  1. An OBD2 2.8 Golf is supposed to develop 190bhp anyway, as standard. The engine management and bits and pieces are much better sorted than on a Corrado 2.9, which is mainly a Golf Mk2 with the VR stuffed in. You'd have all sorts of other issues to fit it - loom, ECU and so on. Agree with Admin, why bother. Why not sell the golf and buy a Corrado? Even as standard, no suspension mods, they handle like the dogs danglies and blow the standard Golf VR into the weeds. I know, my son has such a car and it is bloody awesome. And put on an air filter (green cotton?) and Jetex 2 box exhaust and it will
  2. Somehow, not sure how, I stumbled across this evaluation of aftermarket exhausts. It has been done by a US journal and for the US Mk4 VR6 and is dated 2004. BUT they have rolling roaded a load of exhausts, all on the same car (mission!!) to see how much difference they make to power and torque compared to a standard set up. A lot of the makes are foreign to us here. However some are available here. It is a really thorough and informative test. The test shows the power and torque curves for each exhaust and improvement over standard. They all produce improved bhp and torque. http://www.newdimen
  3. I've been in Golf VRs, a Corrado VR and Pug 205 GTis with Powerflows and I think that they are absolutely appaling. Sorry those with them, they are completely chav. I know you can specify it to your taste, but most people's taste who fit Powerflow seems to be way too loud. They produce massive sound from tickover to about 3,000 rpm and then quieten out, so in the rev range you are in most of the time, you can't speak to the passenger. Sorry fans, I hate them.
  4. Sorry been 'off forum' - driving around with a smile! I got mine cheap by pure chance and luck from Awesome, only £232. They have made a massive difference. In fact, if money wasn't an issue I'd go for the biggest rear one you can get which is I think a Neuspeed 28mm adjustable (and change the front to a larger spec, 25mm, as well, to keep some balance otherwise the back will swap with the front with very little encouragement). It is not exactly flick flick on roundabouts, still a bit lazy to respond to the helm, but on long fast sweepers and tight lane type bends, it has transformed it. Stil
  5. I'm sure lots know this, but the MOT testers get 'advisories' about specifics on certain cars and a tester showed me the one for Golf top mounts yesterday because I asked him. Can't recall the exact wording, but the gist of it was - they are meant to have play and should be tested with the weight of the car on them. Not sure how you do that! But some MOT guys don't seem to know this. If they wriggle them with the wheel off the deck, they should expect a lot of up and down movement before they fail them.
  6. Where did you get the tracking checked? Was it done on one of the really sophisticated laser alignment machines - such as a CORGHI? Would tell you if camber (front wheel 'looked' like it was tilting out at the top) and toe and caster are OK or not. There are a lot of muppets out there when it comes to tracking and alignment. Agree you could have a CV joint gone. Car park, full lock and drive, they kind of click/knock if one is knackered. Engine mounts - bonnet up, mate at front, hand brake on (and chocks if going for it) and take little bights with the clutch - don't run mate over! - see if e
  7. The standard front anti roll bar on a (1997) VR is 20mm. I've just fitted an Eibach ARB kit and measured the standard one off the car to see. Used a ruler, not dial measure or verniers, but it is defo not 18mm. Of complete irrelevance to this thread, going up just 2mm in thickness to 22mm increases anti roll stiffness by 46%!!
  8. As per Craggsy, you normally have new bearings fitted when the rear discs are changed. They are a press fit into the back of the disc and a) it is quite difficult to extract the old ones without damaging them they are so cheap you might as well do it when you have new rear disks c) it costs potentially as much in labour to get them out as it does to buy new ones!
  9. Talking standard here and on the road. My mate has a VR Corrado with 280s and my Golf VR has the 288s. Even after he fitted new discs and pads F&R, the Golf brakes feel much more powerful. Seems there is a fair difference. Don't know about 312s, not tried them.
  10. Fronts have bearings. You can just change the top mount and use the old bearing. But as I bought proper VW OEM bearings from my local VAG Trade Parts Specilaists (I'm not trade ) for £4.92 inc VAT each, you might as well put new ones in while you are at it. The VW top mounts were £13.00 each. I'm told it is not worth putting in cheaper after market non VW items - these can wear out very quickly, especially if you have coilies and given the current state of the roads. Venom do Polyurethane Top Mounts by Supersport - they drop the front by an extra 10mm I think. Probably better, harsher and wo
  11. My boy has a VR6 Corrado. Standard apart from Jetex 2 box exhaust and Green Cotton air filter - sounds absolutey awsome. Handles like a god as standard. Amazing car. He needs to sell it as he is running an (amazing) new business in London and is not using it enough. Have a look at the business smallcarBIGCITY - http://www.smallcarbigcity.com - he is Oli. If you want one, go onto the website and give Oli a call. It is a cracker. Great colour.
  12. If a nice one, try about £2,200k? My son bought a 1994 'M' August 1994 car last March (2009) with goodish history for £2,400. 108,000 miles. In fact it is in Lindfield, E Sussex and he needs to sell it. It drives brilliantly, handling of these cars makes the standard Golf VR feel like a bus. I've (his Dad) got a Golf 3 VR6. His is not yet advertised, but he was going to go for £3k plus as they are gently rising again. Just passed MOT, no advisories.
