[moved] Vr6 v 150bhp GTTDI (230lbft of torque!!!!!!)
FishWick replied to gazbrook's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
And what's even more depressing is the 150 TDIs regularly produce 180bhp out of the box! VW were conservative with the figures. I have driven one and initially you think to yourself the VR stands no chance in hell, but despite the tall gearing to counter act the short torque spread, it runs out of revs very quickly. Once you get to 4500rpm, the taps are turned off very abruptly. A chip usually extends the rev range a bit but you can't escape the physics of diesel blocks unfortunately. Currently compression ratios are around 15 to 18:1. Engine manufacturers are looking at reducing the co -
Yep, the V280 has a VR6 in it. I think the Galaxy, Sharan and Vito get a detuned (mild cams) version of the 2.8. Low hp, around 155 I think, but high torque for load lugging. The VR6 was originally a VW design, Audi wanted to a share of it, they then approached Pierburg to design a variable length manifold and then they all went their separate ways. Audi went with a true V6 (two cylinder heads) as all their cars at the time had longitudanally mounted drivetrains, so had room. VW stuck with the inline V but the accountants dumped the Pierburg manifold. One reason was because the VR was desi

young drivers and shit cars.... whats the crack???
FishWick replied to madmonkee's topic in General Chat
I do a similar thing when people in the inside lane on the motorway speed up as I'm overtaking. I match their speed and box them into the car or truck approaching in their lane ahead! I hate drivers that get all childish like that, can't stand being overtaken by a better car etc. I know an eye for an eye is also immature, but it's feckin satisfying! Especially when you see the driver of the other car getting a clout from his missus for being a berk. FBLOL! -
Yep, I'm going for an AmD remap too, and AmD big bore throttle (bigger than the Corrado 2.9 one that is). Just had a thought. My first drive with the Schrick was OK, but not brilliant and it's been getting better. Could this be due to the ECU re-adapting to the amount of extra air the Schrick is drawing in? It pinked yesterday at 3500 at WOT as Vince said it might, but today....no pinking.... K

I think you need to drive it a couple of times to fully appreciate it. You won't be scrutinising the car so much looking for changes then. Bit like listening to a CD for a few times before it sinks in. I've just been out for a lunch time fix and in this rainy, thick air, the car really motors. The torque is very addictive! The best way to summarise the changes is MK2 Golf GTi 8V. I.e. tractable, torquey and responsive around town with a big slug of torque at 3500rpm, but on a larger scale! And obviously you retain the 4000rpm pick-up too. Best of both worlds. I didn't want to come back t

I felt the same Nickbee. Wasn't immediately impressed, but like you say, urban driving is more relaxed and I find myself entering roundabouts in 4th, thinking I'm still in 3rd. Don't forget, this was the whole point of the Schrick, to move the torque lower down the rev band and it has done exactly what it says on the tin. I think to get the extra 'WOW' you're looking for, you should consider a chip and maybe some Schrick cams. I found the extra speed is deceptive. I now pull up to cars in front a damn site quicker than before, but the acceleration doesn't feel that way. You can't argue

I don't really notice the changeover to be honest. I never give my VR full throttle but there didn't seem to be any interruption in power flow at 4000..... Vince did say that some engines will take to the Schrick better than others, so perhaps your noticable change-over is indicative of a rechip being required? If not already done....

Those leads look like Blue Igniters. Got some on mine. I didn't have a problem with the hose diameters, they seemed OK. The larger of the two outlets on the purge tank was a bit of a squeeze though. One problem I have got is a binding flap in the manifold though....it 'catches' at about the 8 O'clock position. Could I be the first for a warranty replacement? Sigh... Do you get a loud whooshing noise from the manifold at idle? Especially when cold? It sounds like the old Idle valve noise damper, only louder and it's inside the manifold..... not heard a Schrick do that before..... K

I've seen a few in black and they look good. A bit of a Sear Ibiza thing going on there but otherwise all good. About time the Golf got independant rear suspension instead of ancient torsion beams!

