  1. I spoke to Vince just last week about this very issue. He's fitting a VF Stage 2 (8PSi) charger to my VR next month, and I already have 268s fitted. Vince said that the charger and 268s will work together with a suitable custom map, but running the 268s on a 'charged VR will sacrifice a lot of low-down torque in favour of a bit more top-end power. Such a setup would only start to pull hard above 4000RPM. For maximum driveability on the road, we determined it was better to put the standard cams back in. The 268s can then be sold off to help towards remapping costs!! If you want maxiumum torq
  2. Check for leaks in the ISV pipework. Cleaning the ISV with carb cleaner may help as well.
  3. I've thought about the Golf Mk4 R32 and the Focus ST.
  4. A 1996 model will have the OBD2 engine with the simplex upper chain.
  5. That's one hell of a transformation in one week!
  6. Yes' date=' you can use the later type (100% plastic) top tensioner rail on an OBD1 engine (duplex chain) no problem. Here is a pic of one that's been done: [img']http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v364/slowslc/NewStyleIn.jpg Apparently, you can use the later type (spring loaded) top tensioner bolt too. You learn something new every day...
  7. The timing chain replacement guide can be read here: http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?107739.0
  8. I've tried both Meguirs 3-stage and Autoglym Super Resin Polish/Extra Gloss Protection. I have had excellent results with the Meguirs stuff, but it was bloody hard work and took ages. Autoglyming is quicker, involves a lot less elbow grease, and the results are still very good.
  9. True say. I can just about see the shadow of the speedo needle. You need them to light up in red somehow...
  10. His ad says "please note my pc is broken so i can only check my mail once a day". Yep, PC definitely knackered. There's a stutter on the "0" key for starters.
  11. The chain itself is as tough as old boots, and cases of them snapping are VERY rare. The problem is the guide rails and tensioners. These are all made out of plastic (plastic riveted to a metal backing in the case of the top tensioner on OBD1 engines). Being plastic, they can crack and come apart once they get worn. When this happens, the chain is no longer tensioned properly and this throws out the valve timing slightly , affecting performance. In some (but not all) cases, the slack chain can "slap" against the side of the chain cover, and it is this which causes the characteristic rattli
  12. The performance of the Mk4 4Motion and mk3 VR6 is VERY close, with the 4Mo being quicker off the line and the VR having the edge in the 50-80mph range.

    Dilemma

I had a VR in Atlas grey. It's actually quite a rare colour and makes a change from the usual black & silver. Atlas grey really suits the mk3 IMO. Definitely go for one with air con. No question. The car above didn't have air con, and I spent three years kicking myself for not getting one with this option. As for heated leather, don't worry too much about it because you can always retro-fit leather seats later on if you want to. They come up on eBay all the time and are really easy to fit. Yeah, Highlines are the creme de la creme, but £2000 will only buy you a tatty or very high mi
  14. Heated leather seats in mine. No aircon unfortunately, but it does have an electric hood!!
  15. The Audi TT V6 has exactly the same engine as the R32, but produces 260BHP. AFAIK, the only difference is the software. AMD do a drive in, drive out remap for the Mk4 R32 which liberates and extra 15BHP & 15lb-ft. http://www.amdtechnik.com/product.details.cfm?ProductID=48&VariantID=72&ReferenceID=213 On the mk4 & mk5, the ECU can actually be remapped via the OBD port on the dash. You don't even have to open the bonnet!!
  16. It's worth noting that some Mk3s made in 1995 had the later-style bodywork (body colour bumpers, oval side repeaters etc) but still had the earlier OBD1 engine. Checking the throttle body type is ALWAYS the best way to tell.
  17. I am looking to buy a VR6 . What should I look out for? Please read our excellent Buyer's Guide in the "Dub Chat" section. It covers common problems to look out for, what the standard & optional equipment is and how to tell a genuine Highline model.
  18. If you can pick up a mk4 airbag second-hand and just buy the steering wheel new, this brings the cost down a lot, as airbags are ridiculously expensive new.
  19. Unfortunately, a Golf mk4 steering wheel will not fit the mk3 steering column, as the spline pattern is different. However, the steering wheel fitted to the 1998-2002 Golf Cabriolet (the version with the mk4 front end, sometimes referred to as the "mk3.5 cabriolet") is identical in appearance to the mk4 GTI steering wheel and will fit straight onto any mk3. The part number for the mk3.5 cabriolet steering wheel is 1E0 419 091 E74. A mk4 GTI airbag unit (3B0 880 201) can be used in conjunction with the mk3.5 cabrio wheel.
  20. The difference in price between the 170bhp V5 and the 204bhp V6 4Motion is not that great. The only advantages of the V5 are the better fuel economy and less chance of it having been caned!
  21. Yep, supercharge an R32 and you've got a seriously quick point-to-point machine, like a Scooby STi or Evo VIII except with better looks, a decent interior and German pedigree. Rest assured that as soon as second-hand prices come down a bit, we'll start to see more modded 32s out there. I'm not sure where VW are at with the R36. Has anything been announced? The one I'm waiting for is the Scirocco coupe (which will be available with the 3.2 engine or MAYBE the 3.6)
