  1. Hi mate, Could be your coloumn bushes or the pin in the pedal box.
  2. I'd replace them and do the bearings at the same time. If i really had to get them out i'd drill them progressively, heat them and use an easy out. Clean all threads before putting your wheel back on. I've got studs if you need them.
  3. If it helps, the cooling system on the 2.8 holds roughly 10 litres. The G12 should give you a temp guide to what you should put in. I put about 25% in mine, but i always increase it in the winter.
  4. I'd say don't do it. I can imagine torn hubs and wheels over taking the car. I wouldn't mess about with anything designed to be tough and durable.
  5. I agree with Pete. Plug her in. It will most likely be a sensor. Same thing happened on mine. IMO, being able to stand on the brakes in the wet is peace of mind when there's little people in the car.
  6. Thanks very much richievr. So the factory code is the one to go off if i'm going second hand route, which i certainly am, as i don't want any sort of exchange going on so i can work on the damaged one. ta very much.
  7. I'm looking for a used box at the mo and i know the factory code is CCM, only thing is a lot of people prefer part numbers on ebay etc, and i dont know whats what. I've heard 02a and 02j mentioned, can anyone help me, as i have seen several decent boxes go on ebay because the seller doesn't know the code!! Thanks
  8. A big pair of vice's and a big gorrilla on the end of em should do it. Tricky job though. I wouldn't want that job coming to me!! Good luck
  9. Cheers tony, i will pm my add to you. It would be a massive help to know what i'm doing before i take it apart.
  10. I'm deep in it. A 94' mk3 VR, 125k, worth 1200?? She is in desperate need of that much money to be spent on her it's a total loss. Luckily i can do the work myself, but it is still an un-economical repair, and have been told to ditch it on several occasions. I'm not going to though, because i love the sound of her with just a filter, kind of like an angry lion?? Anyway, from a brief estimate, she needs: For those with transmission knowledge, the diff pin housing, shaft, and locking pin are worn and has excessive backlash on the drive flanges, causing huge amounts of torque steer, not good.
  11. Just want to say thank you to all, made me feel a bit better that i aint got any sticky valves etc.
  12. I did mine and found i had trouble with the rear mounting. I'l be taking it out again soon, and will release the steering link off the rack and drop the frame down. The box will practically fall out this way, although the PAS fluid may also have to be replaced this way.
  13. She is popping. No mis-fire, maybe a bit of an uneven idle. Love the sound of it, but got me thinking if there is a problem. All she has fitted is an air filter. OBD1. Anyone have this issue? Thank you
  14. What a great thread!! 155 in a 850i v12
  15. sound like lwr arm bushes. Drifting on acceleration or braking, and feels like your trying to steer a hover craft. A good way to check is to get the wheel stud wrench and try tighten the wheel nuts on the o/s and slacken on the n/s. The wheel will shift on the back bush. Good luck
  16. I did mine myself. It's a peace of piss, just let the rack pinion bolt go and drop the frame, otherwise you struggle with the rear mount. I would estimate at no more than 3 hrs labour. I got a non-gen clutch for 90 notes. Also when i thought i had a bit of diff rumble, which leads to the case exploding, i priced a new ccm box at 1200 quid. good luck
  17. What a bloody mess mate, i'm gutted for ya. I hope you don't get done for the box. Don't take it to them again, any decent mechanic can do the box on the golf. Good Luck
  18. Do you definately think its the UJ? or did you mean c.v?? c.v's are servicable items, the UJ detatches from the base of the column, and the rack from the inside of the car. no need for engine out!
  19. The gearbox selectors have this shite plastic bracket thingy, that holds the top cable and they can snap and rotate a bit (held on by the bolt) until eventually it comes of completely and you cant get any gears. Definately worth a look, i snapped mine by accident when i took the box out, so i bodged it up and its difficult to get all gears. £15 for a new one i think.
  20. I took the box out today. I can see why people charge 500+ for any work that needs it doing. I ordered a clutch today, which is coming on wednesday, but i need to do the chains, and the guy supplying the clutch can't supply the chain kit. Money is a bit tight, and i'm getting the clutch on tick, but because my good friend can't get the chains, i got to pay now... bugger. Does anyone know the price of the timing chain kit?? Thanks
  21. The bugger got me. I changed bloody everything to get rid of the noise, lwr arm, ball joint, bearing, top mnt. Thought i'd try them first, but the nightmare came true. 124k on the clock, so not sure if it's had one before, although i was told it's a common fault. Tbh i crapped myself, even though i'm a mechy, it's a bit of a grim situation. Anyway after a nightmare or two, i found a guy in buckely, north wales, that will recon it for £30 p/h if i whip the box out and deliver it to him. He quoted £500 plus for remove and refit, and VW quoted £1200 new!! I'm probably looking at £300 i recko
  22. I tore the arse out of an A3 on friday. and to be truthfull, i didn't think it was anything special. The only thing i would go for is the interior. I'd go R32.
