  1. So. just coming up to 4 years of ownership... bought for £1700 quid, and spent another £1000 a week later with full service new discs/pads suspension bushes HT leads and God knows what Anyway, for £2,700 quid I had a cracking VR6, '96 car with 108K on the clock... and now 114K so thats 6K miles in just under 4 years..... I work away so the old girl's not a daily..... averaging around 1500 miles a year.... So here's the problem.... (you've guessed already)........ RUST................. Mainly (and terminal) on the front wings... so two new wings needed... Had some welding done for
  2. Thanks Pete.... I think the strut thing under the bonnet is normal.... It's just up and down... I'll see what the guys say at the next MOT in October...... been like it for over three years now............ I'd like to go back to sensible wheels, whilst the 17's look good, I know from experience that fitting lower profile tyres to maintain a rolling radius will invariably result in handling issues.... the sidewall flex is an important part of the overall suspension setup...... So, can you recommend the ideal wheel/tyre combination? I have no problem with (for example) st
  3. Hmmm Interesting, so about 8000 VR6's..... Currently, between PH and Autotrader there's only about 4 for sale in the UK....
  4. I thought I'd had my VR6 for about 3 years, but I've just been going through the car file and looking at the paperwork It'll be 4 years in October Anyhoo she's got 17" Fox racing wheels on (previous owner fitment) and been lowered I'd say about 30mm.... Never been able to carry two peeps in the back because the tyres catch the wheel arches with more than one person in there.... Also, the springs are badly corroded (advisory last year), and there's play in the top mounts both sides at the front (under the bonnet). So I'm thinking, go back to original suspension set-up,
  5. Hi guys, windows down all the way (dunno how - wasn't me) but won't go back up.... I'd like to check the switch and wiring but have no idea how to get the door card/interior off to get to the electrics and mechanicals behind..... Guessing it's something like pulls away then drop/slides but I don't want to damage anything.... Thanks in advance, Chilli :-)
  6. Hi all, I bought my VR6 just over 12 months ago, with 108k on the clock, and have done about 1200 miles in her since then! This is due to a combination of working away and having a convertible motor that I use more than the Golf in the summer.... I actually do about 5k miles in the other car, so the Golf is, I suppose, my second car! So, she was MOT'd recently, and had some advisories, notably loose suspension top mounts, corrosion on front discs, and nast little rust holes, one each side, on the underside just to the rear of the front wheel arches. She still pulls to the left slightly (p
  7. Right, update... Had a full geo done this morning and problem is sorted... Along with the 17" rims the car was lowered by 30mm (previous owner), but seemingly not set up after being lowered, so camber was about 2 degrees out..... now rectified and the difference is amazing.... thanks for all the posts guys... Chilli
  8. Good shout!! presumably it was binding in some way, preferring not to maintain a straight ahead position? This would make alot of sense for my symptoms, it pulls probably 95% of the time, and unless it's my imagination, more so after having just undertaken a left turn.... I know some Fords have problems with power steering hydraulic issues which can cause the steering to pull one way or the other rather than naturally return to 'straight ahead'... Many thanks for that :-) Chilli Edit: May I ask, is the steering rack a common Mk3 jobbie or specific to the VR6? Thanks again, Chilli
  9. It's a noticeable and almost continuous pull... but occasionly and only for very brief periods it seems to disappear.. hence the possibility that it might be power steering related. The four wheel alignment is (alledgedley) good, i.e. all four wheels are pointing in the right direction, and the front wheel tracking is correct, so I'm guessing either the camber or caster is out or power steering is causing it....
  10. It's pulling most of the time, although oddly on occasions it doesn't seem to....... and no obvious pulling to one side under braking, both front wheels run free when off the ground also. Could be a bent rim but there's no vibration at all coming through the steering wheel.... The full Geo will hopefully pinpoint the cause, fingers crossesd :-) Regarding the wheels rubbing, any stiffer and it'll have less suspension than a gokart.. Raising it's a good idea.... It's my first Golf so was wondering if there was anything (e.g. particular bushes) that might be a common Golf Mk3 fault that caused th
  11. Hi all, not suggesting one causing the other, but wanted to ask about both.... Bought the car in October last year and have driven less than a thousand miles in that time. Had a full service carried out by a recommended Indie in November, however car was pulling to the left when I bought her, and theres a relatively recent bill in the folder for a replacement passenger side track rod end, plus the steering wheel wasn't anywhere near straight. So, guys checked it out during the service and found nothing bent, although they replaced the bushes at the top of the struts, and aligned the steering w
