  1. No havnt had it hooked up to anything yet. Im a bit scared to see what other fault codes it will find to be honest!
  2. Hi guys, An intermittent problem I had with the VR is now getting worse! If the car has been driven quite a bit throughout the day and the engine is warm then it has problems starting up. It will fire, then the revs will drop and it will stall. Had a major issue with it today. Started fine this morning and drove to work fine, it was sat in the car park for 8 hours and when i went to leave, it cut out twice when trying to drive away. And again this evening, I was stuck in a car wash que for about 15-20 mins - on the way home which is 1/4 of a mile away, it cut out 4 times. It cut out when I
  3. Lol, yeah doesnt make much sense. It's not for definite yet anyway, ive never driven an old beetle so I might hate it! Thanks for the replies.
  4. Hi all, Looking to sell the VR in the near future so I can save up and buy myself a restored beetle that Ive wanted for ages!! But there's a couple of small issues I want to get sorted before I put the old girl up for sale. First thing - I had a new heater matrix fitted not long ago and ever since Ive been getting a a constant warm air feed through the heater, even with the dial turned to cold. I really, REALLY dont want to have to have the dash off again - is it a simple case of pulling the heater control cluster out and seeing if something is stuck?? Secondly - My speedometer is sticking, i
  5. Got an intermittent problem with the VR, and ive noticed it only does it if I've been out on a couple of runs and the engine is warm. When I turn the car over, the revs drop and splutter and it will stall. I have to keep my foot on the accelerator upto about 1500 rpm for a good 10 seconds, and then it's completely fine! As I say, it only does it sometimes and only if the car has been used frequentley throughout the day. It will start up first thing on a cold, icy morning no problem. Would giving the MAF sensor a good clean help maybe?
  6. Ok thanks for the reply. I can always just go back and swap the oil, i havnt opened the bottle yet! But for future reference, when I do the full oil change - will fully synthetic be ok or should I stick to semi?
  7. The VR needs an oil top up so I got some 5W/40 the other day but realised when I got home I had picked up the fully synthetic 8-) Would this be ok to use for now until I do an engine flush and full oil change in a few weeks? Its got semi synthetic at the moment but as I say its getting low. Some people say that fully synthetic is too thin and can cause leaks, but ive heard its better in the winter months because it warms up alot quicker??
  8. I will have a look, its definitley coming from the middle/front end of the car aswell.
  9. I know I probably need to jack the car up for this one but anyway...the other week I noticed a sudden smell whilst driving that lasted about a minute! It was a distinct smell of burning plastic. Thought it was strange but seeing as the car was driving fine, no warning lights etc I put it down to an odd one-off. Today I drove about 6 miles into town and noticed again the same smell when I stepped out of the car. Driving back I opened up all of the air vents and put the fan on full to see if the smell was coming from the engine bay into the car, which it wasnt. Its definitley an external smell!
  10. I really want a set of nice black steels for the VR as Im going for a sort of ratty look. Found a perfect 16" set from a VW Transporter T5, but Im concerned about the weight of them and the type of tyre I can fit?? Ive read somewhere that steelies can weigh an extra 8lb extra per wheel which when in motion, affects acceleration and breaking quite alot! What do you guys think? :S
  11. Im sure this is a very stupid question, and probably not in the right section of the forum either BUT, can I use a standard mk3 air filter box on the VR? ive got a K&N induction kit on there at the moment, but its fairly old and just a bit sh*t really so I wanted to go back to a normal panel filter. All of the second hand"vr6" air boxes ive seen are at least £35-50 which seems a bit much just for a bit of flippin plastic. Ive been told I should expect better fuel consumption and generally better overall performance with a panel filter aswell??
  12. Ok thanks. Ive also noticed now that there is a slight airy noise coming from the engine bay, which I can notice shifting in lower gears - sounds almost like a super charger whistle! Getting worried now so its going into a garage next week. Is there any easy way of checking the timing chains for wear??
  13. Right, got an intermittent problem with the VR. Noticed the other night when I drove to mates house, 10 miles away (didnt let it warm up enough admittedly) - when I pulled up there was a distinct ticking noise coming from the drivers side, by the belt tensioner...i think? It was a fairly loud solid ticking noise which got faster when I put my foot on the accelerator. I didnt notice the ticking when I first started the car and got driving, its like it started mid journey. Over the course of the week, its only made that ticking noise once since that drive. I will try and get a video of it next t
  14. Been thinking of doing a sticker bomb somewhere on the VR, to go in line with the shabby rat look it's accidentally obtaining! Found this on ebay which i HAD to get
