
I don't want to make you feel more worried but my car had to have it's chains done at around 74k miles. However sometimes the chains can last well over 100k miles. However it is more likely to be noisy tappets in this cold weather. As said above try to get to The Phirm or Stealth. Both are well worth a couple hour's drive purely because they are the best in the country for the vr6 - but half the price and far far more experienced than a main dealer. Everyone on this site will recommend these two companies. I use The Phirm. Its quite normal in this cold weather for your car to be more tappet

Definitely look else where. You should be able to pick up one of the same age without the damage to the bodywork for that price. If a car has been well looked after it shouldnt have damage like that left untreated. If the chains haven't been done you are looking at around £800 to get them done - the tensioners could well be on their last thread. If you can wait a bit longer, for around £2.5k you will get a far lower mileage newer example that has been well looked after without any dents at all. Plus OBD2's have better engine management and on average 10bhp more. One thing to do is to ask a

Does it have a full service history? Unfortunately you won't get anything for your mods. As above definitely sell the wheels separately you will get far far more that way but virtually nothing extra if sold on the car. I'd estimate around the £2k mark at most as is. Looks well looked after. Pity you're selling it mate. Mpg shouldn't be too bad compared to most 2ltr cars these days. I average 32mpg and I like to push it hard at weekends.

As above, can you be done for speeding by a van marked with "Camera Partnership"? My gf was driving about 35 in a 30 and in the distance we saw an orange van and a guy in front of it with a tripod and a small mobile camera looking device on it. There was also the usual camera symbol on the van, and on the side of the van it said "Camera Partnership", not "Police". My question is how do you know if they are checking tax discs or checking speed? My gf's a bit worried - they always catch the safer slower drivers! Thanks for any help. Cheers.

Later OBD2's run on average 10bhp more than the earlier OBD1's. Every car is different even from the factory. Just life. Again it is how well looked after it is - especially if its allowed to properly warm up to 88-90deg or 15 mins from cold before taking it over 3 - 3.5k revs. Regular servicing etc every 10k miles.
-
No you wont damage the car with those temps. Turboed vr6's run on average 120 degrees all day long, still within safe limits. I agree 106 or 110 is pretty high for just normal driving. Although if it has been left doing nothing for a year that may be why. First thing I would do is get an oil change and full service if you haven't already. The water temp will directly affect the oil temp. The higher the water temp the higher the overall engine temp and oil temp. The water acts as a 'cooler'. Worth checking the radiator properly and make sure the water pump and thermostat are working 100%. I

The Phirm mate or Stealth should help if you can get to either or at least give you very good advice over the phone. Could be the tappets not having filled properly with oil but that shouldn't affect your performance - only make it really noisy.

I've heard that too which is what made the reliability reviews quite a surprise. Although on speaking to specialists as to why the engine failures happen is because they often end up in the hands of inexperienced people who wind up the boost thinking they get more power - they certainly do but with very low reliability and an engine failure. Or people have not had their Jap import properly mapped correctly or even mapped at all!! I know of quite a few people who have imported a WRX not realising they are set to run on Jap high octane fuel or think it just ok to use a bit of octane booster. To -
Mines lowered on a Gmax 35 mm kit but in reality it's at least 40mm and that's plenty low enough - it looks perfect, not too low to be impracticle but looks nice, low and mean esp with the deep front spoiler - looks how it should have done out of the factory. The front spoiler does occasionally catch on speed bumps or going down a ramp. I always park in spaces backwords first to avoid hitting the curb. More importantly it drastically improves the cornering and handling. Uses gas dampers which are more lasting than oil based dampers. The Phirm really rate them. I can't fault them.

What caused your impreza engine to blow up? They get one of the highest reliability ratings (even above Mercs etc) - was the boost setting or fuelling wrong causing detting? -

What was initially wrong with your car? Was it making really lower power - how did you find out you needed your head welding!!? Sounds nasty. Def let us know how it drives now? Should be a lot smoother hopefully. What kind of power increase are you expecting with a gas flowed head? Sounds good mate. I know how you feel about spending a lot of money on your vr ... I had to spend out loads rectifying a problem caused by choosing the wrong garage! Good luck mate. -
Hi what could cause this? My revs were above 3k revs when this happened. I then test drove my car again 5 mins later and it was fine in first gear, and I gave it full throttle to 5k revs and all was fine (slight vibration noise above 4k revs but that is normal in first gear). My clutch is fine (its a year old and bites well). It wasn't wheel spin. Has anyone else experienced this before? I don't normally rev it high in first gear as I have never needed to as its over so quick! I haven't noticed this before. Cheers for any help. Matt

The 'noise at 2k' is the chains...

What's the name of the garage Gibs? If it's good will be useful to know about it. -

Yes it can. The Phirm would check this for free mate (its a 5 min job) but would put your mind at rest and believe me they and Stealth are the best in the UK when it comes to the vr lump. Take your car to someone recommended on here who you can trust as it is a big job (and there are a few dodgy companies out there..I know!) and if done incorrectly will cause you to pay out a LOT more in the long run to get the problems fixed. Worth mentioning that The Phirm do all the cars for VW Performance magazine - quite funny when you go down to their garage and occasionally see a nice motor you saw in -
The GTR is in a different league, twin turbo, bigger 2.6l lump, 320bhp standard, 4 wd and 4ws, far better handling set up, better interior, bigger brakes. Very good if you want massive power, however the smaller brother gts-t is also a very nice car and often overlooked in the jap tuning world. But it is becoming a lot more common now. As its a turbo it does have very good tuning potential. As standard it has 250bhp and has very similar performance (0-60 in 6.5 - 7.0) to a lightly tuned vr6, mainly as its a fair bit heavier - different story if you tune it though. One thing it does have is

I looked into this once. Not many people have them but the few that do have only said good things about them. -
As its american I would say no its not suitable for a rhd car, without serious modification.

Is this normal cold weather "starter" problems...?
matth76 replied to matth76's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Cheers for your replies guys. I was leaning towards it being the battery. It was slightly better today as its a bit warmer. Not really worried about it just didn't want to get stranded one day. Hows your search for a new car going Steve? Weren't you looking for a 200sx? Any luck?