  13. Did you look at the links? If it is really slammed, looks great (maybe, your opinion) but it WILL NOT HANDLE PROPERLY. Read the stuff on Balance Motorsport about serious lowering plus the links I provided. Polys may or may not last longer. ARBs should make it handle a bit better , but if it is really (too) slammed - it is not the way to get the best handling, only looks, I promise! There is another thread where the guy was complaining about the car (slammed) handling like a pig. Raised it up, back to great handling! If you want to drive it, un-slam it. If you want to have it look 'cool' (that
  14. Regarding bump steer. Have you got aftermarket suspension and is your car lowered (a lot?). The poly bushes shouldn’t have any effect on bump steer. It is severe lowering that causes it. Not sure about tram-lining, but I doubt it. I have read on here and other forums that poly bushes a) can squeak can wear out quickly – not sure if that is true. For explanation of why bump occurs, have a look here: http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=2549 And all you ever wanted to know about bump steer and a lot you didn't here: http://www.longacreracing.com/articles/art.asp?ARTID=
  15. As I type my VR is having a set of Eibach ARBs (22/25) fitted (I don't like grovelling around under cars on driveways!) right now. Should get it back later this afternoon. Suspension wise the car is completely standard. It has done 70,000 miles, had new VW OEM shocks, front at 48,000 and rears at 62,000. Objective is to reduce the roll (obviously) so that it improves the turn in (try a classic mini – that’s instant turn in), reduce under steer and make it more nimble. Mine is shocking when you have to do left-right-lefts on roundabouts or twisty bits. Not too bad in long, fast sweepers tho
  16. If you are ever required to go anywhere booted, suited and wearing a tie in the summer the aircon is a bloody godsend. It is such a big engine, I doubt it makes that much difference to fuel consumption and power. If you are caning it full on, you've probably got the windows open to hear the roar! Agree it weighs a lot. I use the aircon more in the winter. My car's windows seem very prone to misting if anything slightly damp gets into it (i.e. you). Because the aircon dehumidifies the incoming air, heater full on and a short burst of the aircon clears the window misting really fast. Whoops, we'
  17. Good find! I'd have had those if I'd found them a year ago, definitely. Not too expensive either at £50.00 - I think the VW (actual VW, was advised not to buy anyone else's) ones with bearings were about £35.00
  18. Been told that the VW OEM front rubber top mounts are notorious for wearing very quickly, cause car to fail MOT and can need replacing after not many 1,000s of miles. Had to replace mine for last MOT about 8,000 miles ago. With all these pot holes they are probably shagged again for upcomong MOT! Looked around for 'improved' versions at the time, couldn't find any. However, just seen these CompBrake solid metal, not rubber, versions for Mk3s on Awesome, code COMPBRAKE-CMB0226. Quite expensive at £53 a pop, but presumably you'd pretty much never have to replace them once fitted? Two questions:
  19. Finally got thru to Awesome. Their story is that someone ordered this kit a year ago, paid a deposit and never picked it up. So instead of putting it back into stock at the normal price (not sure why you wouldn't?), they put it on the website at the price I paid. On the web page it said "20% off - Special Deal". Seems I was just very lucky! Apologies for firing everyone up about this with my original post. They've arrived. Hoping that they will greatly improve my car's standard (crap) handling, improve turn in and make it a bit more nimble.
  20. I tried ringing them this morning to say I'd posted their deal on the VR6 Owners and they might expect more bizzo at that price from a few on here if they extended the offer.....but they were on answering machine....as if it was a Sunday. Maybe I'll try again. At the £232 price, do you reckon they'd be popular?
  21. Hi Ben, just checked, (11th Feb) and your right! They must have just changed it and removed the deal, which was 20% off. I wasn't really looking for ARBs, just happened to go onto Awesome to check something else and there was the deal. I paid £232.65 all up, promise - which was £189.00 before VAT and delivery, so they've put them back up by £50 since 9th Feb. I must just have been very lucky, right place right time! The formatting is screwed up, but here it is cut and pasted from my order acknowledgement. Product Code Name Quantity Price Each Item Total EIBACHE8530-320 Eibach Anti-Roll-Kit
  22. Hi All, by chance I came across this, which you may all know about already. But in case you didn't, I just thought that I'd let you know. Awesome Gti are doing what looks like a great 'special deal' on the Eibach anti roll bar kit (front and rear) for Golf Mk3 VR6s. It is available for £232.65 inc VAT and delivery. Most other companies seem to be charging closer to £270 to £300 for this kit.
  23. All theadvice I've seen says don't buy aftermarket, buy proper OEM top mount bushes from VW. I recently bought a pair, inc bearings, and they cost £35.00 inc. VAT. Probably about £20 for non VW from GSF? Apparently not worth the saving as they wear out much more quickly. Also I've discovered that an experienced VW mechanic can change them both in under an hour. The 'stock' time quoted by VW is I think 3.5 hours. The 3.5 hours assumes the strut will be dismantled and removed completely. In reality the job can be done by disconnecting the top attachement and pushing the wishbone down as far as
  24. Great fix mate, congrats. Phew! Just to add something to the happy ending. The AA came to look at a mate's classic mini that had overheated big time. Turned out it was the thermostat, like yours. We thought maybe the head gasket had been blown, easy to happen on an A Series engine. The guy had a cool little kit that he tested the rad water with and it told him whether there was a) oil or combustion gases, in the water. There wasn't so head gasket OK. I think that you can buy these in Halfords or similar. Not something you need very often but when you do......