Quaiffe replaces the standard planet gears, the VW diff wheel bolts on top of it :-) Yep you get you get the diff wheel from a passat (not sure which one tho, doh!) and I believe a 0.75 comes from a diesel or 4+E Golf gearbox.... Ask Vince at Stealth, he is the gearbox man.... what he doesn't know about them isn't worth knowing.
-
Out of a Passat gearbox. PhatVR6 knows for sure..... Yeah gears from VW are £120 each but the diff is about £200 or thereabouts...

which are the best spark plugs?
FishWick replied to madmonkee's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
NGK BKRE5U or Bosch equivalent, either is good. Plats are a waste of time and money. -
Stealth get my vote for engine builds. Graham there does the engines and he's top notch. A good excuse to use JE pistons and go 3.0 or 3.1 with 11:1 compression ratio, or 9:1 CR if you want to fit a blower too. Rumour has it the R32 crank goes into a 12V quite nicely, so 3.2 isn't out of the question either. Just depends how big your wallet is!

ISV is under the rear plastic cover. You need an 8mm spline key to undo the two bolts securing it.

Best affordable Mod for more torque???
FishWick replied to gazbrook's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Yep, a 3.94 diff from a Passat or a 3.71 diff from a G60 will shorten the ratios nicely, giving more urgent acceleration, but with a reduced top end. Use a 0.75 5th if you want to keep the top end. Standard VR diff is 3.39 which is too tall imo, but is what gives you reasonable economy. You won't increase torque significantly without a schrick or forced induction. A trait of cross flow breathing I'm afraid. -
Rattling noise at 11,000rpm - Chain tensioner?
FishWick replied to a topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Yep, box has to come off to do the tensioner blade but you can replace the guide rail though, so long as you remove the hoist hook from the manifold first. The guide rails tend to split in half. I would replace the upper tensioner with a solid polymer one from a MK4. Part no 021 109 509E and you also need the late tensioning bolt, no 021 109 507B, which is sprung loaded aswell as hydraulic. CAN VR6 WORKS WITHOUT LAMBDA SENSOR AND CAT?
FishWick replied to faigolfgti's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Put a resistor on the lamba probe so that it's running stoich (0.45v) permanently. Disconnect the preheat wire aswell. Think it's the second wire in from the left on the plug. The ECU ignores the lambda on wide open throttle anyway. -
That Twin turbo install is fantastic.... looks really neat. I always thought 1 turbo was better/more efficient? I suppose you get round the lag problem with 2 smaller turbines but it's double the amount of exhaust gases ingested on the induction stroke, meaning more retarding of the ignition. Still, you can't have it all. Roll on twin-scroll turbos....

We've had a result from a corrado.... Standard engine with Schrick....192ft/lb at 3700rpm (40 more than standard, wha hay!!) and 202 bhp. It doesn't pink either, so mapping not essential on this engine but if it was mapped, then maybe more to come? We've also seen another corrado with an AMD remap, Shrek and big bore throttle body, 215bhp with 224 peak torque! Can't wait to get mine on! K [ Edited Thu Apr 29 2004, 08:21PM ]

Oil burning - Newbie needs help
FishWick replied to Geastb's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Hmm not heard of that before but it's feasible and useful to know, cheers! -
Rattling noise at 11,000rpm - Chain tensioner?
FishWick replied to a topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
If you do replace the upper tensioner bolt, I would fill it with oil first and match the piston length with the old one, otherwise the chain will be slack when you start the car and the cam wheel might jump a tooth. -
New engine? I doubt it. All the 4 cylinder VWs can have big ends done with the engine in situ. You just drop the sump, undo the bearing caps, and stick new shells in. I can't see why the VR would be any different. I'd get a second opinion before you get too p'd off about it.

Are they genunine Santa Monicas or copies? I wouldn't expect the VW ones to go that bad so quickly. They've only been around a couple of years! Glad I didn't buy a set now although it is still a lovely looking rim..... Actually, ignore the above, they're completely past it, sell them to me for £50 !

OBD1 ECU relay (109) is £17! OBD2 relay might be more. K
