Inner CV Joint Removal - Triple Square Socket
jb9999 replied to steveyj's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Can you not just pull the whole shaft out of the gearbox? -
Tell it like it is bro! Tell him the astra should be in the scrapyard by now as well along with the rest of vauxhall's cacky cack!
-
You should put a little wager on it before you race him. Can't see the astra being that much lighter than the cavalier to outstrip a vr.
-
I raced my mate in his Cavalier SRi, which is about the same year and bog standard, with the 2ltr 16v engine in it and left him dead in the water. Is the astra standard or modified? Think there about 150bhp standard, my mates SRi is anyway and will be the same engine.
-
Sorry mate, I haven't done either , YET anyway. They don't look to bad to get at, sure someone will be able to tell you. I would think the water pump should be ok if it was done that recently, unless the drive belt has been over tightened, which will knack your bearings a lot quicker.
-
Or the tensioner itself. Just a thought
-
Might be your water pump bearing mate. Thats the only bearing I can think of apart from the bearing in the alternator. Try taking the belt off and running it , if the noise goes away after doing this it will be one of the two i would have thought. Then again, I could be completely wrong.

That fuckin' many, my car is rarer than yours!

Do I have traction control?
jb9999 replied to YoungRicky97's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
If anybody wants there VR to run int the snow , or any car for that matter, they will have to put really thin tyres on their car. It's a pressure thing, and living just outside Newcastle in the hills, nobody can tell me anything. With thr weight of the engine over the front wheels you need thin tyres to concentrate the downward (gravity) force of the car into a small a space as possible to cut through snow, wide low profiles just act as a ski and float on top of anything on the road. 165's great, anything widerthan 195's and you might as well stop at home! As I have done a few times. -
8mm magnecor leads - now ordered

Got mine today. Just no car to put them on. Bastard. ~ -
Anyone had new followers (tappets) recently?
jb9999 replied to cadguy77's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
The only difference between the tappets is vw ones will have vw stamped on them some place and because of this cost twice as much. Pattern ones will be engineered to exactly the same tollerances as vw onees. More than likely vw dont actually manufacture the original tappets any way and just out-source like a lot of high volume car manufacturers to keep costs down and profit up. They'll just pay for vw logo on the part. -
93,350 and just ate its first head gasket

Should find you get a bit better throttle responce Bazz. I had 10mm Quadcore ones on my Mk2 16v and made quite a difference on that compared to the standard ones. -
intermittant "splutter" in low revs
jb9999 replied to ni-golf's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Cheers Bazz. I got the 8mm ones as they were the same price as the 7mm and I,m greedy. They did have some 8.5mm ones but meant faffing on filing the holders to fit, i'm also lazy.Cost a little bit more I think but not much. -

I got quoted £120 for a set, but the vw specialist whos doin my head gasket are sourcing them, so cant help you with the rest.Sos -
Yeah just the head coming off Nick. Never thought about the tappets, cheers Nick. There doesn't look like much left in the engine bay once the head's off from ya photo!
-
Cheers kilokilla but the clutch is only 3mnths old so should be ok, i'm not that much of a hooligan in it! Any suggestions for the head?
-
Don't know if youv'e been following the 'Intermittent splutter' thread, but your problem is exactly the same as ni-golf's by the sound of it. He changed the plugs and leads and now runs perfect, maybe worth checking them, unless you changed them recently?
-
Mine has just gone and yes there will be a lot of power loss and white smoke . Keep an eye on your header tank and monitor how much, if any, coolant its using. Mine sounds as if its running on three cylinders. At first mine was blowing coolant out of the overflow and eventually started spewing it out of the exhaust. Not to worry you tho! Does sound like an electrical problem .

Don't talk to me about bad luck mate! I must have been Satan himself in a former life and killed puppies just for a laugh. ~

intermittant "splutter" in low revs

Glad to hear it Alun! On the positive side, I was expecting to have to wait about a fortnight to get my car sorted, but when I phoned on Saturday they said if I wasn't using the car to bring it down on Tuesday and they'd be able to start it that day. I'll probably have it back by next weekend, hopefully. BREATHING FIRE AGAIN!!! By the way, did you get my pm? Sos for the late reply mate. Jim -
My car is going in for a new head gasket next.I'll get the top tensioner changed while its in bits. Just wondering if there are any other jobs worth doing while the heads off? It has 92k on the clock. Thanx

cranks but takes ages to fire...
jb9999 replied to katconcarne's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Another test you can try is, after you have cranked it over (making sure it doesn't start) take a spark plug out. Firstly it should be wet off the unburnt fuel, if its dry that could indicate a fuel problem. If its wet, dry it off and plug it back into the lead. Rest the plug on something metal to earth it where you can see it and crank the engine over to see if you have a spark at the plug. -
intermittant "splutter" in low revs
jb9999 replied to ni-golf's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
I really hope not 1st VR, but I got the warning signs on thursday. Car turned into a cloud factory, pissing fluids out of the exhaust, emptied the header tank in 10 miles, shit load of maayo under the oil filler cap and oil contamination.Catagoric head gasket destruction! If your anywhere near Durham Goth you will probably be able to see the flames from York especially once I start pissing on them! Then again I now know whats wrong with me car and have it booked in for tuesdy for repairs. Feel as if a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. In fact I'm going to get really pissed , righ -
