  1. I live in the south east too but a visit to Stealth (is just over 2 hours away) is well worth it for a remap. If your car is ODB1 which it will be if its a 1993, then it will certainly gain a few horses (approx 5-10bhp, especially beneficial now you have an enlarged throttle body) as well as improved drivability. Far better than a superchip as you say...and the same price too (£300+vat). Cams will give a similar increase in power and the remap is normally needed with cams. The Phirm in the south east are very good. They're fitting cams for me in a couple of weeks. tell em Matt sent you
  2. Could also be the cam position sensor. As said above get it on Vag Com (a decent VR6 specialist will do this for free) and Vag com will let you know if there are any sensor faults anywhere on the car. Whereabouts are you based?
  3. Hi I have my car lowered approx 40mm and today when I went round a sharp bend pretty hard I had complete control but I noticed a brief noise which sounded out of place (wasn't loud but hard to describe)... could this have been the tyre rubbing on the arch (there isn't a lot of gap between the tyre and wheel arch on flat ground!)? It was a sharp bend at high speed. I don't normally drive like that! But was testing the handling... if anyone is thinking of getting a gmax kit..go for it. The handling is amazing and totally transforms the looks! Cheers for any help.

The earlier golfs are called OBD1 ("on board diagnostics") which refers to the ECU. Later golf vr's from mid '95 onwards are OBD2. Earlier golfs put out 174bhp standard and OBD2 put out ~185-190bhp (although there are no official figures for some reason) - but the OBD2 has a bigger throttle body, inlet manifold and self learning ECU. Both OBD1 and OBD2 are 2.8 litre. Only the corrado's came in 2.9 litres but all of those were OBD1 and also had 190bhp.
  5. Right... last question.. are there any directions available from the A509 to Santa Pod? I'm coming from the south via the M1 (coming off at J14 onto the A509). Do I go through the village of Bozeat? Just heard the weather is going to be rainy most of the day !sad Do they stop quarter mile runs if it's mildly moist?
  6. Very nice. Are they similar to Audi TT wheels? What drop do you have?
  7. Yeah mate...had a similar day down in the south...was sunny all day and then when I was waxing it it kept threatening to spit rain but luckily (this time) it didn't. Downside is my car will prob get all nice and dirty on the drive up on the motorway! Damn dark colours! At least the winter is over... several times recently I had got round to buffing the car off and find I'm bloody rubbing ice back and forth on the roof!! Caused a nice scratch. Now I just give up in the winter!
  8. Damn...the link has disappeared... looks like the page has been taken down or the web address has changed.
  9. Cheers mate. Now I understand 82 should be fine. Saw Tim today at The Phirm. Definitely going to get one of their quick shifts. Did you just ask for one inbetween race spec and stock? I wouldn't mind having it much shorter... wish I had it for tomorrow..could reduce my quarter mile times! Have you had a chance to open your car up and test those cams you had fitted?
  10. Hi Just had some new Eagle F1 tyres fitted to my two front wheels. My wheels are the standard 15" bbs alloys. The tyre size is 195/50/15. However I have noticed the speed rating is "82V" instead of "86V" which is what is used to be on my old 205 width tyres. Is 82V fine for a VR6 and is it only the "V" / letter that matters, not the number? What does the number mean.. is it lower because I am on smaller 195 width tyres? Thanks for any help.
  11. VAG ones are supposed to be better quality than aftermarket. Got all mine for £59, which may be more than others but it is supposed to absorb any impacts better as opposed to being brittle. Mines the same as yours Whitedog... looks far better than the later vr6 'thin' standard splitter which I used to have, which is exactly the same as on the bog standard 1.4 golf. Not sure why the earlier vr6's and gti's got the deep front splitter whereas the later ones didn't.
  12. Sounds like something from the local chippie! !lol What is it... similar to a superchip? Is the entry fee £15 PLUS £20 (£35 total) to do unlimited runs, or £20 total for entry and runs? Is it possible to pay for just 2 or 3 runs? Anyone know if the jet car will be running?
