Hi Dutch I think that pulling and rolling your arches a fair bit especially on the rear will solve your rubbing dub problem. This will obviously involve spraying the front wings and rear quarter panels as the paint is likely to crack. Once this is done and you uprate your suspension you'll be able to go low Kevin

Do I need to roll my arches?
spindat45 replied to AndreWilk's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Hi. I'm almost certain you will have to roll your arches, especially if you are going to lower it. I've got 7.5x17 rims on mine and they rubbed slightly on G-Max suspension before I had them rolled. The G-Max kit is not ride or height adjustable but drops the car by around 40mm overall. The ride is a lot firmer than standard and the handling is much improved without loosing too much comfort. I find the height is also ideal for my London driving. Coilovers are a bit more expensive but you benefit from better handling and you would be able to alter height and/or dampness depending on the -

I'm glad you got it sorted Chris. I thought it was something like that. When I changed the shocks on mine I did the same thing on one side but realised before I'd done everything back up. I know what you mean about the ride. In my opinion its how the car should have felt as standard. What size rims are you rolling on and did you have your camber done along with the tracking? -
hanbrake light on all the time??
spindat45 replied to Ciaran's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Just a though mate. Check the connector on the reservoir plug for any breaks and also that it plugged in properly. Its gotta be to do with something that as touched when the work was being carried out. Otherwise you could be entering the "VR6 Twilight Zone" -

Hi. The bumpers can be sprayed the same colour as the car but if the paintwork has faded then you may notice the difference in the two colours. The same goes for the side door srips. If you remove the black wheel arch trims then you will be left with smaill holes in the arches where they were fixed. They would neeed to be filled and sprayed professionally. Definately a job for a bodyshop if you are not able to do this youself as it won't look good if you try to cut corners. I hope this is of some help. Kevin

288mm Discs on a '96 VR mate. Have the rears checked at the same time. They do not wear out as quickly as the fronts but they do get old deteriorate with time. Kevin

hanbrake light on all the time??
spindat45 replied to Ciaran's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Check the handbrake switch Ciaran. It may have been damaged or come off when the handbrake cables were unadjusted. From memory the switch is located under the handbrake lever where it clips on and is pressed when the handbrake is released. If you find it then you should be able to open and close it with your fingers and check whether the light goes on and off. You may need to un-adjust the handbrake cables first and remove the handbrake lever from its mountings. (Not as difficult as is sounds btw) Kevin -
No grinding but I've got a squeak when I press the pedal down. LOL

Hi. There are loads of threads on here which should help you make the right decision. I have a Miltek Cat back system on my VR. Lovely sound when you really put your foot down but just a gentle rumble at low revs. It only has 2 silencers compared with the standard 3 box system so less back pressure. I wanted a Jetex originally (also 3 box I think) as I didn't want anything too loud or boy racer-ish. Jetex are said by many to be a lot quieter than the Miltek. I got the Miltek s/hand for a very good price and I have no regrets as I needed to get rid of the pea shooters in a hurry.

If the noise starts when you dip the clutch then it could be the bearing. If it goes when you dip the clutch then it could be the box itself. (lay shaft) Kevin

When the engine is running, the car is in neutral and you put your foot on the clutch do you hear any difference in the sound under the bonnet? Does anything start or stop making a noise? Might need someone to test this with you. Also does your clutch pedal feel heavy and does it crunch when driving and changing gear? I'm thinking it could be a worn clutch release bearing and or a weak clutch cover. Sounds like its not clearing properly which is why you're having trouble getting 1st and reverse. The spinning feeling could be the release bearing which spins when the clutch pedal is pressed

Hi. As long as it is not a raspy noise coming from the gearbox side at about 2000rpm then i wouldn't worry. That would point towards a timing chain tensioner problem. The VR6 engine is generally a bit rattly on idle. Kevin

Do you only hear it when you get to the biting point in first? If so it souds like the clutch release bearing. Kevin

tt rims and suspension kit.
spindat45 replied to guppers's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
At standard ride height you won't have ANY rubbing problems! :-d I have lowered mine by about 40 mm on TT Comps but I do not have a very stiff ride so there is more suspension travel when going over speed bumps than some coilover set ups. They didn't rub at first but after settling and with a some weight in the back they did rub. Not a nice sound when you've just fitted new tyres. :-( Have them all rolled and maybe pulled slightly on the rears to be on the safe side. Also means that if you ever go for bigger rims or ones with a different offset you won't have any probs. A good bodysho -
The standard shocks do have a lot of travel when going over bumps. I know the sound you are talking about and it is quite common on most cars. Its caused when the piston in the shock returns to its starting position after being compressed when you go over the bump. If the the car is still boucing half a mile after going over the hump then maybe its time to change them The standard suspension on VRs is known to be a bit floaty. Check for leaks on or around the suspension legs and also the bottom of the springs. Kevin

They are probably both OBD2 m8. Kevin

You will definately need to have a cat for the MOT. You could have it removed afterwards but it won't pass a legitimate test without one. Kevin
