    Tyres

I've tried quite a few and so far the best yet by a long mile (which I'd never considered before) are BF Goodrich G-Force Profilers. The car's handling is transformed and I now get so much more feedback from the steering. I used to have Goodyear Eagle F1's and they lasted a very short time and once they are only half worn the traction is awful and quite scary in the wet! But these BF's that I have now are very good. I only found out about them when I read an article about rally cars and it turned out 5 out of 6 of the major teams use BF Goodrich and consisitently get better times now compa
  3. The RS6 which has 450bhp has come down in price too... still out of my price range at around 20k ish! But one hell of a beast of a car http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICIedOiwwJE&mode=related&search=
  4. 10.5 is standard compression. Very surprised a three layer metal gasket is actually thinner than the stock gasket. As Jay mentioned I would have thought it would be thicker and thus reduce your compression. One metal gasket on it's own, like one from a mk4, is thinner, but more than one it is thicker. Either way I would assume any pinking if you do have any would be down to the chip, not the gasket at all. Some "off the shelf" chips do cause problems. I would recommend the full custom remap at Stealth mate. They will get the most power from your mods (I assume you have cams or more exte
  5. Who did the work mate? I paid a "well known" garage to do my chains and turns out they never actually took my gearbox out (verified by two external specialists) and just replaced the top tensioner. I still had the chain rattle afterwards and they had even put the cams back in incorrectly resulting a huge flat spot low down in the revs. Above 2.5k revs it was fine. If I were you I would find out if they actually took the gearbox out (as the job is impossible to do if the box is not taken out). Could be that they put the cams back in incorrectly. If the timing is out by a very small amount
  6. Could be ignition switch. Happened to me a couple of months ago. I thought it was a flat battery etc and had exactly same symptoms as your.. no cranking over at all, fuses fine, battery was new. And I knew it wasn't the starter motor as that was fairly new. Had it replaced (£60 or £70 to do the lot inc. vat). Starts a dream every time now and really notice the difference.
  7. I've got Vibratechnics and they seem very good. Not worth getting the very rear mount though as it sits right under the steering rack and will cause a lot of vibration. I just had two out of the three fitted.
  8. Your engine blew?? Pretty rare mate for that to happen. Sorry to hear it. What caused it? Was it modded in any way or chipped? As to internal engine mods stock parts are extremely strong. Really depends if you want to go forced induction or not. If you do then the only real upgrade is to fitter a thicker metal head gasket and stronger head bolts to lower the compression.
  9. So skinny no wonder she fell. lol excellent one mate.
  10. Didn't personally have a good experience with them a year or two ago. And reading another vw forum I'm apparently not the only one. However others say good things about them though since I used them, so they may be better now. They do have some awesome example cars.
  11. I used to be with Adrian Flux and they kept charging me each time I made a change to my ins. policy no matter how small. Plus (which was far worse) was that they were only open up to 5.30
  12. Yes it will soften it up with higher profile yes. If your wheel diam is 16 then you should stick to 45 profile to keep the rolling radius the same as stock (otherwise it will put your speedo and gearing out). If you're going to 17 wheels then I'd stick with 40 profile. Higher profile also improves acceleration.
  13. The garage itself has no authority to say it's not insured (the cheeky gits). That's for your ins. co to say. Similar thing happened to me when my car was parked up - luckily the guy was a neighbour and left his number. Basically he admitted full fault - my ins. co (elephant) tried to get me to use one of their own approved garages- but the garage gave a rediculously high quote to get it all fixed to the extent my car would be economical to repair. I then demanded I get a quote from a garage of my choice which I did and got all the work done. You have the right to use a garage of your own c

    job

Sorry to hear that mate. Good luck in the job search. This kind of bad thing happens to all of us at some point. Know how you feel.

    Top Gear

First I've heard. Are they not repeats? If they are new episodes they haven't advertised it too well as I normally keep a good look out for it but have seen no adverts at all. They did say back at the start of the year that they would be doing a new series in the summer but as yet I've heard nothing. Hope they do do a new series. Still amazes me they put it on bbc2 and not bbc1 when it rakes in more viewers than both channels put together (it has a HUGE international viewing) Not that I care too much as long as its on a channel. In my personal opinion its the only thing worth watching on bb

    FLOODS!!!

That does look pretty bad. Down in the south it's been fine. Was really hot and sunny yesterday. Couldn't believe how bad it's been elsewhere. Guess the hosepipe ban will come in to force pretty soon (if not already!)
  17. To keep to the same rolling radius it would need to be 40 profile. 225 is pretty wide. May need to roll the arches slightly at the front.
  18. I did read the original post and I'm not getting confused. The problem is not the "foreigners" but our own Government and system. There are many many more than 3 million English nationals (primarily chavs or pikeys) that choose not to insure their car too. It's actually far cheaper to buy a banger, not insure it and pay the penalty for getting caught than it is to insure a car. It's rediculous. People, whether visitors from outside England or even worse: pikeys/gypsies, are simply taking advantage of all the loopholes in our c**p system. When you watch those programs like World's worst po
  19. Not something to do with the horn is it? Sounds very close to where the horn is.
  20. GSF is trustworthy - I would just ask them if the particular part you need is OE. They probably do their own version as well as OE. OE is always the best quality.
  21. No different to when us Brits are driving in other countries.

    FLOODS!!!

Had a bit of torrential downpour Fri morning, with quite a lot of surface water but no flooding. I'm near Brighton. By the arvo it was all gone.

    SPEEDO:S

Not legal mate. You need a MPH speedo in order to pass an MOT. Doesn't it read MPH in the inner part of the speedo in smaller writing? (just like our MPH speedos have KPH readings in small writing)
  24. Very unlikely they will fit due to the weight of the engine. Someone on here tried putting some 16v Golf coilovers to his VR and the front suspension was way too low, with lots of knocking and looked odd as the back suspension was really high in comparisson.
