  1. Thanks. When you say pressure tested do you mean have a compression test? The water pressure itself was tested and all is fine...no leaks at all even under pressure. It must have escaped when it became too hot through the expansion hole. There was only water under the tank and that area only. It is odd the noise only happened when I tried moving the car... not when revving it when stationary.
  2. Thanks for your reply. I couldn't see where the coolant escaped from exactly. I assume from the coolant tank itself through the lid 'hole'..certainly was around the area of the coolant tank. The strange metal grating noise seemed to come from the passenger side wheel on the left hand side of the car. The oil temp didn't go above 118c. Will this indicate that my engine itself 'should' be ok? Will a compression / leak down / block test eliminate the possibility of any problems? Could the strange noise be the water pump running dry?
  3. How quick or easy is it for The Phirm to do a compression test? Will that be the sure tell tale test to see if my engine has suffered any damage even slight damage?
  4. Hi Today was driving down the dual carriageway in my mark3 golf vr6 and my engine water temp hit max and some steam was coming from the bonnet..the red light on the dash board came on (the one on the very left which I assume is the water temp light which looks like a thermometer). Pulled into a layby straight away. I opened the bonnet and there was no water in the antifreeze tank. There was a strange metal grating noise too if I tried to move the car a foot or two. No noise at all if I revved the engine a bit while stationary. The oil temp had risen to 118c which I was told by the Phirm that
  5. Russ, what mods (if any) to your VR (mark3 golf I assume?) Nice one keeping up with it. I have no doubt it was the turbo you raced. I was actually going to buy one before I got my VR. I looked at the classic shape (the same as the one you encountered) which has a far better power to weight ratio than the later bug eyed and newer imprezas. I test drove a standard UK model one (the later classic shape with 215bhp) and I have to say it felt no quicker than my VR (which is lightly modded to around 200bhp). They would be quick off the line due to the 4wd but nothing in it once moving. Although a
  6. Hi A friend of mine has a vauxhall astra (N-reg). The air bag light stays permanently on - what could the cause be? Not sure how different the airbag system is on the astra but wondered if anyone on here might know. Thanks for any help. Matt
  7. A lightly modded VR with 205-210bhp should match the astra vxr. So with a charger you should easily beat it. No chance against the evo of the line (due to the mistu having 4wd) but once going you should be able to match the performance on the straights (depending on your state of tune - assuming you have over 300bhp)... you'll struggle keeping up round the bends though I suspect no matter what power you have (again due to the evo's 4wd set up)
  8. Who did the work on your car mate? Sounds as though the timing may be out. I had a serious lack of power in acceleration when I had my cams put back in incorrectly. Also if you go to a vr6 specialist get them to check your car on vag com (for free) to see if you have any sensor faults. Failing that it sounds as though the cams, or chains were put back incorrectly. Get the garage to do it all again for free if it turns out to be the timing as that can cost a serious amount of money to fix!
  9. Thanks guys for your replies. Eat This on here has a straight through exhaust, no cat no silencers. After a remap his car got 178bhp at the wheels! Some people on the vwvortex forum have said removing one of the mufflers/silencers will liberate a lot of power. Has anyone else on here got any comments or info? Cheers for any help.
  10. Take it to a good vr6 specialist (as opposed to main dealers!). Timing has to be checked physically unfortunately.. if you get it vag com'd this will throw up any sensor faults. A good vr6 specialist will check this for free. Try The Phirm (if you live in the south) or Stealth if you live in the midlands. A rolling road session will be benefial if vag com doesn't show up anything - this will show where it is pinking. To check the cam timing the inlet manifold and cam cover needs to come of - about a 3-4 hour job at the very most. Does your car have any modifications? Could be that it needs
  11. If you're after an increase in power for your vr6 a remap will only give an increase in power on earlier (OBD1) golf vr6's. It won't give any increase in power at all on an obd2 vr6 (golf vr6's manufactuered from mid 1995 onwards). A remap is needed after adding big mods to get the fuelling spot on and prevent pinking and detonation. Do you have an OBD1 or OBD2? If you have a standard OBD2 as said above don't bother with a remap unless you already have BIG mods (such as those mentioned: cams, shrick, or sc) otherwise its pointless. If you have a standard vr6 then I would recommend a cat bac
  12. Definitely has to be my VR. Easily keeps pace with my mate's late model S3 and easily beats my mate who has a tuned clio williams. It's a pure monster at full revs. Although I love it cos you can cruise just as easily and its so exclusive and classy too...hardly ever see golf vr6's on the road nor R32's for that matter.
