Revs drop off then pick up again?
gavinvr6 replied to retr0dreaming's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
you dont say if its an obd1 or 2, if its an early ish obd1 with idle control valve try cleaning this out, if any electrical circuit is used this is used to increase the revs slightly to compensate, simple way is pull the fuse for the seats if you beleive this to be the cause and see if the idle settles, or just clean the isv, there is a how-to thread on here explaining exactly what to do -
a vr should hammer all the way to 130+, mine hit 145 (speedo reading) on a private test track of course while chasing a supercharged jag, needless to say he was not impresed lol, anyway in 5th gear at 30mph the car will feel slugish, like a 1.4. it wont come alive till 3200rpm, but a healthy vr6 will pull from 30 to 130+ in 5th. as per previous comments get it on vagcom, it could be something simple as a knackered sensor.

Girl in need of help
gavinvr6 replied to vr6princess's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
any change to manufacturers specifications is classed as a 'modification', even if it is just using adjustable shocks, since the vehical never came with these it has been modified from oe spec, besides my coilovers cost 20 quid to declare so why not do it? its cheaper than having a void policy if you smash ya motor without telling them things have been changed. anyway back to the original question, the simple answer is check the for sale boards, the guys on here are very passionate about their cars and are always changing parts and if you keep your eyes open you could pick up a used set of qua -
that sounds fine to me, i start at silly o'clock in the mornings and finish when i get home basically (usually 10pm onwards) this week so dont even have time to scratch me nuts lol, i on standard 8-5 shift next week so will be availible most evenings

if you dont mind a harsh ride you can get coilovers for under 200 quid but they are quite harsh, i know im on a tight budget and now cant aford to get them changed for decent ones lol, plus you can sit it in the weeds with coilovers, as with fixed platform ones your stuck at set hieghts. personally id say save an extra couple of months and buy some decent coilovers -
guys unfortunalty i missed yet another rr day due to work and a sick vr, but i just want to know what sort of ball park figures i can expect from the mods ive fitted, i know each part would give me a little with some being more beneficial than most, and the total gains would out perform each item but i just wondered if anyone has similar mods who has had a rr and what sort of figures i should make with this lot fitted. obviously i know im not going to make massive gains but am curious as to how much extra i should be making the engine is a replacement obd2 with 50k on it and is in good condit

cant argue with that, well im working on shift this week so wont be free till monday evening if thats any use to you, unless your free in the mornings till about half ten 11

just the car in your pic, especially the plate. reminds me of a lovely vr my old mechanic used to have in and out of his garage. thornton heath is sunny south london, garage goes by the name eurotec. but im guessing if you need to ask where is then probably isnt your one lol

knocking noise and binding brakes
gavinvr6 posted a topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
the long and short of it is mot time is due in a couple of months and ive got another knocking noise coming from the front suspension. 6 months ago i changed the arb drop links for new ones and when the coilies went on 12 months ago new top mounts were fitted. when the car is standing still and i try bouncing the front of the car the noise is coming from the drivers side, the top mount has a few mill of play (and i have replacements just to be safe) but it feels more bottom of the suspension. could it be i need new arb links again (cars lowered 80mm) or would i be looking more towards arb bus -
craggsy, i recognise your motor from somewhere. do you happen to know a certain vw mechanic in thornton heath?
-
i got a 5 door as it was cheaper to buy and they are also cheaper to insure and after test driving 3's and 5's you really wont tell much of a difference when it comes to handling about town, and once coilies and poly's are on i'd say it would be better than a standard 3 door. where in pompey you at fella? im in havant and would be happy to let you look around mine to help you make your mind up. after all everyone needs to experiance a vr in their life time and if i can help out for the good of the 6pot brigade and vr60c then who am i to argue lol
-
also may i add that you would be better to fit the throttle body from the 2.9 then polish/knife edge that instead of polishing your one. or the early golf obd1 throttle body from a 2.8. when we swapped my mani and tb for 2.9 parts mines a 93 obd1 2.8, i noticed my throttle body was exactly the same size as the 2.9 one, even the mechanic was supprised it was fitted to my car as it was completely standard at the time

i've always used a sythetic 5/40

are these new style stickers or same silver/grey one i got with my member ship pack

cheers fella, looks like fun, do you know what time its gunna finish? as i wont be able to get there till evening.

does anyone know anything about a vw meet in hastings on sunday? a few friends have mentioned it to me but no-one seems to know where or when and i dont wanna just drive round and round hastings also does anyone know of any good things going on in portsmouth area?
-
this is bloody typical. i've just moved further away, london to portsmouth, and am getting into my new place during next week so got a lot to un pack, then i got my daughters birthday at the weekend. why oh why do these things always happen when i got no money or am pre-booked? who's planning these things? YOU NEED SHOOTING lol would bring my standard car. well mine's sort of standard its got 2.9 top end, filter and exhaust. and im sure the mechanic said its using a obd2 management, but mine is obd1 so thats questionable, (is that even possible) then again so is the work he does lol. im dying
-
im not to sure about doing that, i wouldnt knw how to adjust it, plus im sure mine is a cable change box,so would that still have a counter weight? if it does how would i adjust it?
-
ocasionally 2nd gear either gets stuck trying to up-change or wont go in completely. last time this happened the star gear i think it was called exploded out of the casing leavng me stuck on the m275 in portsmouth in rush hour with a trail of oil, cogs and chunks of casing. funny now i look back at the mess it made. now the idea is get it caught before it happens again, the last box had seen 120k so is not suprising, but this had a guaranteed 68 thou 4 thou ago, its only very ocasionally and predominantly if im giving it welly, now is this me missing the gear (im no nigel mansell) or is there

hmmmm i got a spare pair laying around somewhere, how light can i take the flywheel before it becomes to light, i've read of flywheels with 7lb taken from them or half the weight of stock. is it a case of the lighter the better or is to light dangerous? sorry for silly questions but if im gunna go this way i wanna get it right first time coz i cant afford to get another engine, im already on my second, lol.
-
would it be worth fitting a lightened and balanced flywheel on a n/a engine, i cant afford forced induction but want to make the engine a little more lively. would it be worth fitting one in conjunction with a lightened and balanced crank and some cams?
-
just as the title says folks, does it actually need it? mine was broken (oh and glued back together) by the spanner that fitted my replacement engine and i just replaced the pump with a length of copper pipe as it was leaking very badly
-
who was it that done the ubby for under a grand? and can that man gimme some advice. also can a charger be fitted for under a grand? i dont want monster power at the moment, just a bit more. say 250-270bhp.
-
guys is this a cheap vr turbo kit or 300 quids worth of worries? ive just been reading through someone's vrt for under 1 grand thread and was looking on ebay for parts and came across this, is it or is it not worth it? i could always swap the tubbby for something bigger at a later date, i just wondered if this would be a good starting point. i know nothing about forced induction and cant afford someone to do the work for me so some thing like this really catch's my attention http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Turbo-Kit-VW-GTI-GOLF-V6-VR6-Audi-A3-A4-TT-1-8T-RX7-RX8_W0QQitemZ190252585227QQcmdZViewItem?hash=
