Edition38 Club Stand - Sat 1st Sept - Sun 2nd Sept

Cool, that puts my mind at rest too! Some people's cars are soooo nice - mines's just my daily transport that I try to keep looking nice but it's not in the same league. I can relax now and stop scubbing. I'm gonna bite the bullet and go for a really early start to get there in plenty of time Saturday morning. Whether that will actually happen or not.. (e) PS Really looking forward to it and meeting more of the members. -
Well my car isn't up to the level for any showing and shining, but I want it as nice as I can get it. I guess I'll just bring enough to wash and buff it. Stone chips and a few tin worm blesmishes on the bottom mean it's better from a few feet away. Really need to get that sorted tbh.

Just curious what people will take to e38. I've washed and waxed this weekend and done as much as I can but what do people normally take to a show? I'm hoping to just need some quick detailer and microfibre cloths but will take a couple of buckets and shampoo just in case it gets properly dirty travelling down. Mine isn't quite a show car like others I've seen but I'm not missing anything obvious am I?

Air suspension replacing the springs and dampers. Never seen one though.

I've only been to GTi international before and didn't camp there. I assume it's the same sort of show is it? - e.g. stalls and stands and events and stuff or is it really just a big show and shine? Also, I wasn't planning on bringing much stuff other than tent, mat and bag - there are food and things available on site? Should I bring stuff to cook with? -
I wanted a solidly built everyday driver that was easy to live with and didn't stick out like a sore thumb. Wanted it to have some welly too. I'd been through looking at Imprezza's and Evo's and FTO's and MR2 turbo's and even a nearly new CooperS. The first ones lost out too being too "look at me - come steal me!". The FTO didn't have enough torque, the MR2 turbo didn't have enough seats (and caused my bowels to loosen) and the CooperS was sooo disapointingly cheap and plasticky on the inside I wasn't even interested in a test drive. That pretty much left the VR6 as default choice. Other tha

I've had a bit of a look around, the Timax metal one seems to be around 2.5x the price of the Timax ceramic one. I'm not sure it's worth the extra really.

Do you have any pictures Mr Goth? Also what are they made from - 100% cotton?
-
Depends on the condition really, I hadn't thought of looking for a second hand one as unless it's nearly new it can be wasted time fitting it. I guess they last longer than they used to though. Is yours VW or eurocarparts?

I need a new cat, I noticed it's got a small hole in it tonight. Can anybody suggest a decent supplier? I know GSF do one for £98 and I've seen cheaper but don't know about the quality. Thanks Mark

I'll be arriving on Saturday as I have a Karate grading on Friday night I can't miss. Is there a certain time I have to be there for to get to the club area? I'll try and leave pretty early but it's a 2h 30m drive and I don't want to be leaving at 5.30am to get there for 8am if I can avoid it. Plus, once you're in the club area, can you take your car out to visit Tesco's if needed etc? Bit of a show newb tbh -
Possible head gasket leak into the cylinder causing it to be damp inside? Missing cylinder's plug not tight or sealed correctly? Most likely just a faulty new lead though.

Chain tensioner torque setting...

lol, sounds scary -
Upper timing chain tensioner info?
Buzzark replied to Buzzark's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Yes it's the later one as it's a 1997 model. Vast improvement today though after the oil change. Sounded about the same this morning when I started it to drive to work. When I started the engine at work to come home it was much quieter and by the time I'd driven home it's now quieter than it's been since I bought it. If I listen hard when the car is parked, I can just about hear the chains still while in the car but that might improve further yet. Strangely though the whole engine is quieter - it's weird, I never thought there was any noise from the tappets but the virtual silence now had me -
Swap back to the standard induction kit and see if that cures it.

Wow, tumbleweed. It's definately much quieter than it used to be but I'm thinking along the lines of some sort of oil blockage for it's feed. Drained the oil and filled with a synthetic tonight which should flush it a bit due to the higher detergent levels. Not sure I'm ready to run an engine flush through it yet as they're a bit harsh. -

It's 22lbs - just swapped mine, ongoing mini saga that I won't bore you with... -
Heh - chavvy debadged front grills. Wouldn't do to be all the same now would it?! Following on from Tinny's offer I think I'm a bit nearer so I can give you a hand with parts etc.
-
Probably a few people on here breaking mk3's have a look in the for sale forum. I expect they were looking for a towing eye behind one of the grills. Be grateful they didn't sling a chain in one window and out the other .
-
Helen, sad news indeed! Glad you're alright though and the VR is now returned non the worse for it's ordeal. It was bloody noisey to be fair and it sounds like the tensioner had seized and caused the belt to drag over it, normal slipping from slackness probably wouldn't do that damage. As you found out, the belt also drives the power steering - they get heavy without don't they!

OK, I've got a highline that's black but I'd have had either. The mulberry is a stunning colour for the paint but I wasn't too taken with the seat colour as it doesn't quite match.

Hi all My 1997 model has had a bit of a rattly upper chain issue since I bought it, although every one I test drove I could hear the chains on. Having listened to a few recently, I've realised it's not normal after all. I recently took the top covers off and it the tensioner really didn't seem to be doing it's job causing the slack side of the chain to flap against the upper guide rail a little. There's no visible wear on the chains, pulley's, guide rail or tensioner surface. After speading to dlea while at tatton I swapped out the upper tensioner bolt this week and it cured the problem comp

Engine starting - warning sign???
Buzzark replied to Karr-Man's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
I'd check the plugs for wear, check/clean the Mass Air Flow sensor and try a different fuel if you're filling up at the same place all the time.
