  1. Avoid Howard Basford's in Stockport they did more damage than they did repairs when mine was in. I've some friends with body modded VW's which were done well, I'll ask next time I see them but it's not often I'm afraid.

  3. Had this Wednesday off and having done lots on the house recently I thought the VR was overdue some attention. Managed to spend a few hours on it on a chilly but sunny day. In this time I - washed, dried, clayed where needed (tar/sap) masked and applied 1 to 2 "coats" using a cheap buffer of Menzerna One Step Acrylic Jacket.   4. lol - no answers, it's either stupidly easy or so difficult nobody talks about it. Looking like I might be able to take next week off so I should be able to spend some time applying some TLC.
  5. I've noticed I've got bits of rust developing on the lowest part of both front wings, the bit just above the sills. I want to remove the front wings to get at the back and treat it properly but haven't looked what's involved yet. Any tips on what's required to remove the wings and how long it takes? I guess most of it comes down to how easy the bumper comes off on the mk3 golf, which I've never done. Any advice to make it easier greatly appreciated!
  6. Polish preferences aside - supurb finish! Looks really good, you must be pleased.
  7. Yes, the AutoGlym SRP isn't really a polish as such - it's a cleaner polish so part very, very mild polish but mostly last stage product like the Megs tech wax. (Yes it's always been mis-leading) If you want a polish stage, take it back and swap it for a normal polish (even a mild one) then put the tech wax on after that.
  8. Quick update from me - I mentioned I'd heard good things about Menzerna's One step acrylic jacket and it's all true! I got some for Christmas and it really is the best product I've tried so far, long lasting (it's been on a couple of months now with no deteriation). It gives a light polish to bring up the shine and seals well. I'd say that dirt has about 50% less ability to stick to it than anything else I've tried so far, so much so that I just hosed my car last weekend and it almost looked like I'd washed it!   9. Yes, clay is great stuff - it's like finding the missing link! Quick Clay is virtually non-abrasive so easy to use - other range from mild to quite strong so start with something like the Quick Clay to avoid damage. It's also remarkably like a product from Bostick called White Tack which is also a polybutyl clay... hmm, wonder who manufactures the Quick Clay? Anyway, whatever you use, keep it lubed with a quick detailing spray, clay lube or nice soapy car shampoo and remove all that grime embedded in the paint.

  11. Yeah, I'm a big fan of clay since the first time I used it. Had no problems at all and wouldn't do without it now. If you're unsure get a non abrasive type and use lube or soapy shampoo (which I use) to keep it slipping. The non abraisives will still grab most of the embedded rubbish and crap sitting "glued" to the surface and that's mostly what you want it for.

  13. Lol, yeah with the detailers the people that do care are usually pretty passionate to put it mildly. I never reaaallly noticed swirls until I read about them and "proper" methods of cleaning and looking after your paint - then it makes you think. I'm pretty realistic though I'm not after perfection, I want my daily driver nice and shiny and would rather have some minor swirling and keep the clearcoat thicker for extra protection.   14. Heh. I've seen the local valeters doing cars in the company car park or from the windows I can see another company. The cars all look nice and clean but - ouch, sponges, single buckets - it's a regular old swirl fest. Makes me cringe tbh. There's some expensive kit round where I work and I see the valeters regularly washing scratches into a Porsche GT3. Same reason I tend to do my own mechanicals, most people don't care for other peoples property that much. You do find some dedicated folks doing a good job here and there though...
  15. I think stockers is talking about the difference between a rotary polisher and an orbital. The porter cable is an orbital (and a very fine one too) and the rotary's tend to be makita, bosch etc - these will tear through your paint with one slip for the unwary. Some but not all of the cheapies are orbital, some are rotary's but not like the power of the pro tools. For the orbital's, consider moving your hand in small circles round about a 2" throw (like hand polishing) then also spin it around (ouch if it's your hand!) that's the sort of action that's good for poweful but reasonably gentle pol
  16. Screwfix do a Direct Power one, which is an orbital model around £15-20. It's quite well built. It's not a porter cable but I wanted something to take the workload out of applying/buffing with a polish. I can't do 3000 rpm for more than about 2 seconds. If that's all you want it for, it will enable you to cover your large surfaces more evenly than by hand in a shorter period of time. I may mod mine to fit a foam pad carrier at some point too.

  18. I had the same dilemma before I bought my VR. I had up to about 12k to spend (theoretically) but it came down to choosing between a mk4 turbo or 4motion and a mk3 VR (I wanted a highline in this case). I drove quite a few, but found the mk4's too heavy feeling and bulky, although I still prefer the looks of the mk4 very slightly. I read a lot or reports on build quality and the mk3 is apparently THE most reliable VW model ever built, so that's what I got. Saved a few £'s too, which came in handy when buying the next house...

  21. Just wanted to wish you all Merry Christmas. I've not been on for a while, I've been flat out at work for the past 6-7 months and our new big bad American owners block all forum access so I can't get on at lunchtime anymore - boo hoo! Santa should be bringing me some Menzerna products and an orbital polisher in a couple of days but the VR's looking pretty dapper as it is. Hopefully I'll make a couple of meets or shows next year as I'm due about 3 years worth of holiday now. I'm off to unplug the phone and switch off my mobile - on call over Christmas??? - my arse!!!!

  23. Yeah, powder coating is good but I can't afford to lose the use of the car while it's being done - I'd have to get the tyres removed etc and the only powder coaters' local can't do that. I checked it out and I could buy a new set of wheels for the same cost! (Obviously, not BBS solitudes from a VW dealer though)
  24. As long as you don't go for much of a drop, that's fine. If you drop it much, you'll need shorter shocks or you'll bottom them out and they'll just break - snapping a weld and ramming a steel shaft up through your inner wing isn't pretty! Not sure on what drop needs shorter shocks though, perhaps the kit has some detail on that?
