Unlike the VGI, the VSR hasn't got tuned length runners, which makes a big difference on an assymetric head. The VGI is more effective, but not as pretty or as maintanence free as the VSR.
-
Yep flat with the head. A peice of 3mm ali sheet will do the same job as the VW tool, which they will sell you if you're friendly with your dealer. I managed to get one, so you should be able to. Make sure the cam lobes are pointing up, and not down. Easy mistake to make.

Only the run-out 12Vs fitted to the MK4 Golf (mostly American market) had single row chains. All MK3s and Corrados have duplex upper chains.

You can use a 0.75 5th from a diesel to regain top end.
-
It's a bad idea. A hot engine needs less fuel, even more so on a hot summer's day, so lying to the ECU will just give you an over rich mixture that will make the engine run like a pig.

Put a 3.6 diff in if sticking with 5 speed, or a 3.94 if going 6 speed. Standard FD is 3.3 VW sell the crown wheels for £100, or Vince has a selection of them in the workshop. If you've got a VGI manny and 268 cams, you can take the rev limit out to 7000rpm and with the 3.6 diff you'll still pull 150 easily. Personally I'd be happy to sacrifice top end for better acceleration. Where the hell can you do 150 in the UK anyway?

It looks a bit like a VW motorsport VSR with some kind of chromed plate over the top of it?
-
Just stick a 90% Nitromethane/10% pure alcohol blend in the tank and you won't need a flux capacitor!

You don't lose any bottom end if you've got a Schrick manifold. Not sure about the 2.8 but on the 2.9 with VGI the cams add even more torque to the 2500-3500 rpm VGI surge and then it just goes nuts from 4000 onwards. Only draw back is the dip in power when the flap opens is slightly more noticable. Speaking of the flap, Vince and I were looking a plot of standard v Schricked and there is actually more torque at 1500 with the standard manifold than the Schrick, by like 10-15lb! So we're thinking 2 flap points would be better. Open up to say 1500, then closed till 4000, then open again.

I thought the throttle body being in circuit with the coolant system was supposedto stop fuel icing? But yeah, that sensor is a dummy one! Anyone removed the heater pipes to the throttle body? Notice any difference? The UK doesn't get cold enough for carb icing anymore, just wondering if it will help the 'cold air' cause or not.

OK, sorry for the delay. I've decided to keep them after all.

157 @ the wheels. Sorry, I should read the post properly, doh! I don't want to be a party pooper but are you really getting 53 hp transmission loss? 157 is closer to 190 at the fly than 210. Please don't take that the wrong way but I'm always sceptical of 'calculated' fly figures. Sorry, that's just me. 157 at the wheels is still a bloody good figure though and at the end of the day, if it feels quick on the road - where it counts - then it *is* quick.

Best way to do it is to take the front subframe bolts out completely and then screw them back in a few turns. Then take the rear subframe bolts out completely. You can now swing the whole subframe back and forth to give the required clearance. Be careful you don't cross thread the rear bolts when you put them back. VERY easy to do and will mean cutting out the old captive nuts and welding in new ones if you cross them. Something I forgot to mention in this thread is the Neuspeed front bar is massive and can sometimes rub on the chassis legs, but it's not big deal as it doesn't transmit an

Absolutely spot on that man. Get it corner weighted. Makes a massive difference. The engine is lower at the side deliberately. It's designed in with the mounts.

PURPOSE OF LOAD REDUTION RELAY AT VR6 FUSE BOX?
FishWick replied to faigolfgti's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
I guess it's there to protect the fusebox from overloading due to switching all of the accessories on at once? i.e. heated seats, air con, fogs, main beams etc etc That was a pure guess btw! -
Be careful, doing that can bend the torque converter blades. And I know because I've written off a few BMW auto boxes doing that. Damn good fun though ;-)
-
Yeah they're Schricks. Brand new. I might sell them, I'm really not sure yet. I want to try a car that has them on + the manifold first to see what it's like. I've heard you get an even bigger wallop at 3500 and then an even bigger dip and then off it goes again! Give me a few days to mull over it. You've got first refusal if I do sell. I'll let them go for £450+carriage.

Got a set of 268s sitting in my cupboard. Not sure if I will fit them or not. Don't want to rock the apple cart as I'm really pleased with just the Shrek and AMD throttle and chip. Jees I'm getting old.
-
Good for you Pete. What were the wheel hp figures? They're the ones I tend to go with as that's where the torque is measured at. Flywheel figures are calculated and the only way to be 100% on that is to remove the engine and put it on a test bench.
-
LOL. Interesting thread! What to choose? Probably 5. I buy cars that please *me*, not other people.
-
LOL! I'm honestly not trying to bankrupt you in doing this, but there is a certain way of doing things that ensures the engine and box hold together when applying the big beans. We're lucky in that the Germans tend to over-engineer things but they still have their limits. The standard drivetrain can handle around 280 brake all day long but if you go over that, you need to take the necessary steps to ensure it all holds together! Quite embarrassing taking a new bird out in the car and it throws a rod cause you skimped on a few vital components. Been there, done that, got the T Shirt :-)

Yep..... standard manifold = /\/\/\/\/\/\/\//\ and polished is _____________. Guess which acts as a better heatsink? VR6s are a very hot running engine, especially the rear bank of 3, so heat dissipation is a primary concern. Corrado and Golf VRs should have come with bonnet vents imo but they're untidy and boy racerish. You also have to be careful with internal polishing to avoid wetspots. Flowing air moves faster over air trapped in factory casting imperfections than it does over a polished surface. I know this all sounds very anal and delving too deeply into volumetric air flow tur

Quaiffe do straight cut dogleg and normal synchro 6 speed conversions. Not cheap tho. Vince is your man for gearboxes. There is no better in the country. Have a look at their site at the Corrado VR turbo project. 405 pounds of twisty stuff going through an 02A Gemini box. Steel CVs, the lot.
-
You can chrome pretty much anything if the preparation is right. The plastic VR6 badges are chromed for instance. I personally don't like polished manifolds and it effectively reduces the heat dissipation qualitys of the casting.
