  1. It should be on the side of the rocker cover , side nearest the air filter. Or apparently near the timing chain covers here as shown in pic Rich
  2. Bought the Headgasket set ( headgasket, rocker cover gasket and valve stem seals ) plus 1 set of headbolts , all in £145 from Stealth Racing ( either Victor Reinz or Elring ). I asked about piston rings and roughly £20 + VAT per cylinder, so depends how im feeling !
  3. on second thoughts i imagine i would need to change the ECU ? so better to change everything over to obd2 if im doing that
  4. This sounds like a plan as OBD2 maf sensors are much cheaper and im pretty sure OBD1 sensors will become obsolete at some point , i was thinking that without cutting and splicing i could make up a short bit of loom to connect to the existing plug?Im having a look now to see how you wire the 6 obd1 wires into the four needed for obd2 then i will just need a new inlet hose but i dont know if the obd2 inlet hose will attach to the obd1 throttle body ? cheers for the reply mate!
  5. Update - After calling GSF , Eurocarparts , volkspares, AVS car parts and others I tried stealth racing and they are sorting me out on monday with a Victor Reinz headgasket set for roughly £80 ! pretty much half the price of Vw. I tried TPS for piston rings and they come in at £204 so undecided yet, will talk to guys at stealth racing next week and see.
  6. Hi , Im going to be changing the headgasket on my 94 vr6 but getting the parts gathered before hand. Going to do a compression test to see if its worth doing the piston rings at the same time and if so i guess VW will be the only supplier for these if they still sell them? Victor reinz is the way to go for the headgasket as ive read, if it came as kit with the head bolts other seals and gaskets that would be useful but cant seem to find one anywhere! Also with valve stem seals are the ones which come with the headgasket set ok or do you need to buy these seperately from VW to ensure t
  7. ok cheers, I called VW and the parts listed as obsolete now ??!! i might just have to go bosch aftermarket
  8. Hi , it seems that i need to replace the 20 year old mass airflow sensor on my vr6 as its not working properly anymore but i wanted to know if this is a part that should be bought from a vw dealer or can you save money and buy elswhere ? I know its going to cost an arm and a leg! I know with some parts like HT leads its best to go to vw but was'nt sure about the MAF
  9. My golf vr6 has a persisting coolant leak were the cooling system seems to over pressurise and after a good drive there is coolant left around the seam of the header tank. The car doesn't overheat but gets slightly over halfway on the temp guage even though the fans kick in. Any ideas ?
  10. Its on my automatic golf vr6. For a while i have noticed a hesition when accelerating in the vr6 before it picks up , and sometimes when coming to a hault the idle will dip, if i take the strain of the engine by putting it into neutral this stops it. i was thinking it may be the crankshaft sensor , any ideas ? so far i have replaced the spark plugs with new NGKs and cleaned the MAF with electrical contact cleaner but no difference. 11. just tried chris Knott they said I will have to be 19 before they can insure me so looks like im going to have to wait another year and a bit
  12. Cheers , yeah I know! will give them a shout tomorrow , tried HIC and was told they wouldn't insure me until I was 19 but they said its worth having the ownership in my name until then as it will mean my premium will be lower when I go to insure it .
  13. Hi , I'm the owner of two golf vr6's, an auto I got given for nothing and a gti I converted to a manual vr6. I have worked on these for the past few years and put a fair bit of money into each from my part time work, both are standard bar the exhaust systems ( both have magnex cat back systems ) The manual golf vr6 is coming up for renewal I paid £240 last year to insure it under my dads name and was able to be added onto the policy for 1 week as a learner driver for £40 which was great. However since passing my test back in April last year they haven't been able to repeat this and add me on
  14. so is buying oem hoses the only option? I wanted to get new hoses because some are getting quite thin where the jubilee clips go and no longer fit tightly.
  15. yeah because the auto boxes have a cooler ontop of them
  16. I have been looking for a set of samco hoses for myt 1994 golf vr6 automatic and can only seem to find ones to fit a manual vr6 , do they make sets for the autos?
  17. its actually touching the pick up ring really don't know why though ? I will get some pictures
  18. yea this is normal when I changed all my lines I got the same kind of gap between the union as shown in your pic
  19. After replacing the front wheel bearing along with a new Meyle hub and abs ring I refitted the abs sensor and it seems to be really close to the abs ring. It is virtually touching the abs ring. I read the distance doesn't particularly matter, but It seems stupidly close do i need to get a bit of distance from the abs ring by refitting the sensor? or any suggestions Rich
  20. ok cheers guys, its about 10mm short of the position I marked before taking the axle off. I will loosen the other side and get all the bolts started, then use a pry bar against the rear axle and the mounting bracket to try and get it into position before tightening up the bolts. I take it that its important to get the mounting bracket into exactly the same position as before ?
  21. My vr6 is a 1994 with a brake compensator so when replacing the rear axle bushes I had to also remove the mounting brackets ( which are secured by three bolts ) Before removing I sprayed around the bracket in red paint to ensure I fit the axle back on in exactly the same position. however having levered one side into its original position and torqueing the three bolts up I am stuck on the other side. it needs to move towards the outer edge of the car but I am struggling to lever the bracket into the correct position . Any ideas and is this normal ? worried about knackering the threads because
  22. just pressed out the old bearings and pressed in new genuine vw bearings ( £42 each !!! ) using a hydraulic press I borrowed however when I got home I realised the hub flange ( the part the wheel bolts to with an abs ring attached to the back ) needed pressing through the centre of the bearing. I thought I could slowly hit the flange into place using a wooden mallet however the back of the bearing fell out and the inner race of the bearing stuck to the hub flange. I need to replace the bearing now but for next time how do I get the hub flange into place without the same happening again as I
  23. I am running dimpled and grooved ebc disks with green stuff pads on the front and I have noticed how poor the braking is when cold. Im guessing this will be down to the green stuff pads ? If so I have read that you cant really go wrong with oem pads but for an upgrade what about the ferodo ds2500 pads are they a straight forward fit ? only problem im having is that they don't have the type with built up wear indicators that I need do they ?
