    Dilemma....

Evening all, I'm getting married next April & for our honeymoon we're going to do a 7 day driving tour round Europe My dilemma is that the future Mrs has said we can take the VR6 The problem is.... It's a bloody auto & driving round Europe, down as far as Italy, through the mountains requires three pedals & a proper gearbox!..... So do I sell the current one & buy a manual one or do I convert to manual? Bearing in mind that I have no free time & a 6month old daughter. HELP! Cheers Jamie

Sounds like a good formula that. Having a second car (daily) when our VR's are now knocking on abit is a win win situation. When you drive the daily, the VR feels like it's faster than the speed of light, but also takes out the stress fixing it up and not worrying about it having a flap and breaking down but more importantly your not spanking your money on petrol that could be put to better use fixing it up Club Chairman

    Dilemma....

Congratulations on the pending marriage, I think the decision will depend on a few factors 1) time / money as you previously mentioned 2) is it worth buying another one if you have done a lot of work to yours? What I'm trying to say is that you could buy one and could have mechanical issues on your honeymoon with an "unknown" car, you'd never hear the last of it from the other half lol If the rest of your car is in good condition and you have a good base, converting to manual will make it more desirable. It has been done a few times, should be threads covering it on here I don't think

  7. Just to clear this up for anyone else wondering about errors and ECUs and coolant sensors. It turns out that my alternator failed the same day that I replaced the sensor, and the high idle seemed to be as a result of this. The alternator was replaced this afternoon and now the car idles at about 750-800 ish again, and feels good. Will get vag-com on it anyhow when I find a windows laptop or a reader turns up, but for now, problem solved!

    Are you a lurker?

Wow Dude you must keep the syncro (It's VR6OC law ) ... rare as rocking horses mate... If you can save it pop on www.petrolicious.com/ and get yourself a video... OEM+ in my opinion is the way forwards there... Keep us up to date and do a build thread... we will help out with contacts and support where ever we can. Good luck and we're all looking forwards to the photos..trust us PS where is western MD? (Excuse my ignorance ). If you are USA then there surely cannot be many at all over that side of the pond..?????

  12. Didn't think it'd be this bad! I thought, bit of surface rust, clean it up treat it underseal it or whatever.........wrong!! But I suppose if you're going to do something you got to do it properly! Nearly there with the rust now so I can start on the rest of the bodywork, which is good because I hate doing rust! My Black Magic VR6

I will highly recommend the halfords advanced cover if covering your car up and it lives outside, the 3 strong straps and buckles laughed in the face of the wind and rain, the Clarke one lasted ok in summer but did get a tear in it where the elasticated edge was stitched on in a summer breeze. The halfords one also feels softer inside. To summarise, I still wish I just had a garage.

  14. If you are going that route lift it out with the front off is the easiest, the entire front end comes off in 6 bolts, the worst part is wrangling the gearbox out in situ, I would take the whole lot out still together. Dunno about 7 hours I did headgasket, full chains and clutch and ended up taking about 2 weeks lol, did get quite sidetracked with anything I decided needed doing on the way though, and had to remove and reinstall the gearbox twice though (the worst job of it all with the block still in the car!) as my flywheel was no longer flat so with the new clutch was shaking like a shittin

I have a 1.0 corsa to run about in so the golf isn't my daily driver. Would like to try it one of the reasons I took on a project was to push my limits as a mechanic and also learn new skills. That's why I want to paint it myself and I have a painter to show me and keep me on track.

    My hot chilli mk3 build

Liking the sound of your plans, already looks good and will go like a rocket with a turbo on it. Good luck with the Peugeot might be worth checking the clutch cable on it.I have had a few customers complain of clutch going and turned out to be the cable on peugeots as the teeth inside the adjuster wear down over time and the cable doesn't pull the arm all the way back on the box.

Like I say it only took that length of time because of the shifts we work and the weather and having to spend time with our families lol. I've went on to put full black colour concept leather in it, a full custom magnaflow stainless exhaust and an induction kit and coilovers on. The future plans are upgrade my brakes get another bare engine strip it and rebuild it ready for a turbo and turn the car to a VRT ;D Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk

  19. Got the passenger side all welded up this week,it seemed pretty solid when I stripped off the wing and side skirt.....I was wrong the bit of surface scabs had started going all the way through, thanks to all of the crap that had collected behind the splash guard after 17 years off driving! This is what I found after cleaning off the paint; Cut a bit of sill out to have a look inside and found this; Ended up cutting a lump of inner sill out and putting some thicker plate in there to strengthen the jacking point but forgot to take photos! Then just used the front section of the pattern sill as t

So far I have fitted a new exhaust back box and centre pipe, a k+n induction kit and wing is ready to go on. Also fitted a set of coilovers last weekend. They are cheap eBay ones for now but come with 2 year warranty so will do for now. Only pic I have after the suspension change. Next up is replace the heater matrix, refurb my new alloys in anthracite, paint all exterior trims in vw gloss black pearl. Then prep the whole car for paint after New Years.

    drive shafts

There is a circlip on the shaft that you need to take off then just chap it off with a hammer mate but make sure you remember what way the bearing cage goes and how the bearings fit in as its a knightmare to put back together

    K-Seal works

Hi, just an update for you. After doing the head gasket and still finding a small leak I chucked in a bottle of K-Seal to the coolant. Does what it says on side ot' tin. Tenner well spent.
