Supercharging with 264 Cams ?
FishWick replied to VRTrickster's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
I wouldn't bother Trickster. Mine makes 290 with the standard cams. I'd go for 248s personally. Only 10hp more at the top end, if that, but they do give a good midrange punch. -
They're only a few quid from the dealers. Or just use a bit of ali plate, dead easy to make. 4mm thick required IIRC. Or you can do it by eye as the slots will be level with the head when correct, if not, you're 180 deg out.

Any bosch dealer can get them in the UK. You might need the Bosch part number though, which VF kindly grind off. If you don't know the part number, you need 16 0hm ones around 310cc.

vag com diagnostocs Results - help and advise please
FishWick replied to 6potmkII's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
ECU terminal 30 is indeed the live feed and every time you disconnect the battery or pull the ECU plug, it will store it as a fault code. Nothing to worry about. My OBD2 ran like cack when it was running too lean, coughing, missing, etc etc So I'd suspect the MAF as the primary cause. -
Glader I think. I've seen a MK2 16V with two G-laders aswell! I think assymetric bi-turbo is the way to go.

VW have already launched the Golf with the 1.4 "twin charge" engine. It's quite a nice unit by all accounts. It's primary objective was to get the same output as a decent 2.0, but from a much smaller, lighter unit, therefore saving fuel......but....I bet it can be boosted up :-) You'd be better off with one small turbo and a larger one to be honest. Until proper electric superchargers are invented, it will be difficult to implement on a VR! I think it was the Lancia Delta S4 that first did super and turbo charging, but the engine never made it into their road going Deltas as it was too hardc

Don't forget this warmer weather isn't doing us any favours. You can easily lose 30hp when the charger is really hot, especially when sucking in hot summer air.

Anyone know how much an OBD2 throttle is?
FishWick replied to FishWick's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
I hogged it right out mate. The red line shows roughly where the ramp would normally be. It makes heck of a difference to throttle response, especially low down. But when the engine heats up, the fuelling goes too lean, so I need a proper remap. I'll use it again when I get Vince to do my MAP sensor remap. -

Cheers. I checked BBA Reman and they list a Siemens part, but the one I need is a VDO item. Couldn't find SPB parts on ebay either, so dealer it had to be at £279+VAT :-( Turns out the throttle was OK in the end but what caused the rough running was me boring it out! It seems grinding down the ramp has a massive impact on air flow, making the engine run too lean on part throttle. I wasn't expecting such a huge improvement in flow, but a remap is required before I can use it, LOL! So back to standard throttle. Moral of the story, don't feck about with things that work!! It'll be a £300 m -
I used one from Revotec.co.uk mainly because it says "Supercharger" on the guage, rather than "Boost" or "Turbo". Thought that was a nice touch. It reads to 20psi, which is also handy as that's the V9 charger's max boost IIRC.

Never really officially recorded any times in my VR with a schrick and 268s but it kept with a BMW 330Ci all the way from 0 to 155 :-) Well, the Rado pulled ahead at the start and Bimmer eventually caught up and levelled out. The 330ci does 60 in the low 6s if I remember rightly, so that should give you some idea. Also raced a Honda S2000 with the supercharger kit and beat that to 60 aswell, and they're in the mid 5s to 60. I spoke to John Malik at Stealth who has a 360hp 1.8t Corrado about 0-60s etc as he's done a few runs at the pod and he reckons on mid 5s being about right for a stage 2 V

Cheers chaps. Gave alpina527@aol.com a call and he's got one for tomorrow collection. He's bored it out aswell, nice one :-) -

Mine is goosed. Throttle position sensor and idle adaptation limit errors in VAG-COM. Car keeps cutting out and hunting at idle - when it does actually run ^o) Feckin thing cut out on me mid roundabout manouvre today, not good. :@ As they're sealed units, you can't service them, so it's a chunky bill for a recon or new one. Anyone ever replaced one? How much? Cheers -
You'll love it without a MAF mate. Just runs so much more consistently. My mate dumped the ISV aswell as the MAF on his Charged OBD1 Rado and it runs and idles fine.

1 bar of boost is all we need and should have enough resolution, -30 vac to 15psi IIRC. Deleting the MAF was not related to the O2 sensor, indeed that fella is doing the bulk of the trimming now that the MAF has gone walkies. The actual reasons for losint it were:- 1) Output voltage exceeding 5V 2) Constant hold/cold running causing shunting at certain revs on part throttle. 3) Stalling 4) Oil fouling 5) Water contamination 6) Unable to hold a particular fuel cell steady with it connected on some cars Oh and the small matter of saving between £60 and £350 each time the maf pops...which isn'

Sorry mate, I missed that. The gearbox mount is just a standard one from a MK2 diesel, but I have since found the Vibratechnics one to give vastly better shifts. Quick update on the Brakes. After the brakes had bedded in, I felt the supplied Ferodo DS2500 pads didn't have a particularly good initial bite unless they were really hot. So after some research, I stuck some Pagid RS15 ("Grey") race pads in and they are unbelievable!! Although they are race pads, they don't have any of the usual race pad pitfalls, such as no bite until they a million degrees in them etc and they don't sand your di

Yep, MAP sensing is potentially the way to go. Losing the MAF also loses 10 mapping cells, which we can reuse again with a MAP. A VAG 2 bar MAP can probably be used and Vince has found a suitable 12V-5V voltage regulator as the MAF power supply is too high for a MAP. I should be getting mine done fairly soon. The other down side of MAFless as some of you may have discovered already, is a slight lack of throttle response now that the weather is warming up. My MAFless map was done in the Winter and without the MAF to dynamically trim the fuelling, she's running slightly rich at the moment. Th

In theory should be OK. I wouldn't run any more than a stage 1 though (6psi). You'll need a good map and water injection to keep detonation at bay. The R32 is 11:1 also, which can run up to 6.5psi on the standard compression, but it has variable valve timing to help optimise the dynamic compression ratio though.....

best leads for around the £90 mark?
FishWick replied to 6potmkII's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
You can get the dealer ones for around £95 if you haggle :-) I've tried loads of diffent leads on the VR and they are the best for construction quality and life. -
Sorry but the OBD2 throttle plate is actually smaller than OBD1.

Christ I thought he asked about a Supercharger AND a turbo there for a minute before I re-read it! Now that would be quite something!

The pulley bolt isn't on tight, so it might be worth nipping it up a bit to those that haven't fitted there's yet. Dub25, I fitted mine myself mate, Raj just had my car for a while to investigate the fuelling but never had any issues with the pulley. The only problem I've had with the charger is the oil feed leaking a bit but I managed to correct that. Seems to be a permanent sweat of oil around the charger inlet throat too....are the seals known to weep slightly? Engine oil doesn't seem to be going down though, so it's a very tiny leak if it is one!
-
Shouldn't worry about it, the 312s aren't massively heavy, you want to weigh some R32 brakes, they ARE heavy! Keep an eye on ebay, AP racing sets appear on there from time to time.

Yeah the 280 setup has a nasty long pedal. I remember quite a few years ago when I had MK2 Golfs, I test drove a Golf VR6 for a mate and I over shot a junction when pressing the pedal in the VR6 the same amount I would in the MK2. Absolutely diabolical brakes for a performance car. Maybe the 288 setup has a different servo / Master cylinder? I'm happy with the pedal I've got now, could maybe do with a bit more life in the first 10mm of travel though, but otherwise it's very firm. 4x4, hmmmm, not sold on that. I'd rather get a car that's already got it fitted! It only gives you more tracti
