    Ahh right I'll take the dash and everythingout then and hve a good look around. When you buy an ecu off eBay do you need to decode it?

    I recently did a conversion into a mk3 gti and found that the obd2 don't need the relay 109. However you say you can't get yours to communicate with vagcom, and you don't have this relay? I can't seem to communicate with vagcom either and I too don't have relay 109. Would be interesting to found out if it chnages anything.

    As some of you know I'm going to be stripping the head down and getting it skimmed, this means buying a valve spring compressor but there's loads anybody know what throat clearence i need ?

    What about lambda sensor if you can smell fuel surly is over fueling or possible fuel leak?

    Unfortunatly pal only the bosses stuff for the ascari race car get made. I'm technically in the aerospace engineering industry and make parts for planes. I wish I could do stuff for my car an other peoples cars I really do mate. I had actually thought o buying a milling machine and a lathe because the amount of stuff I get asked to do is unbelibable but I'm sorry I can't help:(

    Cheers for your input it does give ter people a bit of an insight into how much work is actually involved in engine rebuilds etc. I'm a miller/ turner by trade so I know how much time would be involved into having to skim the head recut and grind the valve seats etc. Once again thanks.

    I'm going to take every thing out and give them the bare head to skim then I'll put new seals in and rebuild it.

    600 quid Christ I have been quoted min£25 depending on the level of the skim.

    I don't think it's warped a great deal as it didn't over heat and there weren't any Mayo in filler cap or any oil in water etc I replaced it because I found my spark plugs were the same colour as the coolant and when I took the head off the gasket just crumpled. I looked through all the history with the engine and there were no signs of it being done before and it's on just over 105k. I should be able to take it work and check flatness.

    Well it comes down a large amount in my eyes probably not as much as it use to but hey a little over a grand with all mods declared windscreen included etc etc and only 1 years no claims I don't did it that bad but hey everytime I start the car it's worth every penny.

    That's the same reason the bloke I brought the gti off put coilovers on. It failed the mot before I brought it on buggered shocks. So he brought the coilovers and I got a good deal lol

    Yes I have just been flicking through some old books my dad had. I think to put my mind at ease I'm going to get the head skimmed. Don't really wanna be driving to Devon and it go bang. Thanks for your help mate.

    So may sound silly but how much am I looking at for the stem seals and how do I lap the valves back in? Will the place I take it to skim the head more than likely be able to do that?

    Mine does well my coilovers do and it's the very popular 7mm Allen on mine.

    When I brought the mk3 with the original 8v gti in it came on hot tuning coilovers. I then put the vr engine into the mk3 and kept the coilovers and to be honest there holding up pretty well, yes there slighty softer but I anything it feels more reaponsive. Only upgrade I did on suspension so far is vr top mounts. Now I'm not saying go and buy them and buy ones for an 8v but thought I would give you some feedback on them.

    I think it's the oil cooler and oil filter it shouldn't be leaking oil and I am not sure where to get parts or what parts you'll need other than oil and filter and you could give gsf etc a call. Or someone is breaking a vr on here may be worth finding out what you need and asking them if they will do you a deal?

    How do I get rid of the big heavy restrictive thing. As I'm using the gti exhaust system is it any different to a vr6 one? Is there anyway of bypassing it to improve flow?

    Yh the car reek of it. The reason I said coolant is because I didn't skim the head an now I'm paranoid lol.

    When I remove the head to get it skimmed, how to I remove the cams?and can I take it to get skimmed with the valves in? Will the tappets not fall out or anything?

    That mean burning coolant?

    Ahh that's what I could be then. As I drop a vr highlime engine into a gti and didn't use the aircon stuff which explains why it does bugger all when I unplug it.
