  1. hopefully you got it sorted, but i had the exact same symptoms a couple of months ago. got my ht leads replaced and that sorted it...
  2. it's now been sorted. £170 total cost at nationwide autocenter... just shows how much the RAC man tried to rip me off...
  3. the garage was definitely a mate's place. my suspicion was immediately raised when he went into the cab of his van to make the call. he was on first name terms with the guy. my flat-mate says i should report him (as did my son's mother) because they said he's not allowed to do that. he must have a 'arrangement' with the guy who owns the garage. first thing he said was 'there is a garage that we work with' as if it was somehow authorised by the RAC...
  4. i also got a second quote (from the nationwide autocenter) of 150-180 quid. guess my car will be getting towed there then...
  5. i had a look at that guide - i'm not a complete fool, so i'd be willing to have a bash if i thought i was gonna save myself 300 sheets... on a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult is it? (10 being rock hard!)
  6. the RAC man has just been. he said the water pump needs to replaced because the bearings have gone. he rang a local garage in slough, which he recommended and after a few minutes conversation, he came back with a price. £300 plus vat... that includes labour, which the book says is about 5 hours... does this sound like i'm being ripped off? i held back on getting the car towed to the garage immediately until i asked on here, so if it seems reasonable, i will get the car towed there tomorrow...
  7. i had another look and it seems like it might (as you say) be coming from below that black part i have marked in the picture. the car is parked outside my mates house now, so i'm thinking about calling the RAC tomorrow morning. do you reckon they will be able to diagnose that problem on a call out?
  8. i always cain it on the way home from work! it does indeed have a pipe going into the top of it. here is a link to where the noise is coming from: http://www.mediafire.com/?6fhmd9tmjw5
  9. please help me. i've got a 96 vr6 golf. i just drove back from work and when i got close to my door, i turned the music down on the stereo and heard a horrible grinding noise coming from the engine. if you look at the engine, there is a grey 'lid' on the top with the vw logo and the vr6-dohc written underneath it. to the left of that, there is a black 'compartment', about 6 inches by 4 inches, (shaped like a 'back-to-front D' the grinding noise definitely sounds like it's coming from there and it doesn't sound good! how bad is this? sorry, i'm a compete non-expert when it comes to engines...
  10. lol - must be something in the air! since last week, my highline has started misfiring, BUT only between 1-2000 revs - once it gets past 2000, it fires normally. also, it is fine from cold, but after about 5 minutes, it starts getting sluggish... it's defo not the coil pack, cos that went on me last year and it fires differently when the coil pack is the problem. the car jerks forward when the coil pack is dodgy, but now it just seems really sluggish when it's misfiring...
  11. hi VR6Rich - yeah, that sounds like what i need. do you know of any specialists near heathrow that can do it for a reasonable price? thanks...
  12. i had a set of fk konigsport coilovers fitted to my highline, but the car is now pulling to the left big time. i haven't changed anything else in the car. also, the outer edge of the front-left tyre is wearing away quite badly... i am a complete noob when it comes to cars, so what do you guys advise i should do to rectify both the pulling and the tyre-wear? i'm about 5 miles from heathrow, but would be willing to travel a good bit outside this to get the job done properly... thanks for your time guys...
