Actually it does, from a standard perspective that is. Remember, it all depends on the lifestyle of the car and the mileage also. VRs tend to get better with age and so produce more than the standard quoted factory figure. I suspect many of these more powerful ODB1s have reached that stage but the ODB2s will soon catch up and perhaps out pace them? Seriously though, the later spec makes for a little more BHP and torque. It all depends on how well the car is maintained and driven.

System Support Analyst for central government (Project manager without the title, pay ain't bad though ) Actually not a bad job, I enjoy it most of the time and we're well regarded and respected which is rare in the IT world as I'm sure most of my other counterparts on this site will agree with... Also, part time personal trainer and dabble in stocks, shares and property.

I bought a standard, 97 plate with 65k & full VAG service history (which actually doesn't count for much, as you will soon find out) You can never really guage the true past lifestyle of a car but the sensible checks around the body's nooks and crannies, the engine bay, oil filler cap, interior etc. should give you a clue as to whether the car was loved or abused. I change my oil and filter every 5/6k and full service every year also. The car's now on 80k and better than ever. She feels much smoother, feels more responsive, more powerful etc. My feeling is that properly cared for they get

I don't see why not, it was the next step up in defining the Golf's performance status (more of a leap than a step) and the first to go head to head with BMW (E30 325i). The VR6 has been immensly popular and less were manufactured than the GTi (it made it's debut shortly after the 1st Gulf war and in times of high oil/fuel prices and so production was limited) Re. the colour, the mulberry is only as sought after as the market makes it and as for being the nicest, it's down to personal taste and perception. Colour fashion goes around in cycles. Mulberry is rare but then so is Silver but Dragon

I don't think they can be easily repaired. Had the same problem with an old Ford Escort, opened the unit and it all fell apart. You should be able to rob one of any Mk3 from a Breakers.

My mind doesn't change, something can grow on me but not often. My first impressions of the looks of a car are usually the ones that stay with me unless I can see potential. The new R32 to me will always remain an ugly beast. I'm not fan of the MK3s looks either and never have been but it's better looking than the Mk4 (imo) and isn't a crowd follower

Come on, you all know if you had 3 doors you'd think it looked sweeter than 5

What are the results in operation Nerih? The only thing that would worry me is water hitting that amp &| How come you haven't mounted it on the rear of the seat?

What a mess. I much prefer the original.

I've 'built' so many project cars over the years and realised a little too late that once the money's spent, it's lost !sad But, each to their own, we all like to express ourselves in different ways and one of the most prominent is through our cars. I have decided to keep mine subtle, I find it attracts just as much attention as other tricked motors with just a decent set of rims, coilies and a zorst. I may consider new headlamps and fogs/indicators but nothing more. It's sometimes like wiping a little dust from a table, once you start you have to finish the rest or it looks wrong. I was abs

Not bad. I'm 34, Full (Max) NCB, 6 points (speeding), although my insurance tell me that points for speeding do not affect my premium (I'm with Liverpool Frizzell, who by the way have been excellent in 3 claims we have made in the past year) I'm in the Greater London area and paid

I beleive both HIC and Greenlight offer this type of cover... HIC: 08451 290290 Greenlight: 08707 535455

Small wooden rounders bat, slightly muddied with catch glove and old trainers slightly muddied to match

Here here! I would like to think that this is limited to the newer higher end sports cars that are in demand/in fashion right now but you never can tell. Whatever, it's wrong.

Infinity's are another option... Thanks Guys, much appreciated

I was told by a few 'experts' that the Alpine's were made for the Jap market and not in tune with our tastes?!?! Of course then I saw the cost of a set of JL Audios and Focals they were trying to sell me... I may consider that although I like the sound of all four at the same level, the front alone sound lost somehow.

blinking flip! that's more powerful than Nerihs with an SC!

lol Anorak, agreed although 0 - 60 in 6.5? I wish! Mine's a 97 and has always felt faster/more responsive than my friends both of whom have 93 models. I guess that's where my comparison to the 328 came from. Still, the 328 is no slouch and build quality is superb, nothing wrong there. Just found the VR6 more chuckable, perhaps just down to perception as it's more compact. It was much cheaper at the time also (like for like) Would interesting to see a new comparison tho

Dubloke, thanks, tried that at the beginning but honestly, the speakers are now the weak link. I'm looking for an upgrade and amp to run them. Cheers.

I just realised, the original VR6 road test was performed in 1991. The post 96 cars had the larger throttle bodies and same ecu/mapping as the highline. From past chats with Vince at Stealth I understand that the pre 96 motor puts out 174bhp (min) and the post 96 motors 190+ I wonder what a new test would throw up in terms of performance.

From past conversations with Vince at Stealth, I understand that post 96 VRs had the later larger throttle body and the same ecu/mapping as the highline. VW never released the new figures although it was thought that pre 96 cars put out 174 bhp and the later ones somewhere in the region of 190.

Chaps, I have recently acquired an Alpine CDA 9853r head unit (one below the pretty bio-lite display one). Sounds great but naff navigation via the 'Glide Bar' (basic sound functions are buried behind menus) still a great player though. Anyway, before it was stolen, I had a Pioneer headunit which frankly sounded great and was connected to some uprated Pinoeer speakers that the previous owner had installed. With the Alpine they now sound little shrill and not so warm. I'm looking for a recommendation on rears and front/mids and perhaps a nice 4 channel amp to beef things up but nothing too expe

Anorak, wasn't shooting you down buddy I've never actually looked at the figures and have only gone by my experience of driving both. Perhaps the 328 I drove was a bad example, didn't look it though and seemingly well maintained. At the time I was looking for a car I had the VR6, GTi (1.8T), BMW 328i on my short list. Plumped for the VR6 in the end. IMHO found it to be the best value for money and performance.

Thanks Guys As with everything I suppose. the trouble is the Hella's (although nice) are a little busy. I much prefer the simple plain styling of the FKs i.e. no indicator and spacing between the lenses. So which ones? Angels or Powerlooks?

A 328 with 0 - 60 in 6.4?! I don't think so mate.
