  1. The automatic transmission in the vr6 uses what vw call a 'fuzzy' transmission-it learns the drivers habits and tries to anticipate what your going to do next via a transmission control module and some other sensors. Think it is known as an 01M transmission. I believe the sport mode will hold onto a gear longer and shift quicker than when if it was in economy mode. This is what a can tell from a quick browse through google. For more info look for a website called Ross tech, they have a lot of info on the electronic systems in our generation of golf. Welcome to the forum and I hope it's of some
  2. That is odd, this is the port next to the ash tray and above the fag lighter? If so this is the obd 2 diagnostic port, have you got a cable to connect it to a laptop yet?
  3. Dare I ask how much that little lot set you back?!
  4. That't normal, some early vr's and gti's had shorter catalytic converters, so the front pipe is made longer to accommodate this
  5. May need to do a throttle body adaption, have a search around and you'll find plenty of info on it.
  6. Yup, perfectly normal. Without it the back box will knock on the boot floor and drive you potty!
  7. I think its LB6Z, Montana Green metallic. I 'think' it was only available between '92 and '93 which is why I've only seen it on early mk3 gti's and VR's
  8. Cracking home build, not my usual cup of tea but still very nice!
  9. Gong to stick with my 360 and PS3, turning more and more to my PC for gaming these days.
  10. Without it plugged in the ECU defaults to an inlet temperature of 20 degrees I think. Mine had an issue recently and the car would stall on start up when warm. I'm guessing the OP will be using an aftermarket engine management ecu, and this probably takes a reading from this sensor too. I have read on some forums the sensor is better located near the air box (or air inlet) to get a truer indication of intake temperatures, as the temps in the inlet manifold may suffer from heat soak.
  11. Sorry should of been clearer. I've got 2 sets of wheels, 1 with my winter tyres already mounted, running some Nankang SV-2's which have highlighted the lack of grip I was getting from the summer tyres in the wet. The other wheels (Solitude's) are my 'summer' wheel. Iirc the winter tyres are suitable for temperatures <7 degrees.
  12. So with the summer wheels on hibernation, I've been thinking about replacing all four for a matching set. Currently I have Nankang NS-2's on the front which wear well, but the grip in the wet is poor. On the back is Dunlop SP2's I think, haven't run these in the front but seem to give off a lot of road noise. Now, the tyres I've been looking at are the Continental Premium Contact 2's, Avon ZV 5's and the Falken ZE 914's. Anyone have experience with any of the above, or any other alternatives I should consider?
  13. Observation has got to be one thing that some people don't focus enough on when driving. At work driving fire appliances with sirens, blue lights and flashing headlights, its interesting to see how long it can take for some road users to react. There are plenty of idiots on the road, as there are good drivers. Myself, I try and be in the best place should something 'unexpected' happen.
  14. I see where your coming from, and I did consider tracking some down. But as the leather on the door card is only the insert, I think what is there more compliments other leather touches in the interior, such as the steering wheel, gear knob gaiter and hand brake gaiter.
  15. Sunday clean With nothing much better to do on my days off, thought I'd keep on top of the car and give it a wash. Cleaned up nice and easily, especially the wheels, paying off big time having spent hours waxing them! Went over the car with some Meguiars tech wax I've had knocking around for years that needs using up. Went on and was buffed off nice and easily. Would like to get a rotary polisher and deal with all the swirls and scratches, something that can wait until next year. Checked all the fluids and happy to see them all o.k and checked the tyre pressures-including the spare. Was a
  16. Will have to be a Sony head unit bud, the wiring is specific to Sony and will differ across other brands.
  17. Certainly is good stuff, wish I'd bought this when I first did the gearbox oil. Leather door cards fitted Cracked on getting the new door cards fitted this morning. Wasn't a bad task as I'd had a couple of them off before to replace a window regulator and check some wiring. Broke a couple of the plastic fittings but that's to be expected on 15+ year old components. Biggest ball ache was properly fixing the spade connectors on one of the front aftermarket speakers. Before I started fitting them, I noticed a lot of grime and the driver side door card sounded like a money tin. Unscrews the
  18. Most retro I've got is my N64. My brother is still really into his consoles and I think he still has a mega drive and a Super Nintendo
  19. Wheel bearings finished Finished installing everything on Thursday morning, seems the car goes back together three times quicker than it took to take it apart! Had one minor hiccup though. When I put the car back on its wheels to torque up the hub nut's and wheel bolts, I heard the nearside wheel make a slight clunk and the camber of it looked a little odd. At this point I assumed one of the hub to strut bolts had come loose, so up the car went again, wheel off, and no dice, those bolts were perfectly tight. Noticed at this point there was a little play in the wheel hub and thought the whe
  20. Appears to be a common issue, can pick up the seals for a few £'s
  21. I'm led to believe the original manifold flows quite well anyway...but I could be wrong