  13. Hi mate it is possible to supercharge or turbo the vr6 with 264's or even 268's. It requires a spot on remap but yes it is possible. Quite a few people do it regularly in the states... if you post a question on vwvortex.com they will give you a lot of info as many on that forum have done it.
  14. Cheers mate. Would you know if a Milltek system has two mufflers/silencers in the middle section of exhaust (plus the backbox)? I've been told on the vwvortex forum that some good gains can be had by removing the muffler just before the backbox. However not sure if this is the case on the Milltek. Does anyone know? Cheers Matt
  15. Hi Please can anyone help me...I have a 1997 OBD2 golf vr6. My car currently has a high flow cat, Milltek cat back 2.25" exhaust. BMC cold air induction kit, and a more free flowing 6 branch exhaust manifold and a remap. On the last rolling road it had 192bhp and 193 lb/ft torque. I have just recently had some Eurospec 268 cams fitted. The car feels stronger but it's hard to tell how much power (if any) has been gained. I am soon to get a remap tweak to get the fuelling spot on plus rolling road session. Is it likely that the remap itself will get slightly more power from the cams (than say i
  16. Yeah you should improve on it some what! What exhaust do you have Eat This? What mods did you have when you were running 152whp... or rather what mods did you get to make it get to 178? How are your emissions with no silencers... is it just a case of refitting the cat come MOT time or do you have to fit one of the silencers too? Does your car pull well at low revs? I have a Milltek cat back exhaust. Do you or anyone know if it is fairly straight forward to remove one of or all of the silencers? Would my car pass an MOT with no silencers? I have a high flow cat by the way. My car was runni
  17. Anyone know how to get or what races to win in order to get a formular one style car ... there's a race in the Extreme races called the gt championship where the opponents all look like formular one cars. Just wondered if anyone had managed to win one? I know you can't buy one as I've checked.
  18. Hi mate.. That is very good power at the wheels for the mods you have...many vr's only make that at the fly. Who did your rolling road session? I would estimate with transmission losses taken into account it would be around the 220 mark at the fly. vr6pete on here has 221bhp at the fly so will be able to confirm what his power is at the wheels (before transmission losses)..
  19. An inlet manifold (the most common make is called the shrick inlet manifold) are pretty expensive at around the £1000 at the very very lowest in a group buy. You may get one cheaper second hand but they are very rare second hand (I know as I was looking for ages). A shrick inlet mani is very good at increasing torque. Some people on here have gained over 50 lb/ft torque! BHP increase is minimal ...about 5-10bhp. However a shrick and 268 cams really go well together. I have just had some eurospec 268 cams fitted which Stealth told me are copies of Shricks so give the same linear power inc
  20. I agree totally with Stuey. I had my first service at VW when I got my vr and they failed to tighten up all six of my spark plugs leading to running problems. The Phirm soon diagnosed and sorted it out - all for free. They and Stealth charge half the price of a main dealer and (in my opinion) are far more experienced than main dealers. Service interval should be every 10k miles or 12 months (which ever comes sooner) with no gaps ideally! Chains don't normally need to be done unless you have symptoms... ie. a faint background raspy noise (not to be confused with the tappet noise which will
  21. I've got mine lowered at least 40mm on a gmax kit. I recently got goodyear F1's fitted on the front... Makes a big difference going round corners now...well worth getting in my opinion. My car is like a go-cart round corners now. I was thinking about poly's too on the front wishbones. I've heard they're not recommended on the rear (not sure why)...but I've heard conflicting stories. Stealth or The Phirm may know the ins and outs. I personally will get mine polybushed when my current stock bushes wear out (they're about a year old so won't be needing replacing for some time).
  22. Thanks guys. Russ do you know what torque power you have? Do you have a mark 3 vr6? 6.52 is very good. Eat this.. 170-180 torque or bhp at the wheels is very good. Must be well over 200bhp. Where did you have it dynoed? Stealth are very accurate with transmission losses - they seem to use very similar formulae to VW. Have you had your car remapped? I have very similar mods to you... with the exception I have a high flow cat instead of decat. Getting my car remapped in couple of weeks. My car was making 192bhp and 193lb/ft at the fly before the eurospec 268 cams were fitted. Not sure w
