So, for those of you that weren't at Ultimate Dubs to see them, here are the new wheels:

There was a lot of divided opinion about them, being 18" and all, and fitting them involved some "fine tuning" of the rear arches with a hammer, but I think the end result looks pretty good! Glad I chose them now!

Thanks for the positive comments about the new rims!! I can't say I've noticed a lot of difference in the handling from the 17s I had on there before. The slightly larger rolling radius of the wheel/tyre combination raises the gearing a bit, making it a bit less liable to wheelspin in 1st, which is good. It goes round corners well.

ps what DOES that sound like with the roof down through a tunnel????????????????????????????? !amazed !amazed :D:D

Ultimate Dubs is the first time I've had the roof down since I sorted the engine out back in November, so I really can't say yet!! When it warms up a bit, I'll be sure to get a recording and post it on here!!

I really fancy supercharging it now just for the noise alone!!! !lol

gotta say nick, thats looking spot on now. always thought your wheels let the car down a touch as they just didnt suit it. now it looks top notch. hope i can park up next to you sometime this season lol. they would look great as a couple. mine can be the bitch as it looks rough as a badgers arse compared to yours lol.

That car has deffinately had a lot of blood, sweat and probably some tears involved in its making.

Totaly awsome project, & superb attention to detail.. I wish i could be that thorough. Vw's are too well put together for my liking, far too much hard work for myself. I take my hat off chap!

Thanks for all the positive comments. You are all too kind!!!

Sticking those wheels on was a bit of a risk 'cos no-one (that I know of) has ever put them on a mk3 cab before. The rear arches had already been rolled, but still needed a bit of "tweaking" with a hammer to get rid of the rubbing. The current ride height is pretty much the lowest I can go without modifying the inner arches themselves....

VRMonster, what stage is your cab at now? I reckon PVW or Golf+ would be well up for doing a "Mk3 cab shootout" feature.... Whatever hapenned to Matt-24V as well?

Haven't done an update for a while, so here we go..

I fitted my new Schrick 268 Cams and BMC air filter, but Vince @ Stealth couldn't get any decent figures out of it, suspecting the valve timing to be out.

An inspection of the upper chain tensioner revealed it to be in a pretty bad way, so off the car went to Strictly Dubs for chain & tensioner replacement. It was a good job I had it done when I did - the tensioner plate was almost completely worn through to the metal and the condition of the chain guide the other side was just scary! It came out in 5 pieces!!!

With the chains & tensioners replaced, Vince was able to map it up. I got 203BHP @ 6000RPM and 179lb-ft @ 5687RPM

All that was left to do was to sarten up the engine bay a bit (still plenty left to do though!). Yellow Samcos were replaced with blue ones and some blue magnecor ignition leads fitted.

Here's some pics from Inters on 17 June:
