  1. It's done around 97000 miles and it's a '97 R-reg
  2. There is a rattle coming from my engine. It occurs from just above idle speed, and gradually fades until just below 2000rpm from which point it disappears. I've ascertained it's likely to be the chain guides but I replaced the top chain tensioner bolt after reading one of the forum topics in the hope this would improve things. Initially it did but the rattle has come back :-( I inspected the new tensioner bolt after around 2-3000 miles and found that the end has started wearing already in the same way the previous one has - could this be symptomatic of something? I have no idea how long the
  3. Cheers guys. From what you have said it looks like what the have done may have saved me one or two jobs in the future. But I will make sure I always get a call in future if there is extra work! Thanks again!!
  4. Just had my brakes done at Autovolks in Carlisle. I asked them to replace the rear discs/pads and replace the rear right ABS sensor for me. When I booked it in the guy on reception reckoned it'd take them around an hour and would cost £100 - £200 including labour. When I collected it I was charged £370!! Here's what work they did: disc/pads replaced wheel bearings replaced ABS sensor replaced ABS rotor replaced and the job took them 4 hours. Obviously it's hard to tell without having seen the car beforehand, but do you think it sounds like I've been ripped off, or is it plausible given th
  5. Behind the rear light cluster on the left hand side I seem to have a stray wire/connector. Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on it? i.e it's use and what it should be connected to. The connector and wire are both white. Any suggestions or ideas??
  6. CHeers guys!! I had reconnected the battery with the airbag disconnected to check I had the wheel on straight. Thanks again!
  7. I have removed and refitted my steering wheel, as described in the following thread: http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?97956.0 but i have an airbag light. Any ideas?
  8. guys, I have removed and refitted my standard steering wheel, as described by 20JahreGTI. It's all gone back together fine, but the airbag light remains on. Am I right in thinking the slip ring connector is the white/yellow one below the steering wheel? I disconnected that and the yellow connector that goes into the back of the airbag. Any ideas?
  9. Cheers guys, some really helpful stuff there!!! Stuey - I'm in Carlisle. Any of those specialist you know of near me?
  10. When I turn the key in02 is briefly displayed, so looks like a major service! Will I know when the chains are making a noise, or is it something I need to listen for? So the fixed interval is what causes the service messages to display?
  11. Anyone know what the service intervals (and what each service entails) are on a mk3 Golf VR6? I've bought a 1997® one, which has done 91500 miles, therefore wondering if I need to have the timing chain replaced - The VW documentation is a bit sketchy on service intervals!
  12. Just got myself a 1997 Golf VR6, one or two jobs to carry out. First on the list is the central locking. I'm fairly sure it has the original standard alarm, which works fine, except that it doesn't lock the doors. Also, the central locking doesn't work from the passenger side. I have tried a friend's C/L pump and it still didn't work. I cannot test it from the driver's door as someone seems to have jammed a screwdriver or something similar into the lock at some point. As a result the key doesn't turn at all. Any ideas where I start?