  13. Cheers guys. What is a good time for the quarter mile for a lightly modded mark3 vr6 (like mine with 190ish bhp)? Are we talking mid 15's?
  14. Is it compulsory to spin your wheels before going up the quarter mile strip (to warm the tyres up)? Will they let you go up without doing this? I know it is beneficial and will give the car better grip but I'm getting brand new tyres the day before so don't want to wear them out in one day!
  15. Totally agree...what a f*cker. Do as above get his number plate, and time of the incident and go to the local police station. If you have his number plate they will pursue it... may not come to anything but it will at least cause him hassle by knocking on his home door!
  16. Happy Birthday! I'm 30 in June... will be strange not being in my 20's anymore!
  17. Silkolene and the Syntha Silva (it will have "Quantum Syntha" on the bottle and will be silver in colour) are the two to go for... should be semi-synthetic. Don't go for fully synthetic as that is too thin.
  18. My Milltek fitted perfectly. All comes down to fitment...AND how it comes out the factory - occasionally you will get dud products.. which is a real hassle but sod's law. Stealth who fitted it said it was a really good quality exhaust and were very impressed with it. As with the supersprint you can cruise at 70-80mph and it is silent.. until you want to floor it and then it sounds how a vr6 should sound! Comes down to personal preference.
  19. That's what I thought... wasn't sure as I asked about this a while back and someone replied with a link for the GTI Festival in 19th June/July. Must have been the summer one. So, anyone been to the GTI festival before? What other makes of cars go or is it strictly only VW? Does the Jet car do any runs? Prices? Opening times? Thanks for any info.
  20. Hi A few questions about the Santa Pod GTI Festival... Is it this Sunday (2nd April) or in June/July? What time does it open and is it £15 per person? Are other cars allowed to take part in the quarter mile runs? I went to a Jap Fest santa pod day which was brilliant fun last year. Although it was mainly Jap cars there it was very friendly and lots of other makes were allowed to go up the strip, such as Audi, BMW etc which I thought was good and added variety. They also had a jet car go up the quarter mile strip... bloody hell that thing is loud and fast!! Is the GTI Festival more stric
  21. Very nice. Are they Borbet wheels? What drop do you have?
  22. Hi mate. I don't have air con and have the standard 15" bbs alloys (they are 205 width). No rubbing at all. Can't notice any difference in the steering at all. The extra weight (approx 25kgs) shouldn't make too much of a difference. The gap at the front between the tyre and wheel arch is slightly bigger than the rear...so if anything it will probably just reduce the gap so it is equal (if anything it will only be a 1cm increase compared to a car without A/C). If you have any questions re the GMAX kit The Phirm are very helpful and will answer them. Cheers Matt
  23. Edit my last post - my mistake meant to say 2.6 to 2.8 BAR...not psi. I think this equates to 30 - 32psi all round.
  24. Got car booked in to have two new front tyres - Goodyear Eagle F1's... going for the 195 width as I think my handling will be improved with the stiffer tyre wall...as it feels very slightly mushy occasionally with the 205's. Plus I couldn't see the F1's in the 205 size anywhere. However I think the 195 should make the cornering a bit better. For £52(inc balancing fitting etc) cracking value per tyre. Just have to wait for my rears to wear out (will be a long time as they have loads of tread) then I can have F1's all round!
  25. Just had a GMAX kit fitted. Must be lowered at least 40mm all round even though it is supposed to lower it 35mm. When you ride a long you cannot tell the difference to stock...it is so smooth and comfortable yet far more control round corners. The improvement to looks is excellent... I can only fit one finger between the rear wheel arch and tyre and two fingers at the front... If you fit a deep front splitter like I have it will look low and aggresive at the front while still having ample height (12 cms ground clearance) to get over speed bumps etc. Total cost £230 inc vat for the kit.
