the vr6 seems to crunch into reverse from cold however once warm its fine, only occasionally catching slightly. gearbox has had fresh 75w90 synthetic oil but still getting the crunch from cold possibly related - it has clutch judder so pressure plate/ friction plate is on the way out any ideas?

managed to clip the drivers side tail light on my golf but cant seem to find a replacement , make is LUCID, part number is 01-441-1916L-C any ideas?

Already bought a mk3 headgasket unfortunately ! But it's voctor reinz so should be good. Starting to Question whether or not I should do piston rings aswell , it's not burning oil but the cylinders look polished and I want the engine to be spot on after this
-
Well engine and gearbox are out and on the stand, gearbox removed then engine stripped down. Cylinder head off for skimming at machine shop , couple of extra parts ordered like sump gasket, oil filter, inlet temp sensor. Headgasket was blowing on cylinder 1, not suprised with its condition !! Cam shafts and bearings all in good condition, Starting to think this may make a fairly noticeable difference to the performance More pics to follow

Just removed the engine and gearbox on my VR6 and with the car on axle stands I went to test the ball joints wheel bearings etc for play. By lifting the wheel upwards i can get 1-2 inches of movement where the strut assembely moves in the turret ( from the engine bay you can see the top mounts moving 1-2 inches upwards ) . Is this just the design because i cant see how you would get this play from normal wear and tear!

dyno mat would probably do the job nicely come to think of it, better than a bit of tape ! I think it's heater box removal unless you can split the box inside the car after removing dash I will let you know as I'm doing it very soon !

How can you get the tension of the chains from Vag com ? Never heard of this so just interested

alot of people do this , i converted a mk3 golf 16v gti to a vr6 no problems. The gti has a cable clutch so just remove this and place a rubber grommet in the hole in the bulkhead. A hydraulic clutch is easily fitted as on the gti bulkhead you will find a blanking plate held on by two nuts. remove this and fit you clutch master cylinder. will need vr6 driveshafts but not hubs as gti is 5 stud aswell. any questions just ask its not too bad at all, all together i would say its easiest and cheapest to get a donor vr6 and a decent gti.

best bet is to Call TPS and get some oem valve seals
-
not sure how much they are from vw but best bet would be something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/111612291586?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&rlsatarget=&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

Out of interest what are you using to replace the foam ?
-
Yeah I only get slightly warm air and it's because all of the foam has come off the heater control doors ! Going to replace it with some HVac tape someone recommend using
-
Engine is coming out end next week for headgasket and cylinder head rebuild, will also be stripping the dashboard out to retrim the heater control flaps. Wishbone bushes are being replaced for the solid Audi TT versions. Few little bits i have got so far, BMC CDA is my other golf!

Thought i would start a little build thread for my Golf vr6 to keep track of it. Its a car which has been in the family since new so well aware of its history etc. It ended up in a sorry state, sat outside a college of further education for many years and was ready to be scrapped but i managed to get in there just before it made its way down there! Work so far includes: Heater matrix Both water pumps Thermostat Coolant hoses Power steering pump Magnex exhaust sytem (CAT BACK) Lambda sensor Spark plugs Ht leads Powerflex Rear beam bushes Brake lines OEM Front hubs and bearings Rear

It's very tedious, not all that bad though! id seriously recommend changing the foam on the panels inside the ducting whilst your at it as I'm having to strip down the dash again for this
-
yeah from memory the last time i replaced mine it was around the £30 mark from VW but would be worth a call. The stainless steel versions look like a great modification, as soon as the one on my vr6 goes i will be replacing it with one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-12V-VR6-2-8-2-9-stainless-steel-crack-pipe-water-pipe-for-mk3-Golf-Corrado-/151686953569?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item23513f3a61 There is a company that also sells cast alloy thermostat housings but i honestly wouldn't bother as they are ridiculously priced at around £150, you can get an OEM VW thermostat housing whi

cant think of anything particular just do a thorough check for leaks, particulary around the oil cooler , thermostat housing and crack pipe as these are much more easily replaced with the engine out and rubber seals dont cost much !

sump gaskets on a 2.9 vr6 - sealant or no sealant?
rsweeney replied to paceo's topic in General Chat
from memory there are two types of gasket depending on the year, the early type which had a thin paper gasket with shorter bolts or the later types which used a rubber gasket and longer bolts. If it was me i'd use something like well seal with either type of gasket to make sure they seal properly http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stag-Wellseal-Gasket-Jointing-Compound-100ml-The-Best-for-Rover-K-Series-/141654413847?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20fb42d217 -

Going to attempt replacing the material on the golfs headliner as its dirty and fallen in places, has anyone else done this successfully ? Thinking of using black suede as Alcantara is out of the budget at the moment!! was told to carefully remove old material, scrape back to the backing then once clean fit the suede. Any tips really appreciated !!!
