Lets pray that you've got thin or smallish hands.. Tubby large "shovels" just won't crack it... there ain't a lot of room to play in there.. and be very careful when refitting the radiator not to damage the fins ir tubing as its very tight and barely clears the inlet manifold...

Where is it supposed to sit... (Bar on the dash pod!! Wise guys!! ) I mean at what temp should it sit at... Reason: The Auxiliary water pump went on mine sometime ago, so I purchased a new one, and on fitting spotted that the themostat housing wasn't too clever, renewed all this, new seals and thermostat included, and I'd always known that my rad must have had a pinhole in it due to the loss of coolant... so that all said and done, me guage now sits cooler than before, used to sit dead centre of the guage @ 90 now she tends to sit @ 80 and climbs to just passed the 90 (Tech term here: "Bawhai

Go talk to Steve Creswell, He's the owner of the Company and a good friend when I used to run Audi Ecosse, a very helpful guy very knowledgeable person and comes highly recommended..I don't think you'll go far wrong there his reputation is to much at risk to be a "Dandy Highwayman"... -
Doesn't the greenstuff/ fast road pads give a spongy pedal until heated up though.. I mean if your doing normal in town driving are they not a little slow to respond until heated...just curious as I was going through the same decision to make.. and wasn't to convinced about fast road stuff baring in mind that mine isn't a golf but a Lab (dog) carrier....

To add to that , air filter, any vacuum leaks, tuned cleaned throttle body.. -
Use them alot and never had any problems, make sure that you ask 4 the genuine ones as they do also an aftermarket (made in Outer Mongolia type!) the genuine ones are cheaper than the Stealers by about a fiver or so....

Smoking on overrun i.e when you lift off and coast is usually the valve stem oil seals and not the bottom end, were they replaced at the rebuild???

Guys...Guys... Guys... If I wanted a Sex Forum I 'd a looked for a lesbian one 8) not two guys wif large handbags at dawn !amazed ... Now can we talk about Ciaran's exhaust... I note that you're in Scotland, therefore does that mean you're living up here or do you stay some where else? Reason: RMS are based behind Prestwick Airport and do a Sterling job plus give it a lifetime warranty, provided you still own the car.. They will adapt your exhaust for you and keep it in stainless... plus they are very very good, I've used them twice with no complaints... Oh! and whos lipstick is that rolling -
The head should have been skimmed as a matter of course before refit, how you would prove that Caffyns had done that I don't know, It would be the most logical step then look for a racing gasket (heard of this but I'm not sure of it) seemingly metal and thicker than the norm, and theres yer cheap fix..... !shy

intermittant "splutter" in low revs
28v6r replied to ni-golf's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Sounds rather like dampness amigo , VRs seem prone to it... take the coil pack off and plug leads and dry gently in the oven until fairly warm to touch then spray liberally wif WD40 alternatively coat in Silicone Grease !shy then refit, then you should be OK for a short time.....Try that and see how you go.. -

Fair Play... or have a silencer made up by RMS in stainless.. they will make a small silencer that will suffice... -
Unfortunately not, no, I'd heard, and I don't know how much truth is in it, that the rotten egg smell is a sign that the cat is on its way out i.e US . Dunno though how much truth there is in that... Sawwyyyy !sad

Errr... runs it over as the engine catches and accelerates away????

Again I'd stick wif a second opinion rather than go down the route of changing just because ISO its a weak timing chain going, it sounds a bit iffy to me, not discrediting the Phirm in anyway at all, but the raspy sound could be a small exhast blow at the manifold say like a gasket gone or a vacuum hose split or something like that.. its worth further investigation I'd say before splashing out large wonga on something it may not be, remember your mileage is pretty low for that type of sound to happen and timing chains "very rarely break.." I'm told , they just get more rattily and can jump a

Can you be a bit more specific John, i.e can you display a photo.. just to see if we can help...

Starter motor sounds as though it may have failed or jammed hence the grinding...

Yes it does, however it may be possible to remove the heat shield at the rear only because the gases are cooler at the back, alternatively find out what retains the shield to the car BMW make a large form of washer/retaining ring that may suffice and hold it in place, there needs to be pegs/pins that hang down from the chassis in stalagtite (downward) form, the clip then is forced over the pin and Ayyy Voila a relocated Heat shield.... !lol
