  1. I am assuming that's what's up with mine as when it get warm it steams up the inside of the windscreen. I'm also going to do the head gasket just to be safe as I don't know where the car has been and I know it will be 100%. Rather spend a few quid on parts and bit of my spare time (when I actually get some) than have to it die on me.
  2. Just staying in and having a few beers with the family. As for New Years resolution 1st is get the golf sorted then get my mot license and own garage sorted.
  3. Not too much to update but exhaust was blowing have sorted that with a sleeve off eBay. Think the coilovers need winding up as I caught the sump pulling onto a 4 post lift. Heater matrix has arrived so will get that fitted at weekend hopefully along with a new sump. Then I can start the wheels and bodywork

    paint code

I rang the vw parts department gave them my reg and they told me my paint code
  5. Have to be very careful when removing the old brake pipes as they sometimes seize and round or pull threads. If your fairly confident I would say go for it. Little tip when removing old brake pipe ends. Cut the pipe off and put a socket over the old end stops it rounding and can get a better grip on it.
  6. Not that bad of a job if you can't do it yourself a local garage should do it for few quid.
  7. If its pulling to one side could be a brake imbalance as your replacing them anyway just make sure the piston isn't seized in caliper and everything is clean and moving free. As for the suspension apparently it's a common thin on the golfs for the top mount to sit higher. From a mot point of view it looks like a fail but is actually built that way. As for the rust no real to tell without just diggin in and see what you find.
  8. The vr does feel a lot faster and I do save a small fortune in not pottering about in it which funds the plans I have for it. But sometimes I miss being able to overtake or forget I'm driving a 1.0 put my foot down and nothing happens.
  9. I have a 1.0 corsa to run about in so the golf isn't my daily driver. Would like to try it one of the reasons I took on a project was to push my limits as a mechanic and also learn new skills. That's why I want to paint it myself and I have a painter to show me and keep me on track.
  10. Liking the sound of your plans, already looks good and will go like a rocket with a turbo on it. Good luck with the Peugeot might be worth checking the clutch cable on it.I have had a few customers complain of clutch going and turned out to be the cable on peugeots as the teeth inside the adjuster wear down over time and the cable doesn't pull the arm all the way back on the box.
  11. My original plan was just make it road legal and use and abuse it. That changed the first time I drove it. Now the more I look on here the more I want a turbo and 4wd build just have no funds.
  12. Works out a lot cheaper for me this way. I get all parts trade discount and do work my self one of my mates does smart repairs paint chips etc.. And I know a very cheap welder who does a brilliant job as he restores cars for a living so pretty lucky tbh.
  13. You got a bargain there. The best bit for me is my car is literally parked 2 foot away from my toolbox at work but I can't work on it customers come first. Hopefully get some spare time over Xmas and New Years.
  14. That's the problem finding the time as I spend all my time fixing other people's cars.
  15. So far I have fitted a new exhaust back box and centre pipe, a k+n induction kit and wing is ready to go on. Also fitted a set of coilovers last weekend. They are cheap eBay ones for now but come with 2 year warranty so will do for now. Only pic I have after the suspension change. Next up is replace the heater matrix, refurb my new alloys in anthracite, paint all exterior trims in vw gloss black pearl. Then prep the whole car for paint after New Years.
  16. Looks really good hopefully I can get mine to look as tidy as yours.
  17. I was told it needed at least 500 to get it through a mot. But this is what I do for a living so first up I got the sills welded (small patch either side on front). Had to replace 2 brake pipes a rear damper for mot. I also gave it full service whilst I was working on it. Then I just drove it for a while. Spoke to a relative who had a few vw bits laying around so a quick trip to Scarborough and 100 later I had a k+n induction kit, spare bumpers and a set of 17 inch carrera rep alloys.
  18. Thought I would stick up a progress thread for my mystic blue 5 door. Having searched for a while for a project car I decided on a vr6. No luck finding one anywhere then one popped up on gum tree for 450 as needing work for mot. After making a quick call turns out I knew the seller and got it for 300. This is how it stood.
  19. Hi my names anth and im a lurker. Have posted a few times but mostly browsing trying to get ideas and inspiration for my project. Got a 5 door mystic blue will get a progress thread up soon hopefully.
  20. As said they are 17mm with the covers on they may be 22mm.
  21. Mine just made it to the show (water pump packed in day before) so left it in car park in a sorry state. It's locked up in garage now getting a bit of tlc hopefully have it all finished for next year. I would be up for a vr6oc if the car is up to standard when I'm done with it.
  22. I was at Leeds harewood this year was a good show. Also there is one next summer starting in Pickering the vw gathering I think it's called.
  23. £60 that's what I mean getting too expensive to enjoy although do like the look of the new guitar game that lets you use your own guitar. Would rather put my money into the vr6 at the moment
  24. That's what puts me off with gaming now pay 400+ for a console 40+ for a game. Then 2 month down the line we have made it better but you will have to pay to play new levels or drive new cars haven't I spent enough already. I got a good deal few months back on a slim ps3 with FIFA 13 but because the game had already been played on I had to pay to play it online. Anyway rant over just think its one big rip off now.
  25. Haven't fitted one to a golf yet but done quite a few over the years on various cars and vans. Not that hard to do, take off track rod end remove boot where arm meets the rack. Then unscrew the arm at the ball joint. As for specialist tools I find a good pair of stilsons or monkey wrench whatever you want to call it to get a good grip of the end of the arm as it can be quite tight and awkward to get at. A little tip is to lock the steering and push the rack out to get better access. Hopes this helps I'm useless at trying to explain something via text
