  1. Yes, because your taking the load off the bearing and disengaging the clutch....
  2. Not Necessarily..notice he has specified 3rd and 4th and second a little along with a little grinding, a thrust bearing would do this in all the gears and isn't selective of what gear it prefers, I'd go more for the lay shaft bearings as that tends to manifest itself more in the higher gears due to load being applied to the rear of the box.. as the load off the clutch pushes on the layshaft moving the pressure along the shaft and on to the higher gears/bearings hence the sound..
  3. Check the gearbox for oil, Fab, and replace it if necessary, smell the oil, if it has a sour type smell then it needs replaced !ill . I know that newer VW boxes are supposed to be "Sealed for life" but trust me mate , as an engineer oil does go off! Been there done that and boy! it don't half linger in the nostrils long after its gone ! !dodge ill ....There should be filler plugs and drain plugs (Me Thinks - not sure) just drain and check for filings in the oil etc... Good Luck ...Oh and if successful... have a clothes peg handy!

    At Last!

[blockquote]I went and seen it last night and all I can say is the paintwork is certainly not what I wanted but its bloody amazing I couldn't stop staring at it ![/blockquote] Errr...whats that supposed to mean Claire.. Is it not in the colour you wanted or is it a poor paint job or what ... Bare in mine we know the merits of your "Shine" therefore it won't take you long to have it gleaming..Bling Bling... 8) 8)
  6. Hmmm... on second readings of the first posting yes it could be the pump.. but then if its spraying I would have thought your fan belt would start to sqeal or around the chassis leg be wet..
  7. Errrr.... Yep its the radiator unfortunately, its the crimps on the core thats let you down amigo !sad .. mine did this also and since replacing the radiator....No Wuckin' Furries..Level restored to normal and...the car appears to run cooler too! Oddly enough I had the same result last night and Bricked myself that it has happened all over again.. but the temperature was low last night and the car was just washed so I put it down to water through the grill sitting on the radiator thawing off... checked the levels first thing this morning and...success!!! Levels all normal ... Bad news Amigo,
  8. Nah! You're safe mate... If its only trace then your OK, its more than likey just dampness in the cap, or the seal on the cap is not what it used to be !sad .. nothing to worry about, or if you want to just keep an eye on your levels for a while for peace of mind !shy . The Audi 5 pots and Jetta/ Golf /Passat 1.6/1.8 carbs were all notorious for this.. nothing to worry about ...
  9. Hey Baz... has the Engine arrived yet or are you still on pedals only?
  10. Oooooohhhh those homemade leather seats look comfy, surely they can't be better than your VR's, Hmmm...Maybe thats why the change?? !dodge
  11. Thanks there "Mighty", thats what I was leading up to, mine starts the car no problemo but every now and then lets out a squeal, and was defined as a "Lazy" starter..probably right though, a bit of grease may suffice..
  12. Can you take a photo of where its located etc? as I can't see why the engine needs supported whilst the starter is removed, the whole unit must weigh only 4-5 kilo if that therefore is not gonna make the engine fallout, not only that but on my car (Passat) the starter is located just in front of the radiator fan motor, on top of the gearbox, to the right of the Block, therefore access should be fairly easy and it is only bolted in by the maximum of three bolts. I presume you are talking about the earth strap from the solonoid to the starter motor?? A GSF starter is only £86 therfore may be an
  13. Sounds more like a starter problem, could be the same as mine, a lazy starter, Me?? I'm just letting it go for the mo the car is always startin, so I'm not gonna bother ..just yet...
  14. Start wif the basics, 1/Check that all plugs are screwed in tight (Better still, check that the plugs have been changed! Both have been known to happen!) ( 2/Check all plug leads are connected properly, check condition inside the lead head, could be that the lead terminal has been crushed or is slack. Dry off in the oven or piping hot radiator until the leads are very hot to touch, NOT MELTED! Then, spray liberally with WD40 all over and allow to dry and reinstall. 3/ Remove Coilpack and dry in same manner, checking for cracks as you go, have a look with a magnifying glass it helps , then sp

  18. Usually the pump "Hisses" when its working fine, not loud mind, but a light hiss, if its now buzzing, then yes, the pump is on its way out. Hopefully its not located in the tank but outside or in front of the subframe, otherwise make sure that when you decide to replace it that the tank is near empty!! The last three times I've done a tank pump I've been caught out with the tank nearly full or is full!!!!!!!!!! Arrrrgghhhh!!!!!!! ~ %-6
