  1. 1) Yes and no. The ABS itself is not tested, but if the ABS light doesn't come on, or comes on and stays on, then it's an MOT fail. 2) It is possible to remove the ABS system on a Mk3 - it is not tied into the engine management like on the Mk4 & Mk5, however, almost all of the brake lines on the car need to be changed to remove the ABS and the cost of doing this will be more than what it would cost to fix your ABS problem. The problem might just be a wheel sensor or brake position sensor and these are cheap to replace. Get your fault codes read to see whether this is the case. Even in t
  2. The rad fans don't come on until well past 100. This is by design, as the boiling point of water is well over 100 degrees when under pressure. As Pete says, it's worth changing the thermostat first if you're concerned about overheating. When changing mine, I found it easier to take the whole thermostat housing off the engine first, as access to the thermostat cover is too tricky otherwise. Remove the thermostat housing-to-crack pipe adapter first (2 5mm allen bolts) then remove the housing from the cylinder head (3 5mm allen bolts, the top one is shorter and recessed). Removing the battery
  3. I agree with jays - if you're planning to have the block rebored anyway, see if you can stretch to a set of new 2.9 or 3.0 pistons and go for the capacity increase. Then get your crank and flywheel lightened and balanced, get your conrods balanced, then get the rev limiter raised. This lot will give you a decent hike in power and torque and set you up perfectly for supercharging later on!!
  4. Worn followers sound more like a "ticking" noise which is most noticeable at idle, just after a cold start. What you describe sounds more like a worn belt tensioner. It is very common for these to fail at 70-80k mark. They're not expensive and relatively easy to replace.
  5. Supersprint are generally regarded to be the best exhausts for VR6s. Power gains are reasonable and I haven't heard of anyone that has had problems with one. They are also Stealth Racing's recommendation, and these guys know their VRs!! I have a Milltek on mine. The build quality looks excellent and it produces a nice quiet rumble and low revs rising to a satisfying howl when you're caning it. Having said that, it's a fairly quiet system, similar to the Jetex. I did have problems with the fit, though - blowing at the joints and the tailpipes not sitting straight. In the end, I had Stealt
  6. You can't go wrong with the BMC. Leave the cold air feed off and it's plenty noisy enough at full throttle to get heads turning. Fit the cold air feed and you get a more subdued sound and slightly more power. I tried a RamAir kit previously, but didn't like it because it was very noisy at part-throttle and I only wanted the noise when I'm caning it. Also, it didn't come with a heat shield to stop it from sucking in hot air from around the engine. Having one fabricated would have pushed the total cost to more than a BMC. Plus I think Carbon fibre looks cool!! (h)
  7. Fair play for doing something a bit different! Smoothing the sides like that must have taken ages to get right but the end result is stunning! Has anything been done to the engine yet?
  8. ...checks pulse... Nah, still alive! People are probably just out and about enjoying the good weather while it lasts!! LOL And then there's Wimbledon and that little footie tournament in Germany...
  9. For a toad system with total closure, you should have a 4-button remote. Hold down button 4 for 3 seconds after locking to activate the closure. If that doesn't work, try holding buttons 3 and 4 down simultaneously for 3 seconds.
  10. Does it still work with the key? (lock driver's door & hold to close windows, unlock & hold to open windows)
  11. Maybe they've got a huge backlog of cars they need to finish off. It does get well busy this time of year, with the shows and everything!
  12. I think the gold plating looks damn cool. I wonder if he'll go on and gold plate the strut brace, intake pipe, bottles and the 'charger? That would look awesome!!
  13. The head and valves are the same on all VR6s, 2.8 or 2.9, OBD1 or OBD2.
  14. When the first choice team is fully fit, England are as good as anyone else in the World. As it was, they were lucky to get as far as they did. Sven was able to take 4 strikers, so what did he do? take one injured one, one unfit one, one that wasn't up to World Cup standards and one that he had no intention of playing. England effectively had no strike force whatsoever. This left them reliant on their midfielders to score all their goals. The trouble with this is what happens when the midfielders are all tied up on defensive duties? To win the World Cup you need to score goals, and lots of
  15. I'll be there both days this time around. Looking forward to it. I hope the weather is as good as E38 last year (or at this year's Inters, come to think of it!!)
  16. You lucky, lucky, lucky bugger!! I do rate the Eos - lovely car, worthy successor to the Mk3 cab!!! LOL
  17. Bring back VWMADGIRL, that's what I say!.... http://www.girlsnmotors.co.uk/babes/vwmadgirl.html
  18. If it's got Air con, it's an 'ighline, innit? Dontcha know nuffink?
  19. If the bodywork's good on it, it's worth saving. Second hand VR engines are plentiful and cheap these days and the likes of Stealth, The Phirm or Strictly Dubs will be able to fit it in less than a day for reasonable money.
  20. I have a raceland manifold. Mine came with an adapter plate that converts the 3-bolt fitting on the end of the cat to the 2-bolt fitting required by the manifold. Yours should have come with this adapter too. If it's missing, maybe Raceland can provide you with another one.
  21. I've just bought a pair of Highline sill protectors, the black plastic strips with "VR6" on them that go along the bottom of the door openings. Do any of you Highline owners have a pic of these strips on your cars? I just want make sure that I get the positioning right when I fit them. If you don't know how to post pics on the forum, you can email them to me at nick@it-rox.com Any help is greatly appreciated!
  22. Add an induction kit (BMC CDA or Pipercross seem to be the best) for a few more BHP at the top end and better throttle response. Have the ECU remapped once cams, manifold & filter are fitted.
  23. Steer well clear. It's a 10p resistor which will, if anything, make your engine run worse.

The winscreen is bonded on using a special adhesive and tools, so unless you have access to professional windscreen fitting gear it's not a DIY job. I believe VR6Pete has just had his done, so he might be able to give you an idea of costs. I had one done on insurance a couple of years ago, but I only paid the excess.
