  1. I'm not a fan of offset front plates either. A small (bike size) plate on L brackets at the top of the lower air intake looks damn nice on a smoothed front end, but the fuzz might not like that approach too much.
  2. Assuming it's JUST the head that's coming off, it's worth replacing the tappets. This gets rid of that horrible rattle on cold startup. Belt tensioner and aux water pump have to come off anyway, so if either of these parts are getting noisy, replace them as well. It's worth checking the main water pump for leakage also - this is a lot easier to get at with the head off.
  3. As you point out, smoothing the bumper involves fitting headlights with built-in indicators. This, together with the extra work required on the bumper will make it a more expensive option than just replacing your crystal foglight set. but if you really like the smoothed look, then go for it!
  4. The kickdown is activated by a switch attached to the throttle cable itself. The switch is located at the point where the cable meets the bulkhead (in the engine bay).
  5. I tried Meguiar's Gold Class wax for the first time yesterday. I wasn't impressed, to be honest. Despite following the instructions to the letter, it left a lot of streaks and I had to polish it all off again. Maybe it reacted badly with the Autoglym Super Resin I used to polish the paintwork beforehand. Used my usual brand of paint protector, Autoglym Super Gloss finish, and this worked just fine. All nice and shiny now! I'm definitely gonna give clay a try at some point, though. I asked about it in a local refinishing shop and was told there are different grit levels available. Which o
  6. I noticed that this forum does tend to get new members asking the same questions that have already been asked several times. Firstly, I think we need to make forum searching easier, by having a search button at the top of every forum page that just searches the forum, not the whole site as the current search button does. And also, how about a "Frequently asked Questions" section, with answers to questions like: - When to replace timing chains (If I had £1 for every time this one has been posted...) - What to check if electric windows are not working - What to do if ABS light comes on - Superc
  7. In the US, turbocharging is the preferred route to big power on a VR6 and there are several tried-and-tested kits available, with power outputs ranging from 250BHP to over 450! The trouble is that, to date, none of the US kits have fitted straight onto right-hand-drive cars due to the brake servo being in the way. Fitting the US-spec kits has meant either relocating the brake servo or having a custom exhaust manifold fabricated to avoid the fouling in the first place. Most people in the UK have seen this as too much trouble and fitted superchargers instead. For 250-300BHP a supercharger does
  8. Chris, It's worth you starting a new thread about the turbo kits, I'm sure there will be plenty of interest.
  9. The front & rear bumpers on the 1993-1998 Mk3 Cabrios are exactly the same as any other Mk3.
  10. I've tried Optimax several times and it doesn't seem to make too much difference. But I tried BP Ultimate the other week and my engine loved it. Went like a rocket. Generally, though, I run it on normal 95 octane unleaded. Most of my driving is motorway cruising, mind.
  11. You see lots of second hand VR6 air con pumps because people don't need them when they transplant VR6 engines into Mk2s and the like. Try eBay and the various breakers listed in the addresses section of this website.
  12. Cleaning all the crud off the flanges helps when it comes to getting the hoses on, and reduces the chances of leaks later on.
  13. I was just wondering what different colour Samco hoses look like in the engine bay of a VR? Post your pics here! Does anyone have: Blue? Black? Purple? Red? Here are my current ones in yellow:
  14. Defnitely sounds like a problem with your linkage. I'd be inclined to replace the whole lot with a quickshift linkage.
  15. Believe! Even if VW don't make this car, someone should do the bodykit as an aftermarket part for the Golf Mk5. It looks well 'ard!
  16. The Mk3.5 cabrio steering wheel p/n is 1E0 419 091 E Not sure about the airbag.
  17. The problem seems to affect the cabrio too. What's involved in replacing the hinges? Any welding and/or special tools required?
  18. Thanks for the advice. I've got a pressure washer that should be able to deal with the cleaning.
  19. The mk4 steering wheel has different splines, so won't fit on the mk3 steering column. The mk4's airbag wiring is also different. You can fit the steering wheel from the 1998-2002 Golf Cabriolet though, and this is almost identical to the mk4 GTi wheel. This is a straight swap, including the airbag, but second-hand examples are fairly rare.
  20. I'm getting some contact between the plastic wheelarch liners in the front arches and my tyres, so they're going to have to come off. I'm told this will require me to apply sealant to the inner arches to protect against rust etc. What is the best stuff to use? Does the entire inner arch (including the inside of the front wings) need to be covered?
  21. I have the same query as petesvw. My car has recently been resprayed and, although the new paint is very shiny, it is not perfectly flat - there are lumps and bumps in the finish. The article says that clay is used to remove surface containants, but the lumps I've got are irregularities in the surface of the lacquer. Contaminants have not had a chance to build up yet. So is it worth me using clay, or should I go straight to polish?
