  1. Correct. If you wanted to use a Dastek with an SC, you have to start with a system that is 'over-fueling' first and then use the Dastek to 'lean' the fueling back out - so you could either raise the fuel pressure, or install bigger injectors... Its not that good at adding extra fuel to a system that would already be pushed to its limit. it only has a ~20% tuning window - whereas a charger requires over 50%. Jules
  2. From talking to people with chargers its not just a matter of paying £2k' date=' bolting it on and bingo 250bhp... ask jcorallo [/quote'] The deciding factor as to how much power you get from a charger kit is the chip. I dont think my case is a good example as I'm sure I had the wrong chip for my charger from early on. I originally bought a ZR1 kit, but then upgraded to a ZR2 unit within 6 months - but kept the same chip. I think this is where things started to go wrong as the ZR2 makes more boost for starters. So - long story short - got it re-mapped properly and everybody is happy now!
  3. you know what, since I had my VR re-mapped the other week, the GTD hasnt had a look in and has been in the garage parked up since.... will wait till the VR is nearly on empty then jump back in the diesel! The big VR will be back out for GTI Festival me thinks... cant wait! Jules [ Edited Thu Jul 01 2004, 01:12AM ]
  4. heh! shail - this is what I did! My car was pi$$ing me about so I logged into eBay and got me a 160k mile Golf GTD MkII - for £400 - its ace - I really dont care about it and I can park next to cars in the works car park without worrying about getting the doors banged...! Oh - and it does minimum 55mpg - which is a welcome break! Just have to get used to people jumping in the back seat at traffic lights now.... Jules
  5. the flywheel bolts are stretch bolts and are meant to be replaced, and to be honest, as the clutch is a nightmare to get to again if you ever needed to, I'd replace it all while you are there......
  6. Sorry guys - didnt mean to offend - it was a joke. @Lingy - apologies mate. Jules
  7. do we not use punctuation or capitalisation on this forum anymore how come people come on here writing long rambling sentences with no full stops or commas and drive us all mad with what they write it makes me turn white as i dont know where one sentence finishes and another one starts i dont know where to take a breath and by the end ive forgetton what we were talking about but thats ok as ive passed out as ive tried to read it all in one breath
  8. yes - so around 1995, the double row chain was superceded by a single row set up.
  9. except that the later engines have single row timing chains....
  10. Nick - when I had a go in your GTi for the first time having only ever driven the VR6 before, the first thing I noticed was that it was easy to spin the wheels in 1st gear. The difference is due to the gearing - the GTi has lower ratio gears or final drive to be able to do that. You'd then notice that the VR6 has a much longer first gear so its harder to spin the wheels up, but you can sustain acceleration for much longer, whereas you'd have to change up sooner in the GTi. 11. @faigolfgti - if I remember correctly, you were struggling to get a chip because you have a distributor engine and not a coilpack engine. Are you saying that this chip works with your distributor? Jules
  12. Doesnt he mean sport suspension? kobi?!?
  13. gazbrook - the kit I have (Z-Eng ZR2) was only advertised to make 250bhp...!
  14. The power plot has two lines. The torque plot has two lines. The bottom line in each plot is how the car used to be. The top line in each plot is how the car is now. Vince over-layed the plots from February 2004 over the ones from now. Jules
  15. Yes - Geoff is freelance. He breezes in with his Bosch briefcase full of gadgets, waves his magic wand over your car and leaves! Vince said that Geoff was considering emigration - and that if he did, he did not know what he'd do without him. So get your re-maps while you still can I say! Yes - that trough is caused by the VSR switching point. No Mina - no more money is to be spent on my car now! Jules [ Edited Sat Jun 19 2004, 10:17PM ]
  16. ta! well chuffed! As my car is an OBD1 it has the hot wire MAF. If you put the MAF after the charger as its meant to be, the car is almost undrivable in slow traffic. Part throttle driveabilty is real bad and the car bucks, jerks and hesitates. This is caused by turbulent air coming from the charger impacting on the sensitive hot wire in the MAF. Rotating the MAF helps, but doesnt cure the problem. The other thing is that the charger kit is set up to draw the engine crankcase gases through the charger and thus through the MAF - which ends up killing the MAF with oil spray after not too long -
  17. Another satisfied customer drives away from Stealth Racing this afternoon! My engine config is: 1) ZR2 8psi Supercharger 2) Schrick VSR 3) 250cc injectors 4) Aquamist 1S water injection 5) ARP head studs 6) Denso Iridium IK20 plugs 7) MAF before the charger Here are the dyno plots - the bottom line is the vr6golf.co.uk RR day from Feb 2004 and the top line is todays final result: Power - 270.3bhp Torque - 238 lb ft I think you'll agree thats a great improvement! The actual mapping was done by Geoff from AMD using Vince's rollers. There was lots of swearing, cursing, scratching of heads and
  18. there are two horns, both on the offside (the drivers side). One faces forward in the direction of travel and is just behind the little grill at the front - the other faces to the right and is set back, about 12inches away, and is nearer to the road wheel. Jules
  19. Who was the last person to touch your car in the fuel rail area? have you modified anything or have you had any work done recently? Have you installed an uprated Fuel Pressure Regulator recently? Anyway, there are two lines into the fuel rail - the top one brings pressurised fuel in to the rail, along to the Fuel Pressure Regulator at the other end, which then allows some fuel to return back along the botton pipe. So basically the top pipe is the one thats got the pressure i.e. more likely to leak. If its just the hose thats leaking at the fuel rail, it could just be a case of removing the cla
  20. there are two, and they are not situated next to each other either - I'd say they is about 12inches between my two horns - pfnarr pfnarr. Jules
  21. Short answer is yes - the Iridiums give a much more concentrated spark and reduce the chance of mis-fires. With the standard Bosch FR8LDC plugs installed, I actually noticed a marked difference when I lessened the gap on my plugs (dont forget I have an SC running 8psi max). So for me, I found that spark quality had an effect on my power, but it required something outside of the manufacturers recommended settings (for a normally aspirated VR6) to achieve this. Jules
  22. by the by, Maplins sell Isopropanol Electrical cleaner (its what I use in my water injection! ) - you are supposed to be able to give the electrical item a good drenching in that stuff I think, and then just let it dry off. Never tried it though - I alwayts wondered if it would actually ever dry out if it got into a supposedly sealed part of the MAF electrics? Dont let it get on your skin though - its quite toxic... Jules
  23. Ta kev. I actually ordered a set of Denso's this afternoon, but the sodding spark-plugs.co.uk website was crap and crashed as I entered my online payment. I spoke to a nice lady on the phone from spark-plugs and she cleared everything up and popped them in the post today so they should be here Friday. I'm putting my 24lb/250cc injectors back in at weekend and getting the car re-mapped on the 18th, so I thought I'd stick some decent-ish plugs in while I had the Schrick off, hopefully something that will compliment the charger. Jules
