The lag is created by the turbo spooling up too slowly (a characteristic of big turbos) or the piping from a front mount intercoolers being fairly long. A bigger turbo will have a lot more turbo lag. Smaller turbos spool up quicker and have far less lag. A bigger intercooler helps to reduce your charge temps and can only be a good thing - a bigger intercooler does not affect lag.. the piping does though. The shorter it is the less lag you have. Whats your power band mate...i.e when does the turbo cut in? On average most turbos will cut in around the 3 to 3.5k mark, depending on how big th

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure the maf is good up to a certain limit. When the air flow gets too big the maf is actually a limiting factor as it can't correctly sense the amount of air flow, and should be removed and the car remapped properly without it (obviously along with other necessay supporting mods). Big power Jap cars often tend to be mapped without the maf as it cannot correctly gage the amount of air flow over a certain limit. On lower powered cars where the air flow is a lot lower the maf is required. Vince is one of the best around in the country. I would trust his judgement

Probably the earlier obd1 that has 7.6 and the later obd2 with 7.1. I too have generally heard 7.1 as the quoted figure though. 140ish is the standard top speed.

Agree with all above comments. Very low mileage cars can have a lot more problems with the engine. There have been a few cases of this. When it says it has a full service history has it been done every 12 months and NOT every 10k miles? It should be done which ever comes sooner and in this case every 12 months. Also a main dealer service history isn't always the best thing. A far better full service history would be one done by a specialist. I (and quite a few other members) have had problems with main dealers..plus they quite often use young trainees to do the servicing. I had a full

How much you selling your shrick manifold for and is it for OBD2 or 1?

powerloss/ slight vibation type noise at 4200K revs
matth76 replied to ni-golf's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Could be very slightly blocked injector or spark plugs. Where abouts are you...maybe worth ringing up The Phirm or Stealth and seeing what they say. Take it down to either... both will look at it and diagnose straight away. -
Oil - Normal operating temperature?
matth76 replied to The_0ne's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Might be worth checking your thermostat too mate. Could be slightly faulty. 110 is quite high for an average temp although its not damaging and still within safe limits. Anything over 120 is starting to get high. -
I sometimes find it hard pulling out of 1st and 2nd gears... reverse is always a bit tough but if its very hard could need looking at.

Cheers for all the replies. Makes me feel better. I know I kept calm and cool but I was fuming inside and even worse when I got home...just wanted to kick the **** out of him..kept feeling bad that I didn't but then again it could have been much worse if I had done. Anyway ...(out of curiosity) just had a look at the dvla website and unfortunately I can't do anything without the v5 registration number. However it does pull up the vehicle details correctly based on just the number plate. Anyone know of any car insurance websites that work out your address based on the car number plate you

There will be some play with the gear stick, left or right, maybe about an inch play in 1st, 2nd gears but about 2 inches play to the right in 3rd 4th and 5th. However if you are having a lot more play it could simply be a bush that has come off or broken. Happened to mine when I had a quick shift fitted...very quick to fix. However if you are having trouble with reverse I'd get it looked at by Stealth or The Phirm.

Hi mate. Yes the Milltek is very good. I have one and its perfect. Stealth fitted mine and said it was very good and fitted perfectly. I've got a cat back twin jet Milltek. There are other good makes of exhaust out there too. Jetex are good. I'm sure some other people can recommend others. BMC are a good make of induction kit as it has its own heat shielding and looks good. I've got one and it makes a lovely sound with the exhaust. Both the induction kit and exhaust together (even with a decat or high flow cat, which I have) will only gain you around 5 bhp. You could alternatively spend

I would say it is possible mate.. should def make 210bhp min if your engine's good. speak to Stealth they deal with this all the time with their rr.

I love the Jap cars so has to be an Impreza STI Type RA classic shape (light weight model) closest thing to a rally car...280bhp standard and 1170kgs. 0-60 in 4.6. May get one as my next car...just need a spare £7k!

I've got the GMAX kit on mine. The kit uses gas shocks as opposed to oil based ones so last longer, and have a full three year guarantee. The Phirm fitted mine and they said in 5 years that they have been supplying and fitting them they have not had one single problem..touch wood. This spring/shock kit cost £200 plus fitting so one of the cheapest...but one of the most over looked due to its low cost. Highly rated on here. My car is a daily driver so suits me fine as I don't do track days. Lowers the car approx 40-45 mm...just perfect looks wise and handling is amazing going round corne

If it has the OBD1 throttle body then it sounds as though it is the OBD1 model. All models should have abs... but the original owner may have put the larger disks on as an extra option perhaps. You can easily gain the power of the OBD2 by a remap and enlarged throttle body butterfly. Should see you with 190ish bhp.

just bought vr6 and have some questions.
matth76 replied to shorty_jkt's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Hi mate. Have you checked the steering wheel adjuster lever to the left of the steering wheel? Make sure it is fully tight. It could be that it is slightly loose allowing the steering wheel to move slightly up and down. Re the ABS light it should come on momentarily when you turn the engine on and then go out. Best bet is to check the fuse (test by using one of the other fuses) and if it still doesn't work try a new bulb. If you are in doubt of anything ring The Phirm (in the south) or Stealth Racing (in the midlands)...both of these garages are the best in the UK when it comes to the VR6 -
Hi I know HGP (German tuning company) does an awesome twin turbo kit for left hand drive R32's. However do they do one for the UK right hand drive models or is it not possible? Cheers

Hi Anyone tried this new fuel from Optimax yet? I haven't seen it yet but apparently it is available in some places...its 99 ron so the same as Tesco but been rated as the best. Its worth a try though. Apparently all the Subaru drivers rate the new V Power but don't rate the Tesco 99 stuff (which I currently use) as it has a tendency to retard ignition timing ..apparently. My car loves the Tesco stuff though. If anyone lives in the Worthing or Brighton area let me know if you see a Shell garage with V Power. Cheers Matt

Very good mileage mate. If you did come round to selling it I would advertise at about the same figure you bought it mate... free motoring as they say!
-
As above depends on mileage. Guessing your's is either a 96 or 97 model. Assuming your mileage is under 100k I would say around the £3k mark, maybe a bit more if you have extra options such as air con etc. You'll get more if your mileage is lower though. If your mileage is under 75k advertise it at £3.5k and see what interest you get. Unfortunately the mods won't really add value to the car. Sounds good though. Good luck mate with it. How come you're selling up?

AMD no longer servicing VR6's
matth76 replied to candleman's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Sorry Candleman meant near Stratford, not Stoke... As said above the actual place is Southam. I still highly recommend Stealth. Stealth aren't far from you at all. Well worth the trip. Half an hour or so is nothing when you consider you are taking it to one of the best places for a VR... and a lot cheaper than amd by the sounds of it. £1000 for a service seems very high (!) or did you have a lot of other work done at the same time? -
WIll VR6 jetex exhaust fit GTI 16v?
matth76 replied to mike's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Give Stealth or The Phirm a ring mate. They will tell you straigtht away. I can't see why it wouldn't fit... assuming the cat is in the same place on both models. -
174 is the figure for the earlier OBD1's. All OBD2's, (whether Highlines or standard) come with approx 185-190bhp on average. I believe mid 95 was when the OBD2's came in so your's could be either mate. Makes no difference whether you have a highline or standard model mate... both have same engine. There should be a pic in the guide on this forum that shows the engine bay of an OBD1 and OBD2. That will help you tell the difference straight away.
