  1. Lead i have is off ebay, says autonostics on it and i bought seperatley from the Vag-com disc. Found a post on here saying that someone had to cut off the plastic round the outside of one of these leads to get it to connect properly, so mite try that.
  2. Deffo not the pump, coming from inside the engine somewhere. Yea i know i shouldnt really be driving it but couldnt wait once i got it out of the garage, got a bit excited! lol I was planning on putting a few miles on it to see if the noise goes away before i pull it to bits again. The reason i thought the timing may be out is cos i thought the noise may have been valves touching the pistons slightly, doesnt seem like that though if its getting quieter sometimes.

  5. I got vag com of ebay a while ago and installed it but never used it. Went to hook it up to the car today and when i select the port and try to test it i get a message saying Port Status: Ok Inetrface: Not Found! and i cant connest with the car. Theres a red light on the cable that i have and it comes on when connected to the car and the ignition turned on. Any ideas??
  6. I looked on the crank pully when i had the engine out of the car and didnt see any mark but i maybe missed it, i'll check again. Doesnt really sould like a tappet, and i didnt replace them, but its probably worth considering that aswell. Got the car out of the garage and took it for a bit of drive today (only a couple of miles, dont have any power steering fluid yet) and when i came back the noise was pretty much gone. Then started it up again later on and it was back, but not a bad as it was when i first started her up after putting the engine back in. Id forgot how much i like driving the vr
  7. Ive just finished rebuilding my engine and theres a bit of a ticking noise from the engine now when its running, possibly valve timing out a tooth. Its running fine, just noisey, although ive not tried driving it yet, and the noise seems to be getting quieter the longer i leave it running. What i need to know is where to find the timing mark for the crankshaft. I took the plug out from the top of the gearbox and rotated the engine but couldnt see any marks on the clutch, but the clutch was replaced (genuine VAG) when the engine was fitted and was different fron the old one.   8. I would think the immobiliser would cut the injectors aswell as the spark to prevent damage to the cat but not sure. Worth looking into tho.
  9. I got a used engine to strip for parts to rebuild mine with and it was pretty rough. Timing chain guides were in bits and the big end bearings had a few marks on them. It had 120k on it though so i expected it to be a bit rough. And i had to pay £350 + vat for it but came with 2 month guarantee.
  10. Not sure. Mines an obd2 so dont know much about the obd1. Just read my last post again and i made a complete arse of explaining that, should be the other way round, sorry. And terrible spelling!!

Take the lead that goes into the centre of the dizzy off and hold it a few mm away from an earth (unpainted and not rusty bolt or bit of metal on the engine or body) and get someone to crank the engine. If you dont get a spafk the it isnt the coil thats faulty, and if you do then it most likley will be the coil but not definatley. The coil can be checked by checking resistances with a multimeter but i dont know what its ment to be.
  12. Im in the middle of an engine overhaul at the moment and went to put the crank back in tonight but theres a problem with the new bearing shells being different from the old ones. The ones that came out of the engine had two different halves, the half in the block has a groove along the middle of the bearings and there was i hole in the groove about 10mm long to allow oil to pass from the oil gallery in the block to between the crank and shell. And the half in the cap had no groove or hole in it. The new ones i have been given have the groove in both halves but there is no hole through to the o
  13. What makes garage 2 so much more expensive?? are they doing the valve guides aswell? If so i'd go for them as its a more complete job on the head. And i dont think garage 1 will be taking the head off either, tou can do the stem seals without taking it off
  14. Anyone kno if these can fit a mk3 vr6. And if they can what size wheels would be needed. Ive got 17s at the mo but am thinking about a set of d90s at some point.
  15. Ive got same size wheels/tyres with same offset on standard suspension and dont get any rubbing even when ive got 5 in the car. Mine doesn't have plastic arches tho, dont know if that makes any differance
  16. Just had another look at the parts i got from vw and the tensioner for the bottom chain comes as part of the bottom cahin guide.
  17. Its a m12 spline bit, not TORX. Its a fairly common tool, should be able to get one no probs from any tool store. Im in the middle of stripping my engine at the mo and took the head bolts out yesterday.

I am in the process of rebuilding my engine and was going to to replace all timing chains and guides and tensioners I ordered a load of parts from a vw dealer but when i got them there was no tensioners, just the guides and chains. From reading other posts on here i know the upper tensioner should be replaced but what about the lower tensioner, should i relplace it aswell? and how much does it cost? And i'll try and post a picture of my upper chain guide, it came off in three bits (and no i didnt break it), anyone seen that happen before??
  19. Is there any oil in the expansion tank. Chances are if the headgasket is gone and water is getting in the oil, there will be oil in the water. As craggsy said, could just be condensation in the oil.

  21. I thought the windows opening and closing was some sort of fault when i first bought my vr! Kindov anoying that the sunroof doesnt work like this too!
  22. Found out today that the engine i found is an obd1 on 126k miles. Think im going to get it, not sure tho if im going to use the whole engine, or use it for parts for my engine. Cheers for all the help. Any suggestions for any mods while ive got the engine out and stripped. Thinking about supercharging in the future so any mods would have to take that into consideration. Also anything else i should replace. Planning on doing headgasket, valve stem seals, re-grind valves, replace all seals etc, chains, and possibly piston rings.   24. Ive abandoned the idea of a stroker kit, too much ££ for not much gain. Found an engine for £350. Not sure yet if its OBD1 or 2, or what the mileage is but im going to get more info tomorrow. Can anyone tell me if an OBD1 engine will fit OBD2 car (using the bare engine and manifolds etc from my car. And i assume the crank wont fit from an OBD1 engine because of the different chains, right??
