  1. New thermostat, housing and seals. Sounds like the thermostat is stuck shut. Start with that and see if you have any running issues afterwards. You can't condemn a head gasket because of an overheating issue. If they have tested for oil and water, your oil cooler may be at fault, not necessarily the head gasket. Don't keep cooking the engine and cooling it as it can warp the head, and remember, even if it was the gasket, it's a VR and well worth repairing.
  2. I think you have done a top job with your filler work, for the sake of the paint finish i would have taken the gate to the bodyshop and got them to prep and paint it. Foreignor, i reckon 30 notes plus materials. I've been toying with the idea of smoothing all the recess's on the car when i respray it, just trying to figure out the costs.
  3. Rings, mains, big ends, crank grind, crank seals, bore hone, valve stem seals, chains. Thats a good start. should be able to get oem for 550 ish. No more oil use after that though!
  4. Sounds like water pump bearings. Take the belt back off and check for play.
  5. We are building a track car for this, would it be frowned upon if our car were to be emblazoned with sponsorship decals?
  6. You can get repair kits off vw for individual connectors, you get the pins and a length of wire specific to what you need, your lambda probe VAG reference is G39 and connector is T4a if your ordering bits.
  7. Hi mate, just to confirm, connector T4a, the yellow wire pin 3, connects to the ecu, as does the white wire pin 4. The other two, which are marked as Brown, and red/white are for the heater within the oxygen sensor.
  8. Tighten the selector first dude, try that.
  9. Sounds like a selector issue to me. Engine mounts ok? Might be worth adjusting the selector.
  10. Hi mate, yes i did and the OS we use doesn't seem to have any wiring diagrams for engine ECU etc. I'm afraid a bentley manal may be the only place to find it. I'm trying to get hold of one myself. Will try again thursday though, i may have missed it.
  11. Ring the bastards out, over tightening a taper roller bearing can cause a serious problem. You know what they have done, your an informed customer, hit them with it and demand all damaged parts replaced at their cost at the bare minimum.
  12. Is it pin 3 or pin 2 on the damaged connector? Havn't got a wiring diagram to hand but could be a signal wire to the ecu. I'l check in work tomorrow.
  13. with your multimeter. Positive to battery positive and neg to your earth points. its the earth cable your testing so make sure to contact the cable at these points. Battery, bulk head/strut tower, and gearbox are your points for battery neg lead. if you have a voltage drop, clean the contacts up.
  14. So the wheel rubs on the strut on turns, which is probably why the steering is pushed back. If your trying to keep it cheap, get a full side from the scrappy. What is the setback like?
  15. I would get a second opinion off a bodyshop mechanic, for the wheel to be moving out of your hands at speed, something will be bent, and visibly so. If it was an insurance job i would hit it for a full side, plus rack.
  16. Take your back seats out just before the race.
  17. The plans are already taking shape. Just hope it's a realistic target. Got a car begging to be tracked up. Gonna throw the cash at her now, and get it sorted. Can't bleedin wait.
  18. I'm gonna put the missus and i down for this. It sounds like it would be mint. It'll give me the kick up the arse i need, and make this track car that's been doing the rounds in my head. Plus i can take the interior out of it in preperation. I just woke up the wife and she said yes.
  19. In my opinion the only way is up. I will never own a car with less than six pots. I want a V8 next. Buy an M5 V8, then i'll want a V10.
  20. Cheers gents. So a sell on is highly feesable, i'l just lob it on the bay of e and see how i get on.
  21. I replaced a turbo the other day on a golf tdi 170. It was a suspected intermitant fault, and my questions to anyone in the know are: Can the turbo's be reconditioned? Do they have any sort of resale value in either screwed or recon condition? Are they a universal union to an exhaust manifold and thus are interchangable? Bottom line, can i recon it and fit it to my VR? If i can't, can i flog it? Thank you
