  1. i'd second cel-direct. they were very helpfull over the phone and in person. Also try bass-junkies.com. They tend to have a lot of end-of-line alpine stuff going cheap. I found them to be not as helpful as Cel, but still ok
  2. Do you know the local authority where you think you were caught? I think that the dates and routes which mobile speed cameras operate need to be published - you could check the local authorities website to check if they were operating on that road on that date.

    Rusty VR's

This is a common problem with Golfs in general. Is it directly under where there is a join in the rubber seal? Salty water pools in the join in the rubber. Ive got rust on both doors, one sides even got a hole & its a R plate. I bet there are a few others on here with the same problem. If you havent got holes its ideal to sort out yourself cos the repair will be well hidden.
  4. Thanks for the replies. I think i'll ring a garage for this one.
  5. Sounds like i have a problem with Cyl 1 or 6. AA said it sounded like a broken valve spring. My question - if i take the top of the engine off to have a look, does it just pop back on using the same bolts etc? (can you tell i'm not a mechanic?) Cars currently about 10 miles from home, its got a cracked headlight as well so its got condensation in there - looks like its crying, as am I.
  6. Ive got the same black rubber type thing stuck in the same place, '98 R. So nothing to worry about (unless theres 3 of us with the same hidden repair!)
  7. Totally agree Mk4 drivers are the worst for this - normally a sales rep aswell. (no offence to any reps on here!)
  8. There's a steering rack going on ebay at the moment, could be worth a go. Item number: 2483533632

Money is an issue - like always. Its just i need a car & in the short term its cheaper to buy a banger and run it then repairing the VR

    Breaking VR6

I saw this yesterday. The actual car with no damage was for sale on ebay at the same time as the above ad - two different seller though. i'm saying it was the same car as the pics were the same. Just thought i'd mention it before anyone parts with cash.
  11. Well it finally happened. My engine is making so much noise (not the good kind) that i cant bear to drive it any more. Bottom end problems i think / been told. Looks like a total strip down for the engine. Well and truly gutted. I am soooo glad i recently moved from living 3 miles from work to 32 miles from work Well thats enough feeling sorry for myself. Jus gonna have to buy a car for £100 this weekend to see me thru till i sell/get mine fixed. Ive seen a beaut of a Opel Manta for £95 with 3 month road tax, or for an extra £15 i can get my self into a Rover 100 'Tahiti' with 9 mon
  12. Well done mate, if its the same plume im thinking of - by the pub with the same name - then good on ya. Got stung there when i had my mk2.
  13. Isn't that in wales? i'd guess at 150 miles, or £45 there and back!
  14. acf8181 - i know what you mean, suprised they didn't ask if it was horse drawn or mechanically powered aswell. Pituff - im insured with Equity Redstar through Adrian Flux. Anyway, problem solved, spotted another VR6 in the car park at work, left a note for the owner on his window, surprisingly enough he called me up and gave me the answer - 125/70 R16. VR owners - dont you just love 'em.
  15. I think they want a tyre size as well as the radius. My insurance have asked me to fill out a 'Modified car report', and there is a section on wheels/tyres. Other questions include "are your tyres radial or ply, and does your car have a brake servo?" It seems overkill I know, seeing as ive only got an induction kit on the thing.
  16. My insurance company want to know the size of my spare wheel. Its a spacesaver type. Only problem is that it isnt in my boot at the moment as its on a mates car who i cant contact to find out. Anyone have a clue what size it is? Sorry for posting this stoopid question.
  17. Thanks for the advice guys. i think i'll have a go at the sump this weekend, as it needs some new oil anyway - thanks alivr6. AS for vince not being able to tell if it was top or bottom, it was only a cursory look and he did say that there were some other noises present - aux water pump and alternator bearing to name two. I dont think its piston slap, as the knocking is present in all gears at all speeds - especially when easing off the gas pedal. Im going to spend the rest of the week praying to anyone that will listen that my bearings are ok, as 12 hours labour doesnt tally up with my bank
  18. Just been to Stealth Racing to get an opinion of a knocking noise coming from my engine. Vince said that it sounded like the bottom end - ie big end bearings. He said in the first instance that the sump should be taken off and the bearings inspected for wear/damage. If found to be OK then it could be a problem with valve springs(?), or a number of other top end problems. Thing is that he's booked till August . Im thinking about taking the sump off myself and having a look - only problem is that I havent done this before & dont really know what a damaged bearing / crank looks like.
  19. Trawling the web, I found this quality Passat with a VR6 Turbo Syncro conversion. I like the third movie the best, i'm sure the engine is trying to rip itself out of the passats shell, especially when it gets in to 2nd gear. http://www.rstuning.de/Bilder_Video/Bilder_VW/body_bilder_vw.html
  20. Does anyone know if you can (relatvely) easily access the big end bearing shells by taking the sump off, or is it a bit more involved? I was told that you could on 4-cly VW engines - i'm just not sure about the V6. Any help appreciated.
  21. When i've had the aircon on for a while, then park up, and then drive away a few hours later without AC i get very damp/humid air coming out of the vents, and it stinks - similar to when you leave your washing in the machine for a few days. Is this normal?
  22. Ahhh, so that black cylinder thing with all the wires is the engine loom plug. I thought it was that which was makin a wierd whiring noise. Cheers Tommy.
  23. Sorry to H/J with a question.... but where is the aux water pump and what does it look like?
  24. Gutted! It is a bit of a ball acher to sort all the x-overs etc out.
  25. Ive just got a standard treble setting, ive tried them but still harsh. Cant put more power to the sub as its at a level where it sounds good, any more power and it'll just fart away. Ive been told to cover the tweeter with a thin bit of material to help soften them up - could be worth a pop.
