  1. Cheers Jay.If its not the head think I'll try what you say and flush and change the coolant. Might also change the thermostat as well. Saw a one on a website that opened up sooner, about 160deg F,to drop the engine temperature and see if that makes a difference to the coolant coming out of the overflow. If it's not the head gasket that is.
  2. Thanks for that tip about the chains jay will pass it on to whoever does the head, if its the head. There's no signs of mixing on the dipstick, the coolant in header is still blue. There was a small amount of dark brown gunge on the filler cap but I put that down to the previous owner mainly using it for short inner city journeys. What colour would the gunge be if its the head gasket? Also can't see any obvious signs of leakage from the engine or hoses apart from under the header tank were it drips out of the overflow, but hasn't been overfilled! Used it for work other day and coolant in the mi
  3. Is changing the head gasket a straight forward head off, head back on job,or is it more complicated? Do you have to take the gearbox out as well for access to the upper timing chain? Changed the header tank valve and still losing coolant. Got it booked in on Saturday to be tested, just need a rough idea of how big a job it is so I can start an argument over how much labour they charge.Bandits.Always look on the bright side of life? !sad ~
  4. Yeah, your right there. The blokes in the parts dept at the dealers I use should be working for Remploy fixing shopping trolleys.
  5. Was it at a garage or a private trader? garages do charge more. I bought mine two weeks ago for £2800, private with fvwsh, 90K on the clock and leather interior. Its on a P plate as well, mint condition apart from a few stone chips on the bumper. Jimbo
  6. VW didn't have one in stock and would have to transfer it from another dealer.Europarts had one and Iwas desperate as coolant was spewing out all over!Should get six month out of this one before it explodes.
  7. Think you would be better off putting a new header tank on than a second hand one. they are not expensive, I've just put a new one on mine. It was £24 for the tank and a fiver for the cap from Eurocarparts. Cheap as chips! Jimbo
  8. Howdo, I was wondering if anyone had the Carbonio(think thats right?) carbon fiber cold air induction kit fitted and if it was any good? Was looking at it on the awesome gti website and looked really good when under the bonnet, had some good stats to back it up as well. It' quite expensive though think it was £160 plus the VAT, but if it's a humdinger it's money well spent Jim
  9. Cheers Nick. I'll try changing the cap before I condemn the head gasket then. If it doesn't cure it at least I've got a new cap!!! How many miles has yours got on it? Mine has just gone over the 92K, which is not a lot really for a dub. The GTi I part ex'd for it had 145K on the clock and it was sweet as a nut and the Audi sport before that had nearly the same mileage as the USS Enterprise and the engine on that was mint! The cap on it is probably the one it left the factory with by the looks of it,so may well need changing. I'll try and see what happens. Thanx again Nick. Jim the G
  10. Thanx muchly for that Kat. Will a cylinder compression test give the same result if i can't get the coolant pressure tested locally? Hope its just the cap!
  11. I have just noticed in the last couple of weeks that my vr is loosing coolant. It is my first one(vr that is) and a tad concerned to say the least! It looks to be coming from the overflow hole on the expansion tank. If it was overheating I would understand but the temperature never goes over 90 degrees. There is no water in the oil and vice versa and no trails of white smoke from the exhaust when you accelerate, however hard. Has anyone had this problem before and know the cure? Any help for a novice owner would be much appreciated. Jim the concerned
