  1. if it's snapped then it will be invisible ;-) might be loose in the bottom of the fan housing. it's possible that the presure release cap has failed after the earlier overheating.
  2. The AA warned about that a week ago but the local government minsiter said they were scare mongering! Shame raging against the real machine isn't as simple as downloading an mp3 or two.
  3. the blue on is either for the dash display or ECU; certainly not the fan. one fan is driven direct from the motor, the other by way of a belt drive. the belt will have snapped. as for the overheating it might be down to the lack of a fan, especialy if you where stuck in traffic, or as RCF said the thermostat.
  4. nope won't do any damage. just ruin the fuel economy for the duration.
  5. have you checked to see if you've got voltage at the fuel pump. there's a relay and fuse in the circuit either of which might have gone.
  6. you'll need to hold the correct key against the cowling around the ignition to test it.
  7. it does sound like the ecu immobiliser kicking in. normally due to the transducer behind the ignition switch not reading the key, Vince at Stealth, near Cov / L Spa, can recode the ECU so as to remove it completely.
  8. Cars as art: makes me feel more hip over my new feature wall.
  9. OBD2 cars don't use an idle valve, they have a servo driven throttle butterfly. If you turn the ignition on without starting the engine the system will reset/recalibrate itself. Takes about 15mins. Carb cleaner is generally accepted as being too harsh for the MAF. Electronic contact cleaner is safer. If you take the MAF off you might as well take the rest of the intake piping off and see if the TB particualrly oily.

  11. Hi Tim, Welcome to the forum. Yep, a previous owner has had it sprayed. Standard they are all black. Note: early VRs came with a 'deep chin' spoiler, about 4" wide with a lip, and later ones came with the smaller, flat, one off the GTi. They are interchangable. GPC do good prices on genuine trim VW parts, details in address book, or else Eurocar parts and German Swedish and French sell after market spoilers of varying quality. Oh, there is also a vortex body kit which had a different spoiler altogether and is like rocking horse shit to find. Did you get the car from Kent, off a bloke cal
  12. this is a puzzle. even on my early 1992 model the aux pump from GSF was a direct fit.
  13. quite possibly as the spark is controlled by the ECU/ECM. I've read about the same relay causing poor sparking on 16vers.
  14. that's the engine control module relay. VW is the place, roughly a tenner is my guess.

screwfix sell 50m extension leads ;-)
  16. Yeah, even Sir Paul McCartney has said he finds it funny that Rage might be number 1 #1 or #2 the X factor winner - who ever he is ;-) - will get/ has got the boost in career that other acts/bands work hard for many years to achieve.

Phew for the near miss. Nowhere near that much here and I'm not a million miles away. Makes me happy to be unemployed as I don't have to leave the house.
  18. OBDI or II? AFAIK all the relays are on the board by the pedals. Could the buzz be arcing in the ignition switch? Is the clock resetting itself to 00:00?
  19. Most of 'us' are missing that the VR6 was called a GTi in the States rather than the 2L / 1.8T GTi we have in Europe. But yeah, I don't think the 4motion was available in the States. Instead you got the R32 early.
  20. Good info. It's a bit out of date though, as it doesn't include 'new' Cambridge postcodes which came into being over three years ago.
  21. I found a quick blat along a dual carriage way with both windows wide open cycled the air nicely
  22. once it's demisted do you air the car / open the windows? Otherwise the heavily saturated air will just dwell in the car and condense out as soon as the temp falls.
