  1. Not sure on the thermostat details but my operating water temp stays dead constant at 90 (right at 12o'clock in the gauge). From reading other posts on here that seems to be the common operating temp for the water/coolant. Therefore I would assume 87 is correct for the factory thermostat to keep the water temp at this temp. However there are 'colder' thermostats made by companies like Neuspeed to keep things cooler in the engine bay which is always a good thing.
  2. Is that after its been imported?
  3. Thermal, its normal for the coolant to be an inch over the max line when its hot. However when it's cooled down it should go back to the max line (assuming thats where it was filled to). Sounds as though it may have been slightly overfilled... keep an eye on it. Be more worried if it starts going down with no obvious leaks - that would be a sign of a dodgy head gasket.
  4. Hi Could this hot weather cause my coolant to splatter through the overflow hole in the cap? There's lots of dried splatter on top. Clearly showing up as white splatter on the cap. My coolant level has not dropped. Recently had a new thermostat so that should not be a problem and my water temp stays normal. What could cause this splattering through the overflow hole? Thanks for any help.
  5. Could it just be noisy tappets? Most VR's suffer from noisy tappets.
  6. Nice car the S14a. I was seriously looking at getting one but went for the vr instead. Quite an exclusive car. I eventually gave up as they were so hard to come by.
  7. Its normal for the power steering to make an audiable "hissing" sound on full lock...nothing to worry about. However if it is noisy throughout turning the steering wheel then it needs looking at.
  8. Hi mate has it been confirmed when the rolling road day will be with Regal Motorsport? Whereabouts are Regal in southampton? Do they have a postcode so I can find them on multimap.com?
  9. Hi Need to renew my insurance. I'm currently with Elephant but have been told Brentacare is even better and actually replace your mods with the same mods in event of claims unlike Elephant. I'm 30 with 8 years no claims and all the mods as in my signature. I've been quoted £480 by Elephant for my renewal. Hopefully this will be beaten by Brentacare. What are Brentacare's contact details? And are they contactable outside work hours - i.e after 5.30pm? Thanks for any help. Matt
  10. Thats what I thought. However I'll get Tim and/or Ian to drive it again and see if they think theres any abnormal power drop. I have to highlight I did have my car overheat recently with a stuck thermostat. This was after my remap. Thankfully it was all fixed by The Phirm who did a great job however when my car was taken for a test drive afterwards it was then when Ian commented it seemed to lose power at 5000 revs and seemd to have less power than the last time he drove it. So something may have changed or been damaged as a result of the car overheating. My car hasn't lost any coolant at
  11. Hi Has anyone else used T-cut before and have it leave smears? It was hot yesterday so I'm thinking this didn't help. I had cleaned my car thoroughly beforehand to remove all dirt. The t-cut was triplewax. I used a small amount on a cloth and rubbed the cloth fairly hard and evenly over a small section of my bonnet to try and remove some light scratches. It didn't remove the scratches (not surprisingly T-cut never seems to in my experience!) but it did leave small faint smears. I tried washing it with more car detergent and chamoised it again. Then applied wax. However the the smears are
  12. Ok here goes: http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n60/matth76/ As you can see the torque is less than before my cams were fitted but lasts for longer higher up the rev range so not sure whey there would be any loss in power... I would have thought there would be more before the cams were fitted.
  13. Thanks guys for your replies. The guy in front was definitely trying. Before I even got to the roundabout he was rocketing away (the distance was about 40 yards between us when he decided to accelerate from the roundabout exit and I put my foot down too and that distance didn't change) It was from a rolling start in 2nd gear (which benefited my VR as I'm sure the B10 would slaughter it from standstill if it has a V8 and can do 0-60 in 5.8). As said before the VR seems very competitive and can surprise quite a few cars from rolling starts. It was the 5 series shape with a subtle spoiler an
  14. Did you have your car remapped after having your cams and ported inlet mani fitted? Worth doing if you haven't to prevent pinking and get the fuelling spot on. Hope you get it sorted mate
  15. Thanks guys. I'll try and scan my graph tomorrow and get it online. Is there a free photo hosting site I can use? Where if any in the rev range would a blow affect? If it does turn out to be a problem with my map I will have to ring Vince to get him to rectify it sometime soon.
  16. Was coming home today and came up to a roundabout and directly in front of me was a BMW (W reg) with alpina B10 on it. I havent heard much about this car. Anyway there was a long open road in front of us. He put his foot down and was really pushing it. I expected it to pull away from me however I actually kept up with it..not easily (I had my foot flat down) but it didnt pull away from me. Anyone else know much about this car or had run ins with any?
  17. Steve could be right about the map. I thought it could possibly the map too - if it wasn't a blow. However when I had my mapping done my peak power was at 5800rpm which I assume is average? So it shouldn't really drop off any lower. Tims going to test drive my car too to see what he thinks
  18. Cheers ... When I described it on the phone to Tim he thought it could well be a blow. And when Ian drove it he thought it had a slight blow. However wont know until its been properly looked at. If it is indeed a blow is it normal to experience slight power loss? Thanks for any help.
  19. I have thought about going to VW direct to get a new ariel for my golf vr. Does anyone know how much this is likely to be or whether I can get a genuine part cheaper else where? I live in Sussex (south east). When I get the new arial does it come complete with the base... or will it only be the ariel bit itself (and not include the base) which i assume I just screw in? However if it includes the base how do I remove the old one and put the new one in? Is there a bolt I have to undo in the roof in the boot anywhere or is it a simple screw in job?
  20. Hi Seems I have a slight blow in my stainless 6 branch (only 7 months after having it fitted). Not a huge blow ...an audiable noise when cold which tends to get quieter when the engine heats up. My power hasn't been quite as strong as it should... is this normal to lose a tiny bit of power? How much of a difference will my car feel after having the blow fixed.. will it pull noticably harder? Getting my exhaust looked at by The Phirm in a week. Cheers for any help.
  21. Ask who has serviced it the last 2 years. If done by a vr specialist then that will be even better than main dealer servicing. Ring up who ever has serviced it the last two years and get their opinion on what may need doing in the near future... very good thing to do. If however the owner says they have serviced it themselves in the last two years instead of a professional I would be very careful! however if thats not the case then it does look like a good buy.
